The production of Caprolactam, a chemical used to make Nylon fibers👕 and certain types of plastics, results in significant N₂O emissions, a potent greenhouse gas🌿🏠🔥. Most EU🇪🇺 producers largely avoid these emissions. Some have made investments in drastic emission reduction in recent years. But many of these low-emitting factories are now shutting down.

What's bothering me the most about the recent popularity of nitrous oxide as a drug, is its incredible greenhouse effect
1kg of N2O is the equivalent of 298kg of CO2!! Almost 12x worse than methane
A 2kg cylinder (as I often find over here) is the equivalent of 596kg of CO2, or driving 4260 kilometers!
Absolutely breaks my heart seeing the police release tens of kg of N2O in the air during raids, its an ecological scandal if you ask me

Zhu (Iowa State U): Drainage of wetland prairie in Iowa led to ag land. How does drainage system (intensity & spacing) affect N2O in context of ag systems. Field flux measurements and depth flux measurements => fertilizer pulses N2O flux MUCH (x10+) bigger then freeze/thaw pulse + no drain increases N2O emissions. N2O in subsoil is inverse from surface emissions ? possibly due to microbial community anoxic conditions. Drainage reduces N2O emissions by 8 kg ha-1 yr-1.

N2O is the 3rd-most important greenhouse gas (after methane and CO2). Most of it is produced in agriculture and is difficult to avoid. But a substantial amount is emitted in the chemical industry - and avoiding it there is very cheap. It's not just about #carbon, that's truly limited and inefficient thinking.
All #GreenhouseGasses are a problem, including #NitrousOxide (#N2O).
Just as we successfully acted to save the #Ozone layer, we can do Everything, Everywhere, All at Once to preserve what remains of our total #environment.
It's terrifying and critical but it's not hopeless, it's possible.
