  10. #Carbondioxide levels in atmosphere break new records in human history
We know #netzero #emission will help us limit global temperature increases. Why are they not priority for #politicians?
"Current atmospheric concentrations of #CO2 are higher than at any time in at least two million years. Concentrations of #CH4 and #N2O are higher than at any time in at least 800,000 years.”
Through burning of #fossilfuels and #deforestation, there is increase in CO2 of 50% in 200yr.

  11. CW: Dairy manure 🧵

    @agriculture

We should contain industrial methods to the North:

"The diversity of #manure management practices on #dairy farms is high, with #intensification favoring liquid manure management. This trend increases the potential for both #CH4 and #N2O emissions, and the need for mitigation."

"In warmer climates the CH4 #mitigation potential and relative importance of manure treatment technologies would be greater."

  12. Can soil #carbon sequestration in #grassland offset GHG #emissions from ruminants? Such #sequestration is time-limited. 2x the carbon in managed grasslands would be needed to offset continuous #methane & N2O emissions from the global ruminant sector: doi.org/10.1038/s41467-023-434 (1/2)

  13. Due to acid rain, countries lowered SO2 emissions from industry and power plants. But SO2 is also a coolant via cloud-seeding aerosols. See Glen Peters' tweet: globally -0.5°C from 2010-2019. A very short lifetime of mere days means, SO2 molecules cool only locally, while methane and CO2 heat all.

SO2 is emitted by burning coal and ship fuel, & in #volcanism.
The other major coolant NOx, also short-lived with regional not global direct forcing, is emitted by burning fossil fuels eg in cars, and lightening storms & biomass burning.
So when our emissions drop, local heating goes up: " #TerminationShock".

When I say "local heating goes up", I should add that via wind and land-atmosphere and ocean-atmosphere interaction, this local heating also has global repercussions. Eg., wind drives the warm-er air parcel across the globe. So a warmer China and Japan who ditched SO2 and NOx, also heat the #Pacific.

Lowering SO2 and NOx while N2O (fertilizer), CH4 and CO2 emissions still rise is rather stupid.

  15. "#NitrousOxide is the third leading driver of #ClimateChange after carbon dioxide and methane. On a pound-for-pound basis, N2O is 273 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2. Unlike other climate super-pollutants like methane, it is long-lived, remaining in the atmosphere for more than a century.

Existing abatement technologies have the potential to reduce industrial N2O emissions up to 99 percent. "

#GreenhouseGases such as carbon dioxide (#CO2), methane (#CH4), and nitrous oxide (#N2O), absorb infrared radiation as it passes through the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are measured at sites around the world.

  18. What's bothering me the most about the recent popularity of nitrous oxide as a drug, is its incredible greenhouse effect

1kg of N2O is the equivalent of 298kg of CO2!! Almost 12x worse than methane

A 2kg cylinder (as I often find over here) is the equivalent of 596kg of CO2, or driving 4260 kilometers!

Absolutely breaks my heart seeing the police release tens of kg of N2O in the air during raids, its an ecological scandal if you ask me
