  1. #AskingAutistics

    Terminology question!

What names and abbreviations do the behavioural therapies being used on autistic people/children have?

The ones I have so far are ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis), PBS (Positive Behavior Support), and SST (Social Skills Training).

    Shares appreciated too 💓

  4. Dear People who hold the most power in a household.

You can't expect the other people in your household to simultaneously:

    a) give precedence to your needs and feelings about things all the time,

    b) be happier when you're around than when you're not there.

Those two things just don't go together. 🤷‍♀️

  5. I also talked about monotropism; the distinctive depth and narrowness of autistic attention.

The tendency to go very deep, to struggle with switching, to get overwhelmed by competing demands - and to experience the world with such a particular intensity.

Again: not just ‘life is hard’, but a very specific way of processing and experiencing.

  6. Awesome symptom no. 12
    Unusual visual-spatial skills

Some autistic people may enjoy modelling, or imaginatively laying out gardens and interiors, or making intricate paintings/cartoons/embroideries, or drawing out maps, or even (for some) making and fixing things.

For example, I'm rather good at putting together IKEA furniture (even if, ahem, I might not manage to go to IKEA to buy it)!

  7. Awesome symptom no. 10
    Non-conformism

To an autistic person, 'because everyone else is doing it' is not a good reason for doing something! We tend to lack that sort of 'herd mentality', usually entirely.

I see this as a positive - a safeguard against bullying and mob mentality, as well as an avenue for creativity, positive risk-taking and celebrating our differences.

  8. Programmer needed 🥺

I need someone who can help me with a bit of html, css and JavaScript in a web page (putting in share buttons for social media, and sorting my image sizing).

    Anyone?!

    And reboosts much appreciated!

  9. @Frantasaur Or put from a different perspective: the allistic mind is more inclined to submit to the internalised oppression of the #postmodern #spectacle.

The ’aspie’ mind is thus considered a threat to the hegemonic system. Like out times environmentalist Joan of Arc, the openly autistic Greta Thunberg. It csn not as easily be controlled.

No wonder they’re so keen of stuffing everyone outside the ’norm’ full of meds.

Have you ever wondered why you don't always succeed very well in human society?

The ‘48 laws of power’ could go some way to explaining it!

    A thread 🧵

  11. One of the current diagnostic criteria for autism is a lack of imagination.

Would you say you lack imagination?

Whatever way you answer, I'd love to hear more detail - if you've time & inclination.

    Reposts also appreciated ☺️

Do you get, or have you ever had, recurring nightmares?

If so, what were they about? What was the atmosphere like? And - if you remember - what were your feelings in them? Was there anything else notable about them, or making them different from other dreams?

    Interested in your stories.

  13. Does anyone have advice, or know of any networks or organisations in Belfast for neurodivergent folk - where a young adult could make friends, or meet people, or so?

Any and all ideas welcome 💟😊

  14. Are people naturally selfish and lazy?

Or are we built to be collaborative, and self-motivated?

    A thread on human nature.

I found this on the Autism Speaks site:

    -----------
A: The teacher says “It’s time to clean up your toys” at the end of the day.
    B: The student yells “no!”
C: The teacher removes the toys and says “Okay, toys are all done.”

How could ABA help the student learn a more appropriate behavior in this situation?:

A: The teacher says “time to clean up” at the end of the day.
B: Student, “Can I have 5 more minutes?”
C: Teacher, “Of course you can have 5 more minutes!”

  16. Why rewards and punishments go a bit wrong with autistic children.

And why behaviorism doesn't actually 'work' 😐 (not for people's mental health and equilibrium anyway!)

  17. I really like Taylor Swift's new album. 🤷‍♀️

There are some great songs on it 🥰

Ophelia, honey, eldest daughter, actually romantic...

Even though, for me, my favourite song of hers will probably always be Style, I think ☺️

  18. Subject: Not fine in school

"What if our 'square pegs' aren't the problem? What if they're actually the canaries in the mine, alerting us to problems in our education system?"

  19. Hey, imagine if we had a school system model that made every single child feel they're not quite good enough, and some children feel like they're worse than useless? 😁

    Oh. We do. 🤔
