One door closes and another opens in Smoky Hollow.

Just days after Tucker Street Diner closed, the owners of Iris Coffee Lab announced plans to open Madeleine Raleigh, a new coffee shop and bread bakery, in the former diner space.

Madeleine is expected to offer specialty coffee, cold-fermented breads and inventive baked goods. The location is only a short walk from Iris Coffee Lab on Tucker Street, giving the owners a larger footprint in the growing Smoky Hollow and Glenwood South area.

While construction is underway, the team plans to introduce the concept through a small pop-up outside the future location. Madeleine could open before the end of 2026. ABC11⁠

A major institution in Durham’s Black Wall Street history is entering a new chapter.

M&F Bank, founded in Durham in 1907 and recognized as North Carolina’s oldest Black-owned bank, is merging with South Carolina-based Optus Bank.

The combined financial institution is expected to become the nation’s largest Black-owned bank, with more than $1.3 billion in assets. The merger could expand access to capital for individuals, entrepreneurs and underserved communities throughout the Southeast.

Wake County Launches $22 Million Homelessness Initiative

Wake County is investing approximately $22 million in a new initiative designed to reduce homelessness and move people into stable housing.

The Wake at Home initiative intends to help approximately 1,400 people during the next 18 months. Its goals include connecting 400 people currently living outside with permanent housing and support services by December 2027.

Peace Street Bridge Claims Three More Trucks

Despite warning signs and years of highly publicized crashes, the Peace Street Bridge continues to surprise drivers of oversized vehicles.

The repeated collisions have made the bridge one of downtown Raleigh’s most infamous transportation landmarks.

Raleigh Prepares for North Carolina’s First Public Automated Garage

The underground parking garage being constructed as part of City Gateway will use robotic lifts and shuttles to park and retrieve vehicles.

Drivers will leave their vehicles inside a designated transfer area. The automated system will then move each vehicle into an available underground space without requiring the driver to navigate the garage.

When it opens this winter, the facility is expected to become North Carolina’s first public automated parking system.

Fayetteville Street Marks 20 Years Since Reopening

July 2026 marks 20 years since Fayetteville Street reopened to vehicle traffic.

Raleigh City Council Recap – What Happened at the July 7, 2026 Meeting

The Raleigh City Council held its afternoon and evening sessions on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, addressing a wide range of topics affecting residents—from water conservation and public safety to development, annexations, and future rezonings.

Among the biggest issues discussed were the City’s response to the July 4 gatherings in Glenwood South and Brier Creek, proposed youth curfew measures, changes to Raleigh’s water restriction policies, and numerous land use decisions.

Here’s a breakdown of the meeting’s biggest developments.

City Council Approves Changes to Water Restriction Rules

One of the most significant actions taken was the approval of amendments to Raleigh’s Water Conservation Plan.

The changes give the City Manager greater flexibility to move Raleigh into stricter stages of water restrictions before reservoir levels reach existing percentage thresholds if current conservation measures are not successfully reducing water demand.

Additional changes include:

• Aligning civil penalties with the Raleigh City Code.
• Limiting athletic field irrigation to one day per week during Stage 2 Water Restrictions.
• Giving the City additional flexibility to respond during drought conditions.

The changes are designed to help Raleigh conserve water more effectively during periods of high demand.

Teen Takeovers Lead to Curfew Discussion

Much of the meeting focused on the large youth gatherings that occurred during the July 4 holiday in Glenwood South and Brier Creek.

Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce, Parks Director Stephen Bentley, and Community Engagement Manager Tiesha Moseley presented an overview of what occurred and discussed strategies to improve safety while balancing youth engagement.

Among the options being considered:

• A city-wide curfew for anyone 17 years old and younger
• Restrictions on backpacks during large gatherings
• Additional youth engagement programs
• Increased enforcement during major events

Mayor Janet Cowell noted that adopting a permanent curfew ordinance requires additional legal steps. However, she explained that she has emergency authority to implement temporary restrictions if public safety requires immediate action.

City Council unanimously directed the City Attorney to:

• Draft a proposed curfew ordinance for the August 18 City Council meeting
• Prepare emergency declaration procedures if immediate action becomes necessary
• Return with additional recommendations for addressing large youth gatherings

The discussion is expected to continue next month.

Six Annexations Approved

Council unanimously approved six annexation requests, including properties on:

• Hillsborough Street
• Rock Quarry Road
• Garner Road
• National Avenue
• Jones Ridge Trail area

These annexations will allow future development to proceed under City of Raleigh jurisdiction.

The Left Hook Announces Grand Opening Celebration

Downtown Raleigh favorite The Left Hook is celebrating the grand opening of its new Hargett Street café with a community festival on Saturday, August 1.

Raleigh Pride Festival returns to downtown Raleigh on June 26-27, 2026, bringing two days of entertainment, community engagement, local vendors, food, and LGBTQIA+ pride to Fayetteville Street. What to Expect at Out! Raleigh Pride 2026

Carolina Hurricanes Championship Parade Set for Downtown Raleigh

TST 2026 Friday Recap – Men’s Knockout Round of 32, Women’s Group Play, and Mixed Division Thrillers Deliver Nonstop Action in Cary

The Soccer Tournament (TST) continued to showcase world-class competition on May 29 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, as the Men’s Round of 32, Women’s Group Stage, and Mixed Division matches produced dramatic finishes, comeback victories, and standout individual performances.

Detroit City FC Dominates Mixed Division

Detroit City FC put the Mixed Division on notice with a commanding 6-0 victory over Solo FC. Six different players found the scoresheet, led by Brielle Heuglin, Jay Chapman, Emma Nicholson, Lilley Bosley, Lopez Jordy, and Celia Gaynor.

Later in the day, Detroit City FC remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Sneaky FC behind goals from Lopez Jordy and Antoine Hoppenot.

Boca Dallas also impressed, earning victories over Pumas De Alabama and Prestige Worldwide. Vivian Akyirem scored both target score goals in Boca Dallas’ morning comeback victory, while João Miranda delivered the game winner against Prestige Worldwide later in the day.
