  1. I'm enjoying this interview with etymologist Suzie Dent, on Count Binface's podcast;

    So far, I've learned the history of words like 'mugwump' and 'hangdog'. Also that Binface doesn't have much time for Jimmy Carr, Boris Johnson, or Mrs Brown's Boys ; )

  2. For those of you who like this sort of thing, here's a neat little BBC news story on the origins of the now ubiquitous phrase; 'not fit for purpose'.

    It tracks its widening use & its (continuing) relevance to the Home Office. If politics is in part carried out in language then a bit of lexicographical history is always interesting. Enjoy

  6. A few entries from the language section of The Standard Dictionary of Facts, published 1920 and recently purchased by me. Looking forward to reading through all the prescriptivist entries to see what sort of language use people were fretting about over a century ago.

    (I particularly love the entry for “dearest”, which made me laugh out loud.)

  7. Hype for the Future 49D: The Galician Language

    In Galicia, the regional language is effectively as if a mix of Spanish and Portuguese. However, the overall syntax of the nation is significantly more akin to Portuguese than Spanish, though the orthography of the Galician language has often been criticized within Galicia for being excessively Castilianized. 8. @mrundkvist I'm starting with dictionary entries like this one to get a basic understanding. From that material I will build the new dictionary entry.
