  1. 🎶✨ Revisit the Legal Chaos & Cultural Charm of Ally McBeal

Miniskirts, courtroom quirks, and a soundtrack that defined the ’90s Ally McBeal wasn’t just TV, it was a pop culture revolution. 👩‍⚖️💼

Tap to explore how this surreal series turned legal drama into a soulful, feminist, fantasy-filled ride.

  2. Farewell to Mark Snow (1946-2025) — composer of memorable music for TV and film for 50 years.

He literally leaned into THE X-FILES theme on his keyboard after creator Chris Carter rejected previous attempts.

Perhaps you were raised on this or had to endure it when your kids were small, or you just heard about it and had a feeling. CT public radio has a podcast (of course they do!) all about Barney. He was the 3rd top selling entertainer in the early years.

  4. Tonight in 1990 — Laura Palmer’s killer was revealed on TWIN PEAKS.

ABC insisted, and David Lynch and Mark Frost delivered a chilling episode.

But Lynch hated closure, and he got his payback with a finale cliffhanger it took 25 years to resolve. And even then, he still left us wondering.

  5. Tonight in 1995 — MURDER ONE debuted on ABC.

Steven Bochco's legal drama was pre-SOPRANOS Peak TV, but lost its one-case serialized format in Season 2 — as well as stars like Daniel Benzali + Stanley Tucci.

Why this show isn't on ad-supported streaming or SVOD is beyond me.

  6. CW: TV show

"Can it really have been 30 years since Angela Chase developed a life-consuming crush on Jordan Catalano just because of the way he leaned? My So-Called Life, created by Winnie Holzman, made its TV debut on 25 August 1994".

  10. TIL there's a rerun channel devoted to Black-led sitcoms from the '90s and 2000s.

Dabl is now operated by MeTV parent Weigel Broadcasting.

It's good to see the nostalgia space expand in creative ways.

  11. Lexx is of course the greatest scifi TV series ever made. It takes the established conventions of TV scifi and thoroughly stomps them. Crazy, stylish, sexy, sleazy, goofy, dark, wildly inventive, with no regard for good taste.

  12. Tonight in 1996 — MURDER ONE ended its first season on ABC.

Steven Bochco's legal drama was pre-SOPRANOS Peak TV, but lost its one-case serialized format in Season 2 — as well as stars like Daniel Benzali + Emmy nominee Stanley Tucci.

It's not streaming, which is a crime.

  13. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

    P.O.V.: "Tongues Untied" - 7/16/1991, PBS

Marlin Riggs' acclaimed 1989 film mixes conventions of performance art, poetry and documentary to explore lives of Black gay men in a society that seeks to silence and marginalize both of those identities.

The 1991 broadcast of TONGUES UNTIED became a centerpiece of right-wing attempts to defund PBS in the 1990s.

Many PBS stations ran disclaimers before the show (like the one seen at the start of this clip, from WHYY-TV in Philadelphia), and some refused to air the film at all.

  14. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

    DONAHUE - 7/14/1992, Syndicated

This talk show episode looked at how families react when the person they've known as "Dad" comes out as #trans and transitions. Note the privileging of the relatives' experience. (Aired on this date in many cities.)

  15. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

HBO COMEDY HALF HOUR - 7/14/1994, HBO

Two great stand-up comics, Bob Smith and Suzanne Westenhoefer, starred in HBO's first two comedy specials headlined by gay performers doing gay material. Their specials aired back to back on the same night, two weeks after the Stonewall 25 celebrations.

These were HBO's first queer stand-up specials but not commercial cable's first. For instance, the Ha! network (a predecessor of Comedy Central) ran a Frank Maya special in August 1990, and Comedy Central ran its first OUT THERE special in December 1993.

  16. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

    NORTHERN EXPOSURE - 7/12/1990, CBS

Premiere of this brilliantly quirky drama series set in Cicely, Alaska. The episode includes the first of many references to the town's being founded long ago by a devoted, loving female couple: Cicely and Roslyn.

The next year, a flashback episode of NORTHERN EXPOSURE would focus on Cicely and Roslyn's story.

  17. TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

    CUTTERS - 7/9/1993, CBS

One of the first American TV series to feature a black gay regular role was this short-lived sitcom set in a combination barbershop/beauty salon. Julius Carrey plays the supporting role of Troy King, an Olympic track gold medalist turned hair stylist.

Judging from this episode, Troy was mainly there as a sounding board for (and occasional resolver of) the leads' heterosexual problems. This was typical of TV's handling of queer regulars at the time. Episode guides list no episodes that gave him his own plots. CUTTERS was produced in 1992, but CBS executives were unimpressed and decided to shelve it and burn it off in the summer.
