#268 : Circuit Angel: Resolving Starting Grid
A girl and her motorcycle… in the realms of classic anime I can name a few. Miranda from Venus Wars, Priss from Bubblegum Crisis, Houquet/Rook from Mospeada/Robotech all emerge from my memory and yet, there are more including this one, Mariko Okazaki. Who is that you may ask? She is not a name that many will recognize because she comes from one of those single release OVA titles that you really have to dig down into the more forgotten pile of releases to find. Sounds good to me, so what is the name this release? Why none other than Circuit Angel: Resolving Starting Grid.
Slightly tomboyish, yet also exuding an aura similar to that of a more hot headed Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road, Mariko is a working class girl who has a couple close guy friends that love to tour on their motorbikes. Coming back to KOR again, these friends also resolve around a local cafe/coffee shop but this one is run by ex-racing ace, Raita Nagase, a quiet and slightly mysterious man who is very much a hero to our young protagonists. A question now arises, why did Raita quit racing even though he was so talented and fast? That question does get resolved, but I will let your viewing of this OVA reveal it’s answer 😉
Mariko’s biking shenanegons often times gets her into trouble with her strict yet very protective father who has to eventually take the keys away. Mariko who is also very sneaky and crafty decides to steal them back to join her guy friends for a morning ride in the hills. While out and about on the open road they come into contact with another young man who brings on a rivalry provoking our lady into a race to prove a point. After all this ‘botchan’, pampered rich boy, needs to be shown his place to prove that he can’t always get away with things… plus it will show just how skilled Mariko is on two wheels! Only problem is that she has no racing experience… but there is a way.
Sadly, I have to draw the line here as I don’t want to say much more as this 1987 OVA release is a short one. Anymore detail and I will spoil everything and honestly, that’s no fun. 🙂 For those of you who have a passion for speed, motorcycles, or very obscure titles here is a quick one and done release. Sadly the only transfer seemes to be a VHS rip and even the animation quality looks more closer to a higher budgeted TV episode than the more famous cinematic look of many popular OVA of the 1980s. So don’t expect super glorious production like say a Gunbuster, or Bubblegum Crisis. Yet it holds it’s own very well despite being mostly average but hey… it was a nice find, fun and a simple story. Sometimes thats all you need from an anime, you know?

The NOVBYX E-Bike Ditches Welded Joints for Curved Profiles and Clamps
The NOVBYX e-bike has the most honest frame design I have seen on an electric bike in years. Filip Lacny wrote to WE AND THE COLOR with a simple pitch. He and his father Tadeusz are building an e-bike whose outline comes straight from its construction. I love projects like this. A father and son built a physical prototype around a frame that hides nothing.
Timing matters. The press kit sets the NOVBYX Kickstarter launch for September 2026, so the backing decision arrives about now. I have studied the press kit and the prototype photographs. I have not ridden the bike. This piece therefore judges design and documentation, not ride feel.
NOVBYX, an e-bike whose silhouette comes directly from its construction. What Is the NOVBYX E-Bike, and How Does a Weld-Free Frame Work?
NOVBYX is a pre-production electric bicycle with what its makers call a patented frame architecture. Continuous structural profiles replace the usual set of welded tubes. Precision mechanical interfaces join those profiles. The press kit names the result a “continuous load path.”
A load path is the route a force takes through a structure. On a bike, force travels from the road through the wheels into the frame. From there it reaches your hands and your saddle. NOVBYX tries to smooth that route.
Why Welded Joints Matter
A standard diamond frame is a set of straight tubes that meet at junctions. Those junctions sit at the head tube, the seat tube, the bottom bracket, and the rear dropouts. Welders fuse each one. Heat changes the metal around every weld, and fatigue cracks in metal frames often start in that zone. The press kit marks four such areas in red on its comparison drawing.
How NOVBYX Builds the Frame Without Them
The NOVBYX drawings show long, sweeping elliptical profiles instead of straight tubes. They run from the head tube toward the rear axle and pass the bottom bracket on the way. Clamping interfaces join the pieces. The fork stays a separate part.
The NOVBYX team describes the goal as a radically simplified frame. Fewer structural components mean less assembly work. That claim makes sense on paper. It also shifts the burden to the interfaces, which now carry what the welds used to carry.
Structural Silhouette: Two Terms for What NOVBYX Attempts
I needed a name for this idea, so I coined two. A structural silhouette is an outline that matches the main load path. No cover or fake tube sits between the structure and your eye.
Silhouette debt is the opposite. It builds up when designers hide a conventional frame behind covers and styled shrouds. Every disguise adds parts, and each part needs a reason to exist.
My first thesis says a bicycle earns its silhouette only when removing the outline would remove the structure. Most e-bikes fail that test. Their outline is a costume over a diamond frame.
Other makers took another route. The Faraday Porteur, an early Kickstarter success, tucked its battery cells inside the frame tubing. That design hides the electric part on purpose. NOVBYX shows its structure and hides less, at least in the drawings. It also integrates a 10 Ah battery, and the press kit does not say where that battery sits.
The Honest Frame Test: Four Checks Before You Trust a Bold Shape
Shape alone proves nothing about strength. I use four checks on any frame with an unusual outline. Call it the Honest Frame Test.
- Path. Can you trace the load from the headset to the dropout with one finger? NOVBYX passes on the drawings.
- Joints. How many joints exist, and what kind? The welds are gone, yet every clamp still counts as a joint.
- Service. Can an owner replace a single part? The press kit promises long-term serviceability but shows no parts list.
- Proof. Does a lab report exist? ISO 4210 covers bicycles, and EN 15194 covers electrically power-assisted cycles. NOVBYX shows no results under either yet.
NOVBYX scores well on the first check and unknown on the last. That is a fair place for a pre-production project. It is a poor place for a shipping product.
What the NOVBYX Specs Tell You (and What They Leave Out)
The NOVBYX press kit lists a compact spec sheet. A P160 all-in-one rear hub motor delivers 250 W rated and 400 W peak power. Torque reaches 35 Nm. The 250 W rating matches the continuous power limit for e-bikes in the European Union.
A hub motor also leaves the NOVBYX bottom bracket area clean. That helps a frame built around smooth profiles. Still, 35 Nm is modest. It suits flat cities and gentle commutes. Riders in hilly towns will want more.
The NOVBYX drivetrain is a Shimano CUES U6000 with LINKGLIDE in a 1×10 setup. Shimano Deore M6100 hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping. Shimano positions LINKGLIDE around longer component life. These are sensible, replaceable parts, and they fit a maker who talks about serviceability.
Battery, Range, and Weight
The NOVBYX battery is a 10 Ah integrated lithium pack. The press kit gives no voltage. At 36 V, 10 Ah would equal 360 Wh, but that is my arithmetic, not a claim from the makers. The press kit lists no range figure either. Any range number you read elsewhere lacks a source.
Then comes weight. The NOVBYX target of about 3.0 kg covers the frame profiles, the fork, and the clamping interfaces. It excludes wheels, motor, battery, and components. The press kit never names the frame material, so the number has no benchmark. Filip should publish that detail first.
The Patent Question Behind NOVBYX
The NOVBYX press kit cites European patent document EP 2 944 554 A1, titled “Bicycle with a one-piece bicycle frame.” Two details deserve a question to the team.
First, the suffix A1 marks a published application. Granted European patents carry B1. So “patented” needs a register extract to back it up. Second, the title says “one-piece frame,” while the press kit describes profiles joined by interfaces. Those two ideas sit apart, and I want to see how the claims map onto the prototype.
Curved single-piece frames also have a long paper trail. US patent 4,838,569 already describes a one-piece resilient frame with a generally elliptical shape. The ellipse is old. The novelty here would lie in the profiles, the interfaces, and the e-bike package around them.
NOVBYX Timeline, Price, and the Founders Series
The press kit shows seven stages. NOVBYX finished design and structural validation. Engineering and tooling development. The NOVBYX prototype took shape in 01/2026, and testing and technical validation are active. The kit then sets the Kickstarter launch for 09/2026, serial production for 10/2026, and global parcel shipping for 12/2026. Filip’s email says production and delivery dates remain unconfirmed.
The first 77 bikes form the NOVBYX Founders Series. Each one carries a permanently engraved number from 01 to 77. The website calls this tier the Signature 77 Series. It lists a Kickstarter production price of $2,599 against a $3,499 retail price. Tiers can change, so check the live campaign.
The site also claims 146.8 kg CO₂e for NOVBYX against 192.9 kg for a conventional e-bike. That is a 23.9 percent cut, and the arithmetic checks out. The method behind both figures still needs a look.
Four Predictions for Weld-Free E-Bike Frames
Here is where I expect the weld-free e-bike frame to go.
- A lab report decides everything. If NOVBYX publishes fatigue results under ISO 4210 or EN 15194 procedures, the skeptics go quiet. Without a report, the press will keep asking.
- Small makers copy the method first. Big brands move slowly on new frame architectures. Boutique builders of city e-bikes will test profile-and-clamp designs within two years.
- Serviceability becomes a sales pitch. A frame with replaceable parts speaks to repair-minded buyers. Other brands will copy that message before they copy the shape.
- The December shipping date slips. NOVBYX testing is still active, and the kit sets shipping for 12/2026. I expect first deliveries in 2027.
Who Should Back the NOVBYX E-Bike, and Who Should Wait?
Back NOVBYX if the idea excites you and you accept the risk. A crowdfunding pledge is a good-faith promise, not a purchase. Electrek’s guide to crowdfunded e-bike brands makes the same point and adds that outright failures are rare.
Designers get the most from NOVBYX. The frame offers a clear case study in structure driving form. Collectors of numbered editions have an obvious target in the 77 Founders bikes.
Wait if you need lab data before you pay. Riders in steep cities should also hold off, because 35 Nm is modest. Range buyers have nothing to check either. The press kit lists no range figure at all.
