  4. I didn't know this: There's an online video of one of my lectures about LGBT characters on 20th-century U.S. television, with lots of video clips. 😊

It's a virtual talk I gave last year for the Union Public Library in New Jersey. This was a condensed version of what is usually a longer presentation.

  5. Today is the birthday of stage and screen actor Carlton Carpenter, who died in 2022 at age 95.

In 1954, he played one of American TV's first identifiably gay characters, when NBC broadcast a production of the 1941 Broadway musical LADY IN THE DARK. The show takes place largely in the offices of a fashion magazine, and Carpenter played the supporting role of Russell, an overwrought gay fashion photographer (originally played on stage by Danny Kaye). Here's a short video clip: youtu.be/Z3vYAqTwKV4

In interviews in the 1980s, Carpenter talked about what it was like to be a gay actor in 1950s Hollywood, and the lengths that the studio went to in order to build up a fake macho and heterosexual image for him.

  6. Pat Robertson has died. Ding-dong!

(Feel free to read that as a Wizard of Oz reference or just as me calling the former Rev. Robertson a complete ding-dong.)

    WITH MAYOR LINDSAY - 4/19/1970, WNEW-TV, NYC

In 1970, New York City's cops and government were still regularly harassing queer communities, raiding queer bars, arresting people, and engaging in job discrimination.

Mayor Lindsay refused to do anything about it or even meet with gay activists. So the Gay Activists Alliance disrupted the mayor's TV talk show to demand action. Some of it was questions shouted from the audience: "What are you doing to end job discrimination against homosexuals?" "Are you in favor of repeal of the sodomy laws?" And some was heckling: The mayor says "If you're stuck in a traffic jam, it's illegal to blow your horn." A GAA member shouts back "It's illegal in New York to blow anything!"

The show aired that night with the disruptions meticulously edited out. Ten days later, GAA had a meeting with Deputy Mayor Aurelio.

  9. Hung out yesterday in Seattle with queer TV historian extraordinaire Matt Baume, author of the new book HI HONEY, I'M HOMO, an entertaining, well-researched history of queer characters on American sitcoms and TV specials. He's a nice, smart guy who is clearly enthusiastic about his subject matter. Check out Matt's videos on YouTube.

At the coffee shop, he showed me his dog-eared, heavily annotated copy of my own book, Alternate Channels, which was awfully sweet of him.

The parts I've read tonight are very good, exploring not just the content of 20th-century and early-21st-century sitcoms but also the behind-the-scenes planning, activism, and machinations that shaped them.

In this episode: Early in the AIDS crisis, several characters get tested for HIV. Elektra finally has her surgery, over her boyfriend's objections. Two characters struggle with body-image insecurities. Script written by Janet Mock.

One of the things I love about POSE is that trans women were in the writing room and on the producing team early on. It makes all the difference when a group's stories aren't being told entirely by people outside that group's experience.

  16. I'm watching the Tony Awards telecast, hearing one male winner after another thank his husband or boyfriend, and am loving it.

Anyone remember the 1983 Tonys, when Harvey Fierstein's "Torch Song Trilogy" won Best Play, and producer John Glines thanked his male partner, and lots of people completely lost their shit about it? So glad we're way past that!

  17. My attempt at cleaning up the video and sound on a 1956 talk show about homosexuality, which treats same-sex desire more or less as an illness. But hey, it was progress that they were discussing this then-taboo subject on 1950s TV at all.

Here are the first 2 minutes of the show. The first few seconds are the unprocessed original file, after which the picture and audio restoration begins. The video looks a bit overprocessed but the tech is slowly getting there.

(The tools used here were NeatVideo, Topaz Video AI [Iris model with manually adjusted settings], iZotope audio software, Premiere, and the voice enhancer on Adobe Podcast.)

TALES OF THE CITY - 6/7/2019, Netflix

A more diverse cast and writing team brought to life this long-awaited continuation of the 1993-2001 set of limited-run TV series based on Armistead Maupin's novels. Maupin's stories dealt with a mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, straight and cis characters who formed a family of choice while living in a house in San Francisco.

In the revival, whose plot was original to the Netflix series, all new trans roles were cast with trans or enby actors and there was greater racial diversity than in the earlier TV incarnations.

    P.O.V.: "Tongues Untied" - 7/16/1991, PBS

Marlin Riggs' acclaimed 1989 film mixes conventions of performance art, poetry and documentary to explore lives of Black gay men in a society that seeks to silence and marginalize both of those identities.

The 1991 broadcast of TONGUES UNTIED became a centerpiece of right-wing attempts to defund PBS in the 1990s.

Many PBS stations ran disclaimers before the show (like the one seen at the start of this clip, from WHYY-TV in Philadelphia), and some refused to air the film at all.
