We got approved to be a Bank, but don;t call us a Bank!
Crypto exchange Coinbase has received conditional approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to charter Coinbase National Trust Company - aka become a bank.
That said, CoinBases states "Coinbase is not becoming a commercial bank. We will not be taking retail deposits. We will not be engaging in fractional reserve banking."

The thread about the Forth Dam megaproject; why bridge the Firth when you can block it?
Here’s one for you that I bet you’ve probably never heard of: did you know that in 1928 there was a proposal to cross the Firth of Forth by building a dam across it? This will be a short thread, by nature of the dearth of information available, but hopefully a useful record of this bold initiative.
Forth Bridge from above [South] Queensferry. James Valentine postcard, 1890. © Edinburgh City LibrariesThe scheme was the brainchild of Matthew Steele, a Bo’ness-born architect whose work focused on retail and housing, first in an Arts & Crafts and later in the Moderne style, and includes the Hippodrome cinema. In this endeavour he was joined by fellow Bo’nessite John Jeffrey; hotelier and burgh councillor.
Bo’ness Hioppodrome cinema, by Matthew Steele (top left). Picture via Visit Scotland website. This was a time before the Kincardine swing bridge was built (not completed until 1936) and there was much public debate about the best manner and location for a road vehicle crossing of the Forth downstream of Stirling. The Firth had of course been crossed way back in the 1890s by the rail bridge.
The Kincardine Bridge, © Copyright James Allan, CC-by-SA 2.0 via GeographJeffrey and Steele’s proposal was to throw a 7,300 foot long barrage (1.3 miles, 2.2km) across the Firth and lay a roadway along the top of it for vehicular traffic. It would run from just west of Port Edgar on the south shore to a point a quarter of a mile to the west of North Queensferry. You’ll be as totally thrilled as I was to find it to know that there’s a sketch plan!
“The Proposed Forth Dam”, Edinburgh Evening News – Monday 15 December 1930You’ll notice that the project wasn’t just a dam: in order to maintain navigation along the Forth it was planned to cut a 2,500ft (762m) long channel between Inverkeithing harbour and St. Margaret’s Bay, complete with locks on the scale of the Panama Canal. This latter point was critical as Rosyth was the principal dockyard in Scotland of the Royal Navy’s Home Fleet and was on the upstream side of the dam. The channel would have to be allow passage by the fleet’s largest battleships such as HMS Hood, the 47,000 ton, 860ft long pride of the nation.
HMS Hood in the Panama Canal locks, 1924It was Steele’s contention that by building the foundations of the dam to the west of the Beamer Rock (where the modern Queensferry Crossing finds its footings) it would be easier and cheaper than forming the base for bridge piers. The promoters put forward a number of claimed benefits for their dam:
- Firstly, it would bring thousands of construction jobs to the out-of-work miners of Bo’ness, Stirlingshire, West Lothian and Fife, many more so than would be required to build a bridge.
- Secondly, a steel bridge would be built with steel that inevitably came from Lanarkshire and would not directly benefit the Forth coast, and would require specialised steel fabricators rather than the sort of work that would suit the skills of miners.
- Thirdly, the dam would help the region find a convenient way to dispose of its surplus of ugly and often dangerous coal and shale bings, which would provide the perfect infill material.
- Fourth, and dubiously, they proposed that a new level of the Forth would form a fresh water lake several feet about the natural high tide level thus ridding the estuary of its “hideous black mud-flats“. This, of course, would actually have been an ecological disaster as those mudflats are a rich and critical biome.
- The elevated water level of the new Loch Forth would benefit shipbuilding in Bo’ness and Grangemouth it was claimed, as with deeper water they could launch larger ships, and the docks of these towns could support larger vessels without tidal restrictions.
- The giant new lake, cut off from the roughness and vagaries of the sea, would be perfect for the landing of seaplanes, and military and civilian bases were proposed. (Alan Cobham had sent Leith aviation crazy in June 1928 by arriving at its docks in his flying boat.)
- To top off the lengthy list of benefits of the Forth Dam, “the water… could be used to create hydro-electric power for all the Forth Valley” and would be a “big inducement in bringing new factories to West Lothian, Stirlingshire and parts of Fife“.
The roadway along the dam would drastically shorten the distance for vehicular traffic across the Firth and “fast water buses” were also proposed to work passenger transport: Jeffrey foresaw “his man-made lake becoming a highly popular water playground for the whole of Central Scotland“. He imagined it would be akin to the Swiss lakes – or more realistically the Clyde or Loch Lomond – and be served by pleasure steamers visiting picturesque new coastal villages.
Lake Lucerne paddle steamer “Stadt Luzern”, CC-by-SA 3.0 SputniktiltThe intrepid pair set about touting their scheme and trying to gain supporters, which started with a letter to The Scotsman on July 7th 1928 and proceeded onto the pages of the West Lothian Courier and Linlithgowshire Gazette. Locally, they found both vocal support and also incredulity. Jeffrey upped the ante – “When is this squandering of public money going to cease?” he demanded, in the Gazette in 1930, referring to the “millions” being spent on the Dole rather than progressing his scheme. But a lukewarm response was received when details of the scheme were sent to the Prince of Wales (heir to the throne and later Edward VIII), whose private secretary politely declined his patronage saying the Prince couldn’t possibly look into every crackpot scheme that crossed his desk. Instead, the secretary forwarded the scheme on to the Secretary of State for Scotland, Godfrey Collins, from whose intray it never appears to have resurfaced. Within a year or so, it was superseded by serious bridge schemes in the Queensferry area.
Proposed Forth suspension bridge, August 1935, ScotsmanThe war of course then intervened and the Forth wouldn’t get its downstream road bridge until 1964, but it did gets its car ferries between South and North Queensferry in 1934. You can read more about their amusing habits of running aground in this previous thread. Sixty years later, a smaller barrage scheme, but one that would have been environmentally destructive too, was put forward to infill Wardie Bay between Leith and Granton harbours. You can read more about that over on its own thread.

One interesting 'winner' from working from home has been the ME group's subdivision WashME that install washing machines in third party locations (such as retailers or petrol stations); a sort of revival of the old laundrette.
Seemingly, those working from home no longer want clothes drying in the work environment, and indeed may not have the space for a washing machine & so are increasingly using such quasi-laundrettes.... perhaps a new location for office romances?

Right near the shops in my retail district, I have a small crafting center.
Do you need things crafted? Pass along the supplies to Matt, and he will make it happen.
A while back, I had friends / my kids visit as I had some DIYs they did not. That was when I built this area. I found I could be passed the items across the counter, and then I could pass back the crafted items to them.
It was such a fun moment!

LLANELLI: Aldi to build £7m supermarket on site of Pinopolis — the entertainment centre that only opened three years ago
Aldi is planning a brand new £7 million store in Llanelli — and this time, it’s heading to Sandy Road, on the site of the Pinopolis family entertainment centre opposite Ysgol y Strade and Coleg Sir Gâr’s Graig Campus.
The site is currently home to Pinopolis, which only opened in April 2023, offering bowling, darts, soft play and a diner under one roof. It won’t be fighting the development.
David Edwards of Pinopolis confirmed the centre was now looking for a new home, saying the Sandy Road site was “no longer economically or operationally viable.”
He added: “Aldi provides a deliverable alternative to the site, which will bring benefits to the local community. We encourage our customers to support the application and have their say on the consultation.”
Pinopolis on Sandy Road, Llanelli
(Image: Google Maps)Aldi has been on an aggressive UK expansion drive in recent years, actively targeting new sites in towns where it believes there is unmet demand for discount grocery shopping. The Sandy Road proposal represents what the company describes as a “renewal of its commitment” to Llanelli.
This would actually be the third Aldi to serve Llanelli. The original store was in the town centre, next to the historic Buckleys Brewery building. It closed last year, having been deemed unsuitable due to operational constraints — and plans were subsequently approved to convert it into a Pure Gym.
The closure disappointed many shoppers who valued the convenience of a town centre location. The second store — which opened at Trostre in December 2021 — remains open. The proposed Sandy Road store would be in addition to Trostre, not a replacement for it.
Aldi real estate director Rob Jones said: “We are thrilled to bring forward plans for a new Aldi store in Llanelli. We encourage residents to participate in our consultation to learn more about the scheme and share their views.”
According to Aldi’s own figures, the proposed store would create up to 40 new jobs, with store assistants paid a minimum of £13.50 an hour. Additional employment would be generated during the construction phase and through the supply chain, the company says.
The plans include 133 car parking spaces — six accessible and nine parent and child spaces.
There is one obvious question the planning application will need to answer: traffic. Sandy Road has been one of Llanelli’s most stubborn congestion hotspots for years.
The problems intensified following the installation of traffic lights to serve the housing estate built on the site of the former Stradey Park rugby ground — the historic home of the Scarlets and Llanelli RFC before the move to Parc y Scarlets.
Carmarthenshire Council has made multiple attempts to ease the congestion, including road improvement works and junction changes.
Councillors said the most recent improvements were already making a difference — but the arrival of a large supermarket on the same stretch will inevitably revive those concerns.
Aldi says families in towns without access to a discount supermarket pay up to £836 more per year on average for their groceries — rising to £2,437 in areas dominated by higher-priced supermarkets. The company says the new store would help tackle that “postcode penalty” for residents in west Llanelli, Pwll, Burry Port and surrounding communities.
A statutory pre-application consultation is running until 11 June.

CW: #MutualAid Fundraiser Update #2 and general old man yelling at clouds
I don't even know what to write at this point.
Every month I tell myself, "Okay, this is the month we get back on track. I'm going to go get a second job. We're going to do this on our own for once, goddammit."
Yet my job takes just enough of a physical and emotional toll that I can't seem to function. I can't get focused. I can't get the apartment cleaned up or get everything organized, I can't seem to summon the willpower to go through the mind-numbingly asinine job application process to some other retail job that's probably even more demeaning than the one I currently hold.
So every month we only make rent thanks to charity. The only reason we're not homeless is because we're receiving mutual aid. I'm not exaggerating. We would absolutely be on the streets without everyone's help on the Fedi.
This has been going on for two years now.
It seems reasonable to ask, "Well, why don't you apply for government assistance? Why don't you reach out to local charities? Why don't you handle your money better and quit relying on strangers?"
Let me offer brief summary of the circumstances of someone I know to help answer those questions:
A co-worker of mine - a single mother with multiple health problems, has needed to resort to payday loans for enough money to eat.
She makes *just* enough money to not qualify for much public assistance, and struggles with tech literacy so it's a nightmare for her trying to navigate all the hoops one must jump through.
She reached out to the local clergy of the predominant religious faith in the area. It's one of the most wealthy religious institutions in the world, commanding hundreds of *billions* in assets (thanks to a whistleblower for it to even be publicly known), and she is a member of this church.
They made her give them copies of her paystubs and her bank account statements, detailed financial information of her (just barely turned) adult son who barely makes anything working at a movie theater and that of her brother (also struggling financially, and will only be their roommate until the end of their lease sometime early summer), and still turned her down. They offered her a couple of vouchers for their church-owned food pantry, most of which she's unable to use due to food allergies.
She had to beg them, sobbing, until they finally relented and agreed to cover one month of rent for her and her son (I guess her brother will magically find his portion?) and insisted that this was the last help she would receive from them.
It's a perfect (yes, albeit anecdotal) example of why #MutualAid is crucial: people are falling through the cracks because the institutions we're supposed to be able to rely upon are failing to protect us. Even one of the most wealthy non-profit entities on the planet refuse to help even their own members without forcing them to undergo an embarrassing and demeaning process to prove their worthiness to receive help.
If anyone deserves help, it's her. She's a sweet, good-natured soul just trying to survive. Yet because she isn't computer-savvy and able to constantly begpost like I have the privilege of doing, she is stressed out of her mind and starting to sell all her possessions before she has to move to a different apartment next month and couldn't afford to set any money aside for deposit and related costs.
I can't even remember where I was going with this now after angrily typing all of that. I guess maybe that it isn't always as fucking simple and easy as some people think it is, to be a grifting beggar.
I can promise you one thing, however: I'd be willing to bet that most of us posting #MutualAidRequest after request, would really rather not be doing so.
I would much, much, much rather be giving back to the community.
But that's difficult when your annual salary raises are less than inflation. Or, as I've begun referring to them, "annual pay cuts".
But folks like my co-worker and myself didn't "apply ourselves" to get college degrees, so I guess we're getting what we deserve.
Except it shouldn't be what we deserve.
Survival shouldn't be a privilege to be "earned".

In so many traditional industries (real estate, banking, computers, retail sales, airlines, travel, etc.), we see that the Internet strips away discretion, power and secrecy. It is very hard to withstand the forced transparency induced by this new technology.
