  7. Finally managed to get proper serial access to u-boot on my Samsung A5 (a5y17lte) using github.com/dsankouski/u-boot/t

I did have to break open my last a5y17lte and add lines to the internal serial port to check as it was very hard to get it working blind.

I've actually not done anything particularly special just reused other people's work but getting my head around it was a challenge. I'll publish an image file for others if they wanted to try it out (I appreciate the a5y17lte hacking club membership currently stands at 1).

  8. I'm working an #aeroponic vertical tower to grow #lettuce , 3D printer but with a solar powered battery to run the pump.
I know I'll need to adjust the run times but trying to work out what the best starting timings should be, I was thinking something like 3 minutes on and 17 off or is that too long off. I'm in the UK so currently climate is quite dry. The controller is programmed by me so I can do any combination, perhaps 1 min on and 6 mins off.

    Any suggestions?

  9. @derek sure, it’s a small 6V peristaltic pump that moves water from a 100L rainwater barrel from our house up to a second barrel which is in our higher level garden (up 2.5m) as I’m too lazy to carry the water up.

Tech wise it’s now a waveshare #esp32s2 pico which controls an #adafruit boost 1000c to control the pump, enclosed in a cheap wooden bird box. It’s powered by a #solarpanel and charges 3 supercapacitors in series. Code is in #circuitpython and takes advantage of deepsleep

  10. Water Pump Update: sadly slow progress rebuilding. I’ve found that #RaspberryPiPico just doesn’t have a good enough deep sleep state to survive the night on the supercaps so I’ve switched to an #esp32s2. But then the ESP32 board I got turns out the pin out isn’t correct so spent ages trying to work out why the adc didn’t work.
Currently testing how this new board functions attached to the #solarpanel

It’s a little frustrating as it’s holding up all my other projects!

  11. Managed to get a message out on solarcene.community that the battery was low, we've had another prolonged period of cloud including #StormDarragh and are often barely generating more then 60Wh a day. Battery got critically low yesterday and so the whole system shutdown.

I've managed to get a little bit online (network switch and the "dietpi" which manages the web requests including the blog blog.solarcene.community/ and custom 50x errors) and we are drawing 3W. Hopefully we will get a little bit of sun today though estimates are still low.

Solarcene.community will be off for the next 24hrs and perhaps even 48hrs and then I'll switch to it being online for 4hrs a day at least until the battery is in a better position.

Of course those who use solarcene won't necessarily get this message as it's offline 😁

  12. Does anyone have #solar panels installed on top of their shed and would be willing to provide a picture that I could add to my page on #stealthsolar ? It doesn't need to be particularly stealthy but extra points if it is! Would be grateful for a little information so I can credit the image appropriately.

As I work slowly on my #stealthsolar guide/book/website I'll likely be asking for more examples - but it will be at a fairly slow pace.

  13. It pains me to say this but I just managed to get 2x #ecoworthy 120W #solarpanels off am*zon for £100 (£30 off at checkout) which is pretty good deal I think.

Still working on detaching myself from that mega conglomerate but does mean I can double my solar capacity which will be great for the winter, just need to think about how I hide the panels in the garden… #stealthSolar

  14. #government #emergency #stockpiling #food #emergencies Not exactly what I wanted to see in the news headlines today. We should be OK for power banks though, and we’ve got a couple of sets of small solar panels…

  15. My solar powered water pump has finally stopped working, the silicone tubing in the peristaltic pump has degraded and started to leak.

Considering this version has been outside since 2023 and has been pumping unfiltered rain water I think it's done pretty well.

The good news is that if I replace the silicone tubing Ill be able to rebuild it and get it working again. I might simplify the control circuitry as it got a bit complicated.

Then it can get back to helping me avoid carrying water up from the bottom to the top as it's a 2.5M climb and I'm a little lazy.

  16. Do you have an example of stealth solar?

I've been thinking a lot about 'stealth solar' where people attach #solarpanels to places in a subtle way to capture the sun's energy. It might be stealth as there are strict rules or just want to keep it low key. #balconysolar is sort of stealth gone mainstream.

With cheaper MPPT devices you can now accept slightly poorer efficiency due to placement and with microinverters don't need to make long strings. I particularly think that there is no point having a solar panel in storage, best get it out there and generating even if it's in a temporary place!

So I thought I'd start a small website that documents different stealth setups, so if you have cheeky solar panels and would be willing to share a little info (but not too much if it would get you in trouble) get in touch.

  20. If you or anybody you know in or near #Mayo #CoMayo that is interested in #solar #smallsolar #SmallWeb installs, please join this workshop

    remote.wilderland.ie/events/pe

To figure out what is needed for a solar install, and how to size it. I have a few examples of some mini wind turbines I'll put up as well, for kicks :unwanted_ok:

More workshops being announced soon! See remote.wilderland.ie

  21. #decemberadventure Day 2 - oops, just went to do my adventure for the day to find that my #solar server is offline (as planned by it's power logic). Guess thats what you get when you run a #SolarServer - I should have really remembered this.

Anyway while half the reason for the system is to be sustainable the other half is to think about the psychology of how we interact with tech

  22. I slightly dropped the ball - solarcene.community is offline, we had 2 days of pretty grey clouds and didn’t noticed that while I was generating a okayish amount of power I forgot that we are using a lot more (particularly the hydroponics) - battery voltage dropped far enough that the controller shut us down to protect the battery life. Sun is out right now so hopefully will be back online soon.
