  1. It's fun playing Creative SoundBlaster EAX games on Windows XP and the SoundBlaster X-Fi SB0460, which adds reverb and environmental effects.

Windows Vista sadly pretty much killed EAX and although Alchemy was meant to keep compatibility, it was never quite the same.

  2. Fixed my capacitors on the Windows XP build, so I've been able to setup my SoundBlaster X-Fi.

Here is the splash video that comes with it for your viewing pleasure... At just 22 seconds, it's certainly a SPLASH!

  3. So after purchasing brand new blank media for my Iomega 250mb ZIP drive, was time to give this disk format tech from 1999 a go on Windows 98!

It's super quiet on file transfers and with my internal drive connected via IDE cable could easily fill a disk within a few minutes.

    Impressive stuff!

  4. Well my Windows XP build may have been delayed due to some capacitors on the motherboard needing to be replaced, but I can turn my attention to this beauty!

On the ATi Radeon X1950 Pro with 512mb memory, I decided to replace the thermal paste with fresh.

You have absolutely got to love the design on the GPU cover, they don't make them like this anymore!

  5. My retro Windows 98 computer is complete.

Finished off with an Iomega 250mb zip drive.

    AMD Athlon 2000+
    512MB RAM
    128GB IDE to Micro SD
2x Voodoo 12mb SLI graphics cards
    Matrox Mystique 220 (2D/3D)
    SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1
    Yamaha SW1000XG

It's been a really fun build!

    Beige is beautiful!

  6. Right, I have my retro PC setup with what would have been my rig back in the 90s...

    - Windows 98
    - Matrox Mystique 220 (with Rainbow Runner)
    - 2x 3dfx Voodoo 2 in SLI
    - SoundBlaster Live

What should I play after Unreal and Unreal Tournament that will make use of those lovely Voodoo 2 cards?

    Let's share some nostalgia!

  11. Listening to the Secret of Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer Soundtracks on the Roland MT-32

  12. Excited to now have a Roland MT-32 as part of my collection. Great for the first Monkey Island, Simon the Sorcerer and others.

There is a slight crack on the front panel, would love to be able to replace this if anyone knows of good replicas available?

  13. There is something oddly satisfying and dare I say therapeutic defragmenting a mechanical hard drive on Windows 98.

How many of you have carefully watched the progress as the churn and crunch of the drive is heard?

  18. Just ordered my free Mister Pi frosted Acrylic Shell as I was part of batch 1.

The Mister Pi itself has been a fantastic introduction to FPGA and the vast retro gaming devices it supports, so good to have another case, hence the expression "just in case" 🫠

  19. Got myself a nice acrylic transparent case for my Mister Pi FPGA.

Looks splendid and good to know my FPGA is protected.

  20. Having great fun with my Mister Pi FPGA. It's been a joy experimenting with all of the arcade, computer and console cores it provides to relive that retro gaming nostalgia in hardware emulation.

My recent addition is the MT32-Pi. Basically you can use a Raspberry Pi with this clever hat connected to the Mister SNAC port to achieve Roland MT-32 MIDI module support and it sounds wondrous. Of course I started with the iconic intro of Monkey Island!

  21. Received my Mister Pi this week, a much cheaper alternative to the Terasic DE10-Nano and so far everything is running great!

The number of retro consoles & computers emulated in hardware is astonishing and with the addition of VGA so I can plug with an adapter SCART into my RGB 60Hz CRT is icing on the cake.

The computer cores in particular can take some setting up, but it's worth the effort.

  22. Game MIDI music in the early to mid 1990s, the Roland Sound Canvas SC-55 and Yamaha MU80 were fantastic offerings and now great for a retro gaming PC setup.

MIDI files are extremely small as they contain only instructions of what to play, it's the Roland & Yamaha modules that contain the audio samples of hundreds of instruments. It did mean your game music could sound very different depending on your sound card's built-in MIDI capabilities or dedicated hardware.

  28. I do enjoy using the Anbernic RG35XX PLUS, but certainly the early batches had a flaw...

The headphones can cut out with audio coming and going, and after opening up I could easily see the problem.

The headphones port unit is just sitting on the pads and not soldered on properly. You can even lift the unit!

Once I soldered the joints it's been absolutely fine, but looking online I'm not the only person who had this issue. Saved me sending it back for repair.

CRT TVs for retro gaming offer stunning nostalgic qualities, but the maintenance, weight and size can be challenging. Here is my experience…

  30. Not sure how I have just the controller of the Amstrad GX4000 console, but there we have it...

It was disgustingly mucky. Inside faired a lot better, but still out comes the toothbrush and for the back in particular the baking soda as it looked really rough and it came up really nice and works great on the Amiga when enjoying some Superfrog.
