#Luas in #Dublin, #Ireland is marking International Women’s Day 2026 on Sunday 8 March, a global event first observed in 1911 that recognises the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while calling for faster progress on gender equality. This year’s theme, #GiveToGain, highlights the role everyone can play in creating a fairer society.
As a diverse organisation, Luas values inclusion to attract talent, encourage innovation and uphold equal opportunity. To mark the day, Luas is highlighting the contribution of women across the transport sector, increasing visibility and showing women and girls that careers in transport are open to all. The company is encouraging people to support women in their communities and workplaces, reinforcing that progress comes from shared action.

The #Dublin #Transportation Office’s 2001 final report set out an integrated #transport strategy for the Greater Dublin Area, #Ireland, from 2000 to 2016. It planned major rail expansion centred on #Luas and a fully segregated #Metro. Luas was defined as on-street light rail for corridors beyond bus capacity, with several lines under construction and further north–south and east–west routes proposed. Capacity was expected to reach up to 6,400 passengers per hour per direction, rising with priority measures. The Metro was designed as a high-capacity system, fully separated from traffic, using longer and faster #trains. Its core spine was planned from Swords to Shanganagh, with a loop linking major suburbs. Some Luas sections were earmarked for later Metro upgrade. Underground works were seen as essential, including city centre tunnels, a central #underground hub, and a heavy rail inter-connector linking key mainline stations.

The Emerging Preferred Route (EPR) for #Luas #Cork – an 18km light rail line in #Ireland from #Ballincollig to Mahon Point with up to 25 stops – has been launched and is now open for public consultation until Monday 9th June at 5.30pm. The proposed route connects key locations including MTU, CUH, UCC, Cork city centre, Kent Station, the Docklands, and Mahon. Plans include a new public #transport bridge, cycling infrastructure, a 1,000-space Park & Ride in Ballincollig, and a #Mobility Hub in Mahon. Luas Cork supports Ireland’s fastest-growing city, expected to grow by 50–60% over the next 20 years, by improving public transport, reducing car dependency, and cutting emissions. As one of Europe’s first climate-neutral cities, Cork’s transformation is key to national and #EU climate goals. The public is encouraged to take part in the consultation and help shape this major infrastructure project.

#Transport for #London (TfL) advises customers to check travel plans ahead of planned strike action by #ASLEF, which will disrupt Elizabeth line services on 27 February, 1 March, 8 March, and 10 March. On 27 February and 1 March, most of the line will be closed, with a reduced service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. There will be no service between Abbey Wood and Heathrow/Reading. Customers should consider alternative transport, such as the Piccadilly line for Heathrow. Other #TfL services will be busier than usual, with planned works on the DLR and other lines on 1 and 8 March. TfL urges #ASLEF to suspend the strikes while talks continue.

#London TravelWatch has expressed frustration over further delays to the introduction of contactless payment at stations serving #Stansted #Airport, warning the rollout may not take place until next summer. The watchdog said it has long pressed for the upgrade and that the setback means passengers will continue to face inconvenience when travelling to and from the airport. It urged train operators to provide clear and accurate information so travellers are not misled about the availability of contactless payment and do not risk being caught out when planning their journeys. London TravelWatch stressed that transparent communication is essential while the industry works to deliver the long-promised improvements.

From 14 December 2025, pay as you go (PAYG) with contactless cards and devices will be available at 30 more National Rail stations in South-East #England. However, the rollout at 20 additional stations, including #Stansted and #Southend airports on Greater Anglia services, has been delayed until summer 2026 after testing revealed system faults. The issues mean passengers at these key airport stations will continue to rely on traditional tickets for several months, highlighting challenges in integrating rail fares with #Transport for #London systems. Rail operators stress the delay is necessary to ensure reliability, but it underscores persistent technical hurdles in modernising ticketing.
