W tej sprawie nic nie jest kwestią przypadku, a rodzina producenta Smilka od wielu lat sympatyzuje ze skrajną prawicą.
W 2014 roku Michał Łusiak – główny technolog Smilka oraz Adam Łusiak – dyspozytor firmy, startowali w wyborach samorządowych z listy Komitetu Wyborczego Nowej Prawicy Janusza Korwina-Mikkego.
W 2019 roku Małgorzata Łusiak, żona Włodzimierza Łusiaka, kandydowała w wyborach do Sejmu w okręgu bydgoskim z listy Konfederacji Wolność i Niepodległość.W składach lokalnych komisji wyborczych w Nakle i okolicach zasiadały natomiast na przestrzeni lat pracownice Smilka. Mowa o Milenie Nowakowskiej – głównej księgowej, Sandrze Zalewskiej – specjalistce PR oraz Oldze Wierzewskiej – asystentce dyrektora. Wszystkie zostały zgłoszone do pracy w komisjach przez Konfederację."
