@smaran I would have loved to see it, but I’m a #theatrenerd in LA. The cast album is brilliant!

Now that I'm happily settled into a server I see myself staying on long-term (Humanities Commons), I thought I would finally write an #introduction.
I'm Smaran Dayal, currently an Assistant Prof. of #Literature at #Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.
I recently got my #PhD in #ComparativeLiterature from #NYU. My PhD dissertation, which I'm now working into a book was a study of literary #Afrofuturism, in particular the novels of #SamuelDelany and #OctaviaButler.
Along with Ulrich Baer, during the first year of the pandemic, I co-edited an anthology of American literature titled Fictions of America: The Book of Firsts.
My primary research interests are #GlobalAnglophone and #AfricanAmerican literature, #postcolonial literary studies, #queertheory and #queerliterature, and, centrally, #sciencefiction studies.
Lovely to (re)connect with you all here!

A Day of Two Teach-Ins: Stevens and NYU #FreedomToLearn gatherings as part of the National Day of Action against the censorship of AP African American Studies, school curricula, and the banning of books across the US (we learned today that there have been some failed initiatives in parts of New Jersey too). @litstudies

Petition against the #tiktok ban. I will say, I actively use TikTok in the college classroom. It’s an important pedagogical tool and as a profession we should oppose this ban. Regulate *all* #socialmedia companies, instead of targeting a single app that has been a vehicle of progressive political education and organizing—and especially because a lot of the rhetoric around the ban stems from American #Sinophobia.

Hey friends. Please read this open letter that I signed onto. It's a collective statement by college and university faculty from across the US who teach African American Studies in defense of the Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies course that was blocked/censored in Florida.

Just a heads up for #LitStudies and #scifi studies people who, like me, end up missing #CfP deadlines.
#ASA 2023 (Montreal) submissions are open all of January.
#MELUS 2023 (Indianapolis) is taking abstracts until January 10th.
#MLA 2024 (Philadelphia): call for papers for seminars can be posted from now through February. And paper abstracts are submitted in March (I believe).
The Utopian Studies Society (#USS) call usually runs through mid-May. Also keeping my eyes open for the NYC #CityTech Science Fiction conference (which I've sadly missed so far) and #ICFA.
I'm taking a time-out from #ACLA. A reproductive rights seminar the year that Roe is repealed is apparently not CompLit enough? Let me hold my peace before I re-litigate long-standing disciplinary gripes.

Is anyone going to #MELUS 2023 in Indianapolis? They'll be marking half a century since the organization's founding. Thinking of sending in an abstract before the Jan 10th deadline. (I'm usually terrified of the Midwestern cold, but the Internet tells me it usually averages around 17C/62F in April.) #LitStudies #Academia #conferences #cfp @litstudies
