In Chicago, the Deaf Will Sing Don Giovanni
Since we opened ASL-Opera.com in September 2023, one question has arrived more often than any other: how rare is it, exactly, for an opera company to present a foreign-language title in American Sign Language? The question deserves a documented answer, and this fall Chicago supplies the occasion. Lyric Opera of Chicago opens its 2026-27 season with Mozart's Don Giovanni, October 10 through November 1, 2026, in the Robert Falls production, Enrique Mazzola conducting, Christian Van Horn in the title role, the capstone of the company's Mozart and Da Ponte trilogy. Inside that run sits something the season coverage barely mentions: a designated ASL performance on Sunday, October 18, at 2 p.m., which the company's own production page marks on its ticketing calendar and describes plainly, all dialogue and lyrics translated into American Sign Language by "two certified interpreters located near the stage," with select seats reserved for the sightlines a signed performance demands. Lyric has loaded the same matinee with its other access services, audio description and the haptic SoundShirt, a garment that lets the wearer feel the orchestra on the skin in real time. An Italian opera from 1787, interpreted live in ASL, on a major American mainstage, sold inside the regular season. In a healthy art form that sentence would read as routine. In the American record it reads as an event, and the distance between routine and event is the subject of this article. The book series TMNLP at @langscipress has recently received an unusal amount of new proposals. This is certainly indicative of an increased research activity in the field of #Translation and #Interpreting Studies with regard to new technologies as well as of a continued move to #openaccess publishing. Simultaneous interpreters have a secret. Our job isn't as simple as you might think.

The weirdest thing about church interpreting is that, when it works, it really works. It feels like two people working perfectly together. #interpreting #church

There's a fashion for people using automated metrics to evaluate the quality of #interpreting. In this research article, Joss Moorkens and I explain why that doesn't work and what to do instead.

Translators and interpreters are being told to adapt to new tech or leave their profession. Independent research is showing that the tech is flawed and dangerous. Probably exploitative too.
It's time for a healthy, open conversation that involves mutual respect.

Interpreting has three foundational principles:
- impartiality,
- neutrality, and
- accuracy. The first two have already been questioned by research. Could the third be next?

salut :ananias:
¿ porque a mi primo y mi prima solo los oigo hablar en castellano cuando se pelean o me gastan bromas ?
dlaczego mi mówią moje kolegi po polsku tylko "kapusta, głowa pusta" ?
mit solchen fragen rund um sprachen möchte ich mich hier mit eurer hilfe höchstwissenschaftlich gegeneinandersetzen
and by the way, I am a student in conference #interpreting , living in #Brussels and happy to chat about books, night trains and wikipedia
corrigez mes erreurs :D

#tech #AI
It used to be common for people to predict that AI would take most #interpreting work, with humans doing special cases. As evidence keeps emerging of the weaknesses, inaccuracies and downright craziness of AI interpreting systems, it's likely that the opposite is true.
Good human professional interpreters are flexible and can handle anything from sales conferences to summits. Computers are only useful when the stakes are low. -
It turns out that speech translation systems have been massively and systematically exaggerating the capabilities of their systems by using tests that have been known to be flawed for at least a decade.
Now that people are taking their claims seriously, the truth is coming out.

Hey, fellow translators and interpreters in the US (and other sympathetic parties), can we maybe start a chat somewhere to talk about ways to push back against the idea of making English the official language? We‘re uniquely positioned to address this kind of thing, and I have a really bad feeling that it‘s only going to erode support for language services in courtrooms, hospitals, and elsewhere to the point that lots of people who need us are going to be very badly fucked over.
Hit me up, eh?

I've been taking a medical interpreting course through CUNY so I can diversify my business beyond document and book translations.
Decided to go old school and make hundreds of physical flashcards and take handwritten notes. Wow, my hand is not used to doing this much handwriting anymore! It's like a mini-workout. 😀

Putting background music on videos with spoken text should be illegal! As a conference interpreter, I propose particularly harsh sentences for anyone producing such a video and expecting it to be simultaneously interpreted live. #interpreting #translation

I must say, as a #translator, I find one of the most delightful things about #Shogun is watching Mariko #interpreting. There is so much subtle humour here, but I’m also all like “Yes! She’s not translating word-for-word, and she’s adapting the message for her audience. THIS is what human #translation looks like.”
Also, #AnnaSawai is an incredible actor.

As always, whatever the interpreters are being paid needs to be doubled, tripled.

Language policy in the Belgian Senate.
In this parliamentary committee room (for institutional reforms) there’s live interpreting for the two main national languages: Dutch and French.
But on the microphones the instructions are written down in neither language, but in English (which has no legal status as a language in Belgium).
(I love it.)

'#Everything Is #ontheTable' After #US #SupremeCourt #Rulings: #Law #professor #MelissaMurray.
#Corrupt #Conservative #Justices on #Court has "made it very clear they they're not going to let themselves be #bound by #staredecisis," a #legal #term referring to adhering to #precedent, in "circumstances when it comes to #interpreting the #Constitution," meaning that all #precedents that conservatives don't like could be "on the #choppingblock."
