  6. Genetic analyses of ancient skeletons from a megalithic tomb in France reveal a dramatic population collapse during the "Neolithic decline" around 3000 BC, which was subsequently followed by the immigration and genetic replacement by a distinct population from southern Europe.

  9. It turns out it may be better to have (genetically) curly than straight hair (or no hair at all), 👩🏽‍🦱 especially under extreme heat and/or sun exposure - shows a recent study by
    @TinaLasisi
    et al. 🧬
    Tightly curled hair came off best in their experiment than other hair types (bald head, straight hair, moderately curled hair) regarding minimising sweating and overheating.

    I’m a #transdisciplinary human ecologist. Background in #ecologicalagriculture and #biologicalanthropology.

    I work in the stable of #sustainabilitysciences. The purpose of my #humanevolution research is to help solve social and ecological crises.

    Inspired by materialist #ecofeminist lenses. Currently exploring #humanselfdomestication as a social evolutionary process which moderated #maleviolence and dominance competition, allowing increased social #cooperation and complexity.

  14. Refreshing my #humanevolution and #biologicalanthropology knowledge and I found this quote I like enough to share with my fellow #primates: "With chimpanzees, this social grooming takes up more than 16 percent of their time. Aiello and Dunbar established a mathematical law from the behavioural data of contemporary primates and applied it to hominins. They came to the conclusion that Australopithecus spent 20 percent of its time on social grooming; this time then increased to 45 percent for Homo neantherthalensis and Homo sapiens. However, we no longer spend half of our time delousing each other in order to maintain social stability [...]". (from Silvana Condemi and François Savatier, A Pocket History of Human Evolution)

  15. Read the new Monson, Weitz, Brasil, and Hlusko paper in PNAS this morning.
    Demonstrates that prenatal growth rates correlate with endocranial volumes and dental dimensions in extant cercopithecoids, meaning that dental development can be used to estimate hominin prenatal growth rates and neural development. Awesome!
