  8. Okay, here's a curly #music sourcing problem… my mother recently started getting back into #ScottishCountryDancing after a long hiatus, and is now teaching it here in Brisbane.

It came up in her group that there's a dance they haven't done they'd like to do: "The Road to the Isles".

    scottish-country-dancing-dicti

The music for this was composed by Pipe Major John McLellan DCM… There are a few versions of it floating around, but for the dance (a #strathspey) which is danced with four couples; the music needs to more-or-less "repeat" 4 times.

I did find a #MIDI version of it here: whitestick.co.uk/midi.html -- which hosts a version sequenced by Barry Taylor.

I managed to get Rosegarden + timidity + alsa + pipewire playing well enough together to get it playing and possibly manipulate it.

I also managed to get timidity on the command line to render the MIDI file to a (not great sounding) MP3.

I figure I can possibly edit this file to get what this group is after… but I wonder if someone knows where to buy/download… a suitable copy that someone has performed and recorded? Something performed by real musicians, rather than a MIDI file that's been ham-fistedly edited by a software geek is likely going to be a better option.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. I designed an outfit which is: strawberry blonde curly hair, pink velvet top with gold heart in the centre, white lace sleeves with white fur detail, white lace skirt with wiring to create a (very short) ballgown shape, (and fur) pink stockings with lace at the top, gold sandals.

  10. It turns out it may be better to have (genetically) curly than straight hair (or no hair at all), 👩🏽‍🦱 especially under extreme heat and/or sun exposure - shows a recent study by
    @TinaLasisi
    et al. 🧬
Tightly curled hair came off best in their experiment than other hair types (bald head, straight hair, moderately curled hair) regarding minimising sweating and overheating.

  11. @ethanschoonover - I've referred to them as "squirrelly brackets" or "squirrelly braces" or "curly brackets" for as long as I've been using a computer (and I received my #CompSci degree decades ago). I'm pretty sure my professors from decades ago used those terms interchangeably too. #squirrelly #brackets #braces #curly #SquirrellyBrackets

  12. Really what is the point of #PowerSlap if no one makes Curly Howard “Whoop-Whoop-Whoop”sounds?

  13. Other owners of long, curly hair: What do you do to prevent or remove tangles?

I had much shorter hair pre-pandemic, so I'm relatively new at this. (It's now even longer than in my profile pic.)

  14. Okay, more C (or just generally curly-braces-style-languages) discourse: I am a strong believer in aggressively using braces everywhere.

Very occasionally I will omit them on single-line if/for/while statements, but even that makes me feel uncomfortable.

I've seen far too many bugs resulting from not being aggressive about block delimiter usage over the years.

Bonus: Diffs adding/removing single lines of code are cleaner.

Toy systems language choice: braces are *required*.
