Als een van de laatste Europese landen schafte Nederland in 1863 de slavernij alsnog officieel af. Het staatstoezicht’ dat daarop volgde duurde tot 1873 en gold voor vrijwel alle tot slaaf gemaakten. Hoewel op papier ze vrij waren moest er nog 10 jaar gedwongen onbetaald op de plantages doorgewerkt worden. De tien jaar regel gold overigens alleen voor Suriname.

Op 1 juli, #KetiKoti/ #Diadiabolishon/ #EmancipationDay zijn we samen om te herdenken en te vieren.

Dat doen we onder andere tijdens de OPTOCHT #ZUIDOOST BESEFT.

We staan stil bij de herdenking van het #Slavernijverleden en de doorwerking daarvan in het heden.

We maken zichtbaar dat invulling geven aan “na de komma” noodzakelijk is met diverse culturen.

#VayhishtaMiskin, onze #BIJ1 stadsdeelbestuurder in Zuidoost organiseert deze optocht met haar collega's voor de derde keer. Voor iedereen die gelijkwaardigheid in alle vormen belangrijk vindt. Voor iedereen die tegen de hedendaagse doorwerkingen zoals racisme, ongelijkheid, en uitsluiting is. Voor iedereen die het vieren van vrijheid belangrijk vindt.

We willen er met zoveel mogelijk BIJ1-ers bij zijn. Doe jij ook mee?

De optocht vertrekt dit jaar vanaf de Dam om 10:30u en gaat via een indrukwekkende stadsroute naar het Oosterpark, waar we om ongeveer om 13:30u aansluiten bij de #NationaleHerdenkingSlavernijverleden.

Omdat de deelnemers aan de optocht #ZuidoostBeseft ook worden voorzien van tasjes en een GVB dagkaart, is het van belang om je vooraf aan te melden.

➡️ Herdenken, vieren, voortzetten

Met Keti Koti vieren we de dag waarop de slavernij in #Suriname en de Nederlandse Antillen werd afgeschaft. En hoewel niemand van een ander persoon hun oordeel afhankelijk zou moeten zijn in hun vrijheid, vieren we dit moment van verbroken ketenen als moment van samenkomst. Daarbij is Keti Koti een dag van herdenken door stil te staan bij de door #Nederland toegebrachte wonden uit het verleden, hoe dit land rijk en welvarend is geworden op de ruggen van tot slaaf gemaakte mensen.

Laat vandaag dus ook een dag zijn om ons te verenigen in de voortdurende en noodzakelijke strijd tegen #racisme, #imperialisme en #discriminatie. Het is immers zwart verzet waaraan we zowel de afschaffing van slavernij als de viering hiervan te danken hebben. Mitchell Esajas benadrukt dit in zijn artikel in OneWorld waar hij aangeeft dat Keti Koti is voortgekomen uit een lange geschiedenis van protest- en emancipatiebewegingen vanuit Surinaamse, Caribische en Afrikaanse gemeenschappen. Vooral vanaf de jaren 50 werd 1 juli een belangrijk moment van samenkomst en strijd van die gemeenschappen. In 1963 vond de eerste Bigi Spikri protestmars plaats in het centrum van Amsterdam, met spandoeken waarop stond ‘Keti Koti Fri Moe De’ (verbroken ketenen, vrijheid moet er zijn) en ‘Vrijheid voor de Onderdrukten’.

… Op 1 juli 2021 bood de Amsterdamse burgemeester Halsema officiële excuses aan "voor de belangrijke rol die deze stad en haar bestuurders hadden in de handel in mensen". Dezelfde dag overhandigde het Adviescollege Dialooggroep Slavernijverleden het rapport Ketenen van het Verleden aan minister van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties Ollongren. Hierin wordt de regering opgeroepen 1 juli als een nieuwe nationale feestdag vast te stellen.

Waarom Keti Koti als nationale vrije dag? Het slavernijverleden is óns verleden. Van ons allemaal. Het is onze gedeelde geschiedenis, ook van witte Nederlanders. Dat verleden zit in alles om ons heen. Van de gebouwen in onze steden, tot aan de banken en multinationals. De gevolgen van de slavernij zijn nog zeer aanwezig en voelbaar. Racisme en kolonisatie speelden een belangrijke rol bij de vorming van onze samenleving en die vorming werkt nu nog door. Een gelijkwaardige samenleving voor iedereen is onmogelijk zonder dit te erkennen.

Wan switi manspasi dey!

Keti Koti is een van oorsprong Surinaamse feestdag, jaarlijks op 1 juli, ter viering van de afschaffing van de slavernij. De naam stamt uit het Sranantongo en betekent Ketenen Gebroken. Ook in Nederland wordt Keti Koti gevierd. Op de (Engelstalige) Bovenwindse eilanden Saba, Sint Eustatius en Sint Maarten wordt deze feestdag Emancipation Day genoemd.

Op 1 juli 1863 schafte het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden met de Emancipatiewet de slavernij af in Suriname en op de Nederlandse Antillen. Er kwamen op dat moment ruim 45.000 oorspronkelijk Afrikaanse slaven vrij, van wie 34.441 slaven in Suriname. De slavenhouders werden voor elke slaaf met 300 gulden schadeloos gesteld, maar de vrijgemaakte mensen kregen zelf niets en werden in Suriname nog tien jaar verplicht op contractbasis het werk te blijven doen.

Sinds 2009 wordt in het Oosterpark in Amsterdam een landelijke herdenking van de slavernij en viering van het einde van de slavernij georganiseerd. In dit park staat sinds 1 juli 2002 het Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden. In 2013 kreeg ook Rotterdam een Slavernijmonument. Het is geplaatst in het Lloydkwartier aan de oever van de Nieuwe Maas, op de plek waar ooit veel slavenhandelaren met hun schip vertrokken richting Afrika. Meerdere steden zijn ondertussen hierin gevolgd. …
