Older consoles just where built differently. Booted up my 3ds again (after well over a year of laying around): still full battery charge.
My switch after like 5 minutes of being "off": deep-discharged and wont even show me any sign of life until I charge it for hours.

There is something special when a family member asks if you would like their old CRT TV that might otherwise have gone to landfill!
Even better, this one has hardly been used, picture is excellent and supports 50/60Hz as well as SCART RGB! Fabulous!

There is something beautiful about being able to play SEGA Dreamcast games (many of them anyway) in 480p on a VGA monitor.
It was so ahead of its time. Dead or Alive 2 still looks amazing even though it's 26 years old!

My #Anbernic RG DS was finally delivered, what a wonder of a thingamaging #retrogaming #retroconsoles
Playing The Sims 2 for Nintendo DS and Lux Pain on it right now.

It's been a rather fun Xbox system link gaming day today.
Also had a chance to check the clock capacitors on these two, which is THE capacitor that will itself decide to ruin your original Xbox at some point if left unchecked.

Modified the boot image, background and icons for my #Anbernic rg34xx sp. It's finally worthy of me ✨

Here's another Sega Mega Drive/Genesis video covering the openheart mod. You install a Raspberry Pi Pico or RP2040 into the console and it expands what it can do.

I made a small 7 min. video with some impressions of our #openingdays. A welcome experience with small steps into kdenlive. Very nice to work with. And note to myself, record in horizontal view next time ;)
Watch and enjoy

Forgot to post this: the way I usually hook up multiple consoles to the RetroTINK: the gscart EuroSCART switch. All of the consoles I own have RGB out which makes it work out pretty well.

Finally cleaned up and reorganized the consoles along with some of the audio stuff. I really need to dust more often...

The NES is 100% alive...THERE WILL BE CASTLEVANIA SOONISH.

Initial NESessity + NESRGB guide up, will probably change over the next few days during the install/verification.

Documentation: not the most fun thing in the world to do, but it does make things much, much easier for the next (or current) person. Since the NESessity + NESRGB combo doesn't use the standard `R`, `G`, or `B` pads off the NESRGB, figured it would be better if I showed where exactly you need to pull the signals off the NESRGB.
-
NESRGB + PPU installed into the mainboard. Still need to run wires to all the video pins, but this was the actual difficult part.
-
Looks like today should be the last day of NES work as the NESRGB mod is coming in today. Even better, the EuroSCART cable is coming in so I can test out the composite, S-Video, and RGB output from the console as well. I'm genuinely curious to see how different the PPU's composite output compares to the NESRGB's version. After everything is done, I'll get the blog post updated and published. Should be a fun day.

Starting to document the journey with the NESessity board + NESRGB installation. The docs are there, but they're kinda hard to put together. I'm hoping to get the information in one place and offer more clarity on how everything fits together.
-
So, after diving through a ton of information, I've made some discoveries:
1. The NESessity board doesn't use the same Mini-DIN socket that the NESRGB does.
2. The pinouts are definitely different.
3. You don't pull `R`, `G`, or `B` off of the regular spot on the NESRGB.
4. The NESessity uses the Sega Mega-Drive/Genesis 2 RGB cable. In short: don't order an NESRGB compatible RGB cable if you're using a NESessity board, use a Genesis 2 RGB cable.

#NES progress update: the NESessity v1.4 power/AV board with NESRGB support is finished, got everything soldered and it's ready to go. Still waiting some other parts to come in including the actual NESRGB. The ports from left to right: S-Video, RGB, 12V DC, stereo audio, and composite video. The long 8-pin header is where the some of the outputs of the NESRGB connect to the video outputs on the board. The chonk heatsink is for the 7805 5V LDO...there will not be anything resembling a heat issue.

So, um, I don't remember SMB3 looking like this. Time to pull a 68pF capacitor and check to see if the Everdrive N8 has a firmware update available as I'm about 100% sure this is an MMC3 mapper issue.

Edit: originally said that SMB3 used the MMC5 mapper which was dumb, got it confused with Castlevania 3.

Initial tests for the NES, nothing caught fire and everything looks great. Still waiting on the parts from Digikey and the NESRGB to come in.
-
Okay, figured out how I'm routing the palette select connections along with +5V power: the Player 1 connector. Pins 1 and 5 get me GND and +5V, and the Clock/Data/Latch signals come out of pins 2/3/4 respectively. This saves me running another set of cables directly from the power board.

It's 2025 and still the 37 year old SEGA Mega Drive console sees new amazing releases.
Earthion is a wonderful, jaw dropping, frantic & pleasing SHMUP that is accessible for newcomers to the genre and challenging for the experienced.
Bring on the cartridge in 2026! Sadly the Steam download Mega Drive ROM is encrypted, so you can't legitimately use it on your real hardware or FPGA yet.

Figured I'd take a photo of the NESessity v1.4 board. Pretty easy to build (this was a while ago as there's now a v1.6 board) and very clean. This one has a real CPU (RP2A03G) and PPU (RP2C02G-0) installed from the OG NES though you can install the clone versions (UA6527 and UA6528 respectively). The VRAM and WRAM are new chips from Alliance.

I'm almost 40 years old, and I have finally, for the first time ever, beaten Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I did use save states, because I make a lot of stupid mistakes in 2D platformers, and dying due to Mario being floaty was something that always put me off playing through multiple game overs to get to the end.
In a way I think having save states and emulators makes older games more accessible, especially for those of us who only have short play sessions available, or need special controller configurations in order to play. I'm super grateful to have those options available to me these days.
