So, um, I don't remember SMB3 looking like this. Time to pull a 68pF capacitor and check to see if the Everdrive N8 has a firmware update available as I'm about 100% sure this is an MMC3 mapper issue.

Edit: originally said that SMB3 used the MMC5 mapper which was dumb, got it confused with Castlevania 3.

I'm almost 40 years old, and I have finally, for the first time ever, beaten Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I did use save states, because I make a lot of stupid mistakes in 2D platformers, and dying due to Mario being floaty was something that always put me off playing through multiple game overs to get to the end.

In a way I think having save states and emulators makes older games more accessible, especially for those of us who only have short play sessions available, or need special controller configurations in order to play. I'm super grateful to have those options available to me these days.

A question for the more technical gang here.

I know that retro consoles (with all their microcontrollers) had way different architectures than modern ones (that resemble more like a small PC) and probably this had something to do with cutting production costs and compatibility.

When did this change happen? When did consoles stop being this intricate electronical marvels and became what we have now?

The SEGA Dreamcast VMU is still such a cool thing!

When else was there ever such a fantastic way to store saved games and also include a display that you could play a little game on or view additional information while playing the console game on the TV when the VMU was connected to your Dreamcast controller.

I never thought I would see the day when I can connect my original Xbox to... Xbox Live! A service that shut down in April 2010 for the first generation Xbox console.

Thanks to @insignia, I can connect to their free Xbox Live service specifically for original Xbox games from nearly 20 years ago.

Now where did I place my original Midtown Madness 3 disc???

Fun times are coming, with a massive dose of online gaming nostalgia.
