Encountered the weirdest damned Windows 11 bug this week and just happened to stumble upon a blog post in which someone posted the solution, which I will now amplify here:
If all your pinned taskbar icons are broken/blank/generic icons instead of the proper app icons except when the application is running, check your desktop (and possibly inside folders on your desktop) for any executable files. (Shortcuts are fine, just no executable files themselves.)
Delete them or move them somewhere else, and then restart Windows Explorer from the Task Manager. Like magic, mine icons came right back.
No idea how this stupid bug could possibly exist, but there it is. For some reason I had a Firefox executable on my desktop, and it was the culprit for why I had no icons on my taskbar.

1. Connect my phone to cellular and enable its hotspot (Done)
2. Connect my (Linux 😎) laptop to the hotspot
3. Connect my laptop to the **WAN** port of our routerAnd that's it. And... it works! Now all the home devices which connect to our usual WiFi APs get Internet!

After reading more about
badblocksand S.M.A.R.T., I'm actually a bit confused about how it's possible that a drive that severely damaged (80% of blocks are bad!) is passing its SMART test.
I'm running a long test now to see if it's just the normal test that missed it, but I'm curious if anyone has insight. It's not a high priority or anything (everything is backed up and it's not my main computer). I'm just curious how errors that egregious weren't detected. #Hardware #ITHelp #ComputerSupport #LinuxAdvice

Having a very strange problem with the #NSF #report site. I need to resubmit a requested update from the PO. When I click on either "Submit Report" in "Available Actions" or "re-submit report" in the alert header I get the normal NSF-PAR warning, but when I click "Submit Now", nothing changes. This is consistent across browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Vivialdi) and has persistent for three days from both home and work networks and with or without VPNs. Help? Please? #IT #IThelp #help

Der Fehler ist: Senden der Nachricht fehlgeschlagen. addr.name is undefined.Dazu habe ich online nix gefunden, hat wer eine Idee? Hat M$ da wieder was anti-consumer gemacht?
Bonus: Thundebird crasht komplett wenn ich eines der MS Konten einrichten will.

I created an educational resource for mixed media artists in the form of a Google spreadsheet. It uses the comments functionality to add annotations to many of the cells. (This is an important feature.)
BUT if I share the document publicly with comments visible, anyone can add their own comments or "approve" mine. This is a disaster waiting to happen if any spammers or mischievous kids were to stumble upon this resource.

I currently have all of my peripherals going through a thunderbolt 4 docking station. I can plug in my laptop or switch which laptop is plugged in and still use the same keyboard, network, and monitors. Does anybody know of a KVM switch that I could use in a situation like this? I want to keep a desktop plugged in with its own networking but be able to switch which device has the monitors, keyboard, and mouse at will.

Help with tech issue please!
My son’s brand-new school Windows laptop’s battery is not lasting as long as it needs to: he uses it for one 40-minute WebEx system, which uses up 50% of the battery, and then one independent study session and one in-class session, both of which are just web-based research and/or ebook reading, and typing in Word.
We’ve turned on every battery-saving option we can find, including turning off auto load/background refreshes, turning down the screen brightness and turning the video streaming off HD. This last made the WebEx session use 40% rather than 50%, but overall he’s just left on 5% now instead of completely dead. If he has a day needing more video, or if more classes require a laptop, it’s not adequate.
It was advertised as lasting 14 hours. I know that doesn’t translate to real-world use, but 2.5 hours seems extremely poor. Is the battery a dud, is this just what WebEx/modern apps do, or is there some other setting we can play with?

#TechQuery #IThelp #WesternDigital 4TB #harddrive. (Might be My Passport, not certain). Formatted to NFTS and dumped a huge number of video files in various formats on it. Plugged it in to #Samsung Bluray player that can normally read most files, and still does for other hard drives. Doesn't recognise the drive at all. Neither does #PS4. Tried it as exFAT. Also doesn't work. Don't think FAT32 would work. Wondered if it wasn't drawing enough power maybe, but light is on. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I was on tumblr and I moused over and the screen changes to look like this, and I remember that this used to be a trick we played on each other, a bit of code, I can't remember how we did it, but it was a joke.
And I am wondering, is there a virus on my computer, or is it on tumblr, or is it in my browser? Any ideas?

CW: Birdplace Download Viewing Problems
My Birdplace download from an old suspended account is a JSON that I can't view in a browser & is stuffed with html so unreadable as txt. How do I see it in a more readable format? Im no programmer & know nothing about Python sadly. I thought you were supposed to have a browser file but there's nothing. Suggested I import it in to Excel too but not seeing how that works either. One of my work tasks is to make some screen recordings of how to do things in a new system to onboard our helpdesk to support it. I'm on a work managed windows box. The software I've been told to use is the X-box Game Bar, which is not recording any sound.
Any ideas? My microphone is on, set as the input sound device & detected by the software when I test it. The mike is on for recordings but no sound is captured. Anyone got any idea how to troubleshoot this?
