  1. Armistead Maupin, author of my beloved "Tales of the City" books and screenplays, has had a blog for a few months.

This story was just published, about his very first gay experience in the summer of 1969. It's sweet. There are about 10 "episodes" so far, all of them in his signature storytelling style.

For all my fellow car enthusiasts, he included this photo with his Sunbeam Alpine.

  2. When I reread Armistead Maupin's "TALES OF THE CITY," I always picture Elaine's Minneapolis apartment as the one owned by trans heroine Anna Madrigal, and home to the other characters in the series. 7. There is an audiobook of 'The Days of Anna Madrigal' by Armistead Maupin, performed by Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway). In case someone else is as excited about this combination as I am. 🏳️‍⚧️🖖

  8. The wonderful #NathanLane reading for #LettersLive. #LGBT #gay

"#ArmisteadMaupin's #TalesOfTheCity books chronicle the lives and loves of a group of unique people living in San Francisco in the late 1970s. Probably the most beloved of these characters is Michael 'Mouse' Tolliver, a gay man who in the second novel, discovers that his parents have joined Anita Bryant's campaign in Florida to quell the rights of gays. He later writes a letter to his mother."

  9. Reading Tales of the City for the first time. It is undoubtedly very good and enjoyable. That said, it’s nothing like as “fun” as everyone’s made it out to be.

Reminds me a lot of Withnail and I.

  10. I've loved Laura Linney ever since the PBS showing of Tales of the City in the 90s.

This is a charming conversation with her in the New York Times. Gift link

  11. 1/thread

Here is my 1/4 of the way through review of #MonaOfTheManor (the new book in the #TalesOfTheCity series) by Armistead Maupin. I will be carefully avoiding spoilers but will be sharing a few things of a more general nature

    1. This book is classic Armistead, with lots of twists and turns.

    2. The best I can tell, the book I think is set around 1993. This timing is especially important because this is a short time before the widespread availability of the #AIDS cocktail of drugs that began to turn the tide of the epidemic. The book depicts well the terror of these days, but also the fact that #Queer folks kept living their lives with as much dignity and joy as they could muster.

  12. #MonaOfTheManor, the 10th volume of #ArmisteadMaupin's #TalesOfTheCity series is supposed to be released on March 5th (tomorrow).

I already have it preordered on Audible and supposedly it will be listenable on March 5, but my question is --- which time zone are they going with as the time to turn it on (and can I game the system by using a VPN to access the book sooner)? I've tried this once (so that I had an Australian IP address where it already is Mar 5), but no luck.

So... if any #TOTC fans figure out a way to get the book sooner, please speak up because I'm chomping at the bit to read this next installment of my favorite series of books. --- And I'm planning to buy the ebook too, so if anyone has luck getting access to the ebook today, please speak up!

And always, eternal gratitude must always be extended to Armistead for creating characters that I care about so much, and for humanizing #LGBTQ people in literature, before most were ready to do so.

  13. I need help from someone in the city, please:

I'm out of town but would like to make a BARBARY lane street sign.
I tried to figure out how high it should be. Could anyone measure the size of a normal street sign in the city, please?

(Any sign would be fine even if #Macondray Ln would be cool ;-)

You would do me and the community a huge favor!

(I'll hand the PDF out for everybody for free of course. Here is my first attempt: realhippie.com/material/BARBAR )

    (Boosts welcome.
    - Excuse me, @announcements / @seb maybe? 😘)

  14. @willmckinley
I remember watching it when it aired. Today it would be tame, then it was a little shocking, voyeur-like, to watch back then.

Lance Loud went on to be out and an actor, most notably to me as one of the bitchy queens in the serial adaptation of #TalesOfTheCity by #ArmisteadMaupin

Just discovered this - my favorite author talking to a BBC interviewer about the albums he would bring if he were stuck on a desert island. This is delightful!

  16. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

TALES OF THE CITY - 6/7/2019, Netflix

A more diverse cast and writing team brought to life this long-awaited continuation of the 1993-2001 set of limited-run TV series based on Armistead Maupin's novels. Maupin's stories dealt with a mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, straight and cis characters who formed a family of choice while living in a house in San Francisco.

In the revival, whose plot was original to the Netflix series, all new trans roles were cast with trans or enby actors and there was greater racial diversity than in the earlier TV incarnations.
