Why does it always take me until the last step of a manuscript submission process to remember that if I upload my files as pdfs, I don't need to wait for file conversions?🤦

Your periodic reminder that changing the background color on a document is a great way to make sure you are editing the active document (yes I know you can lock it, but color is sooo easy).

Note in point.
What does it mean when only your rank 1 model suggests an interaction between two proteins with alphafold multimer? Is this garbage?

Clearly, there is still much to learn about this corner of the dark genome defined by HEATR5 proteins and their co-factors.

We're entering peak faculty interview season in my field.
One of the most common ways a candidate is derailed during the interview is not deflecting aggressive questioning during the seminar or chalk talk.
Although this may be a sign to run, the questioner might not even be a part of the interviewing department.
To prepare, I suggest this amazing guide on how to deal with derailing questions during a talk from

Now that I'm wearing short sleeves, my watch tells me that my bicycle commute is too loud due to wind noise. I do notice that the wind noise is pretty loud. Does anyone know whether bicycling is a risk for hearing loss? Should I think about wearing earmuffs? I think they will reduce the wind noise without blocking real noise.

The recipe in question is:
4C flour
1tsp salt
2tsp sugar
1tsp baking powder
err 3/4 tsp yeast
2tbsp oil
4tbsp yogurt
1 cup milkI'm a bit worried that the milk and yogurt is going to cause the breadcrumbs to burn or spoil.

PSA: The restriction enzyme DpnI is a great way to remove the plasmid template after a PCR reaction.
It has a 4-base recognition sequence and only cuts methylated or hemimethylated DNA. Therefore, it will chop up almost any plasmid template but not digest the PCR product. It also works in most polymerase buffers.

Sustainability tip for yeast labs:
when replica plating you can combine two different dissection plates into one replica plate. This will reduce the number of plates you use by almost ½.
Here’s how it works. As you know, a normal dissection takes up an entire plate, and then to genotype you need to replica plate to many (5) different plates—each reporting on a different marker.
To me, that’s a lot of plates.

Ann Arbor folks, there is a community comment opportunity for proposed changes to US 23 between Ellsworth and Plymouth road. This will impact pedestrian and bike egress across US23, the B to B trail, and, of course, car traffic.
You can attend the in-person event today from 12--2 and 2-4 at 105 Morris Lawrence Building on the Washtenaw Community College Campus or comment online here

We're getting a second e-bike in the household today! I couldn't convince my partner to take my slightly too-small-for-me e-bike (that'd fit them well) and let me buy a new one, but I'm excited that we're going to go more days entirely car-free.
I may still sell my e-bike and get one that fits me better. I should have known that my legs are too long to go with the suggested size/height ratio.

Another ~30F temperature whiplash day. 26F on the ride in 55 on the ride home.
Glad I don't have to shop this evening my bags are full of clothes.
-
With this whiplash weather, I'm biking with an entire wardrobe in my bike bags.
Heavy gloves, scarf, jacket, sweater, heavy pants for <30 on Monday, lightweight jacket, medium gloves for most mornings the rest of the week, sweater, and lightweight gloves for afternoons home.
Not going to have room for many groceries tonight.
-
Dangit, I didn't pack my jeans. I guess I'm wearing a lab coat and leggings all day.
At least it was cold enough that I had the leggings on under my rain pants.
I blame daylight savings time.
-
It seems so counterintuitive that today is not the earliest sunset of the year.
Nonetheless, I still have to get out of the lab soon, so I'm not biking in the dark.
-
Ah, a balmy 34F (1C) today, such a huge difference from 31 (-.05) in my sense of cold. I wonder if it's all psychological or if the difference between just below and just above freezing really makes such a difference.
-
Yeah-I should probably not bike when it's below freezing unless I get more winter gear.
I just warmed up enough to change out of my double layers and into regular work pants.
-
I've been using my e-bike for commuting and groceries all summer.
I'm overcome with the urge to use my mechanical bike today for a quick pop into lab to change media and a little stop at the store. Wish me luck. I may regret this.

I visited UCLA and was pretty impressed by their approach. There are huge sections of campus that are clearly marked 'WALK BICYCLES and SCOOTERS' and there are massive banks for scooter/bicycle parking. They also seemed to work with several companies that rent out scooters and those are all stored in the approved parking area.
Apparently, the fines for violations can be high and include DMV citations and they give random meal vouchers for compliance.

If you've led or attended a Power Hour for a GRC, I'd like to hear what strategies worked well and what didn't.
I'll be running one later this month. One issue I've seen in past power hours is power differentials. Specifically, PIs dominate in small-group discussions. Did you do anything to address this?
If you are a trainee/ECR, did the power hour empower you? If so how, or if not what could have been improved?
Please boost.

Our grad programs have mandatory once-a-week courses where students present to other students with a few faculty in attendance.
The goal is for students to get to practice public speaking and to share techniques/info between labs.
I attended one yesterday and was shocked to see at least four students knitting, many students glued to their phones, and others working on their computers.
Is it not considered rude to obviously ignore a speaker anymore?
