  1. Did a fresh install of #AlpineLinux. Switched to Edge to have an updated #Plasma desktop, and everything was great. So I set up #NetworkManager because wpa_supplicant makes me want to punch kittens whenever I have to use something other than my home network. Which worked great.

Start my laptop this morning, though, and it won't get pas starting the display manager during boot.

    *sigh*

So… now I get to manually fix some config files or something I guess. Shoulda gone with #XFCE

(Before anyone jumps on me, I obviously fucked up something in the configuration, this isn't #KDE's fault, and I 100% own that this is my fault. As usual, the Owlbear should not be taken seriously.) #Linux

  7. Spent the evening migrating my laptop (XPS 9700) from Debian to Alpine.

    <gasp - horror - shudder>

Installing is a different experience compared to generic PC hardware. There was a number of things I had to chase manually like wifi, audio, Dell firmware support but it wasn't a big deal. Debian takes care of those things for you on the laptop during install (non-free install ofc).

The Alpine wiki is quite good. Everything I needed to get things going was there.

Network Manager is still a pain in the a55 but on a laptop I'll deal with it. Ha.

  10. Announcing the release of #fbp and #f_scripts 0.6! This marks the first #framebufferphone releases in almost 2 years, and I'm so proud of the amount of learning that went into these releases. I'm picking up where Miles Alan left off in order to create the ultimate framebuffer-based UI for #MobileLinux. Packaging should be making its way into #pmOS/#Alpinelinux soon (tm), and I've created a PR to get this UI option merged into #Danctnix Arch ARM.

  14. I have an HP #EliteDesk 705 G3 (4core 3.1-3.8GHz 28nm AMD A12-9800E GB: 656s 1512m) with 16GB RAM. I've been trying to find a smaller, lighter, more power efficient replacement. I was looking at the #Radxa Zero 2 Pro (6core Armv8 1.8-2.2GHz 12nm GB: 375s 1133m) 4GB RAM. Then I remembered I have a Pixel 3a (GB: 367s 1221m) 4GB RAM, and I just got a $99 OnePlus 6T (GB: 524s 1747m) 8GB RAM. So it's hard to justify the #RadxaZero2Pro #SBC just for #AlpineLinux. What would you do in this situation?

  17. All of that is not a knock on Alpine Linux! I'm currently running a VM with Debian and Webmin to run my Samba share. After reading some Alpine Linux documentation, I really think I could just move that Samba share to a tiny Alpine Linux VM instead and use even less resources.

It's just that Alpine Linux is apparently the wrong tool for the job for my dial-up project.

  20. I finally got Linux support for the #Rockwork #Pebble client ready for merge, and now I find out #AlpineLinux is (justifiably) phasing out Qt5 packaging, so I can't actually use it. 🫠

Makes sense… time to port it to Qt6!

    blog.emeraldonion.org/evolving

A new blog post where @alexhaydock goes into some detail showcasing our minimalistic @alpinelinux Tor relays architecture, a threat model, and including a link to our now-public open source "Emerald Relays" orchestration framework.

The past 6 months have proven its success, and now we look forward to phase 2 (read the post!), which we need your help in funding. Emerald Onion is a U.S. 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit, so please consider donating before 31 December! emeraldonion.org/donate/

  29. Apparently there is no good STL viewer for (let alone ), let alone one that auto-refreshes when the file changes.

And @alpinelinux doesn't have :openscad: packaged for , so using alpine doesn't work either...

Leaves online STL viewers where you have to re-navigate to the STL when it changes. Meh, but it works.

Context: works perfectly on to do parametric 3D design. Just an STL viewer with auto-refresh is missing.

  30. Thank you for showing the power of open source via a Linux distro that doesn’t use systemd or GNU core utils!
