Wilsons Auctions #Newcastle will host a commercial vehicle auction on Wednesday 4 March at 11am, featuring five vintage AEC #Routemaster #buses entered on behalf of #Transport for #London. Built in the early 1960s, the iconic red double deckers are among the last original Routemasters to have served in the capital. Each remains in running condition following careful maintenance during its operational life. The sale forms part of the auction house’s regular weekly commercial vehicle offering. The buses are currently located at TfL’s West Ham Depot and may be viewed by appointment from 18–20 February. Bidding will take place in person in Newcastle, with live online participation available.

#TfL issued a response to a request about the withdrawal of New #Routemaster #buses from routes 8 and 16 and any plans to remove them from other services. The requester noted strong public support for the vehicles and highlighted their design benefits for disabled, neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ passengers, citing features such as calming lighting, colour contrast and the multi-door layout. They asked for any Equality Impact Assessments and for papers or correspondence from the Independent Disability Advisory Group relating to these decisions, and raised concerns that earlier queries had not addressed accessibility issues. TfL said that, after carrying out the required searches under the Freedom of Information Act and its information access policy, it does not hold any information relevant to the questions submitted.

This set of unofficial edited drawings illustrates the experimental #Routemaster (XRM), a forward-thinking #London bus concept developed by London Transport in the 1970s. Designed with a low-floor chassis, three doors, and two staircases, it aimed to offer full wheelchair accessibility—a revolutionary feature at the time. Diagrams include both four-axle and two-axle versions with alternative layouts, highlighting dedicated wheelchair spaces. Despite its potential, the XRM project was abandoned in the early 1980s due to financial, technical, and institutional hurdles, marking a missed opportunity for early accessible public #transport in London.

LT split a £17m order for 450 new double-deck buses equally between British Leyland's "Titan" and Metro-Cammell Weymann's "Metrobus" models, with an option for more. Both designs featured separate front and centre exits, with Metrobuses being lower and both promising a quieter, smoother ride. Additionally, LT acquired 68 AEC #Routemaster #buses from London Country Bus Services for £140,000 to combat bus shortages. 30 were immediately serviceable, 20 for training, and 18 for overhaul or spares. Some were already in North London service.

The proposed XRM Superbus, LT’s planned successor to the #Routemaster for the late 1980s, was likely to be scrapped in favour of enhancing existing models—the Titan and the Metrobus. Dr David Quarmby, speaking at an AMA conference, revealed that a review of the XRM project had led to the conclusion that further investment in a completely new design offered only marginal engineering advantages at a high cost.

Instead, LT aimed to work with Leyland Vehicles and Metro-Cammell-Weymann to develop improved versions of the Titan and Metrobus, focusing on weight reduction and better electrical system reliability.

Operational studies had shown that alternative door and staircase layouts offered little benefit. The conventional configuration—front entrance and centre exit—remained the most effective for busy routes. A final decision on the XRM’s future awaited approval from the LT Executive Board and the Greater London Council.

Between 2014 and 2017, Alexander Dennis Limited’s annual reports highlighted challenges in the #London bus market due to New #Routemaster orders by #Transport for London. Despite this, it maintained strong UK market share and expanded its Enviro200 and Enviro400, including electric models.

Two years into bus deregulation, GM Buses (formerly Greater #Manchester Buses) became the latest operator to breathe new life into the famous AEC #Routemaster. They leased ten Routemasters from London #Buses to introduce crew-operation on a route between West Didsbury and Manchester city centre. In line with their London roots, the GM bus route was named the Piccadilly Line for marketing purposes. A GM Buses spokesman said, “We retained the traditional London bus red for the livery, but the vehicles carry the GM Buses logo.” The buses garnered significant interest from the press and public, with heavy passenger loadings on the route.
