As someone who tends to prefer stand alone stories, it has been a long time since I have anticipated the conclusion to a trilogy like this and perhaps the first time I have reserved one in advance.
But Touraine is someone who has captivated me as a character grappling with their identity under colonialism. This reflects both in the realm of empires and on a personal level with Luca. And while that relationship on the surface is characterised by Luca's royal status, it is as true for any interpersonal relationship where you have differing colonial legacies.
This final book deftly brings to a head how Touraine has to choose who she defines herself by the future she builds. Notably, by changing her colonial culture "by making them reckon with her presence". I am also so happy with how it has been resolved. All too often historic fantasies based around monarchies end in a victory for the status quo or a benevolent dictator. Finally here we have a proper, messy, conversation around what real change looks like. Not just as far as the world goes, but how we've seen the monarchy impact Luca and Touraine really shows how there is no just exercise of imperialism.
As conclusions go, for both the individuals and the world, this is perhaps the most thoughtful understanding of power and corruption I've read.
Still here after the colonialism part? Good, so it's also hot. As much as narrative and the worldbuilding is all beautiful; Sabine holds a special place in my heart. I didn't get why people weren't talking about her more after the second book. That charming wine making fencer seducing every girl around her and eyeing up threesomes... she stole my heart. Chapter 15 was... mmmmmm long awaited.

It will make you want to bake a fancy cake and enter it into a competition where all manner of subterfuge is used to win, so that each cake needs the protection of a full pirate crew complement, armed to the teeth and ready to do battle with sneaky cakesmith competitors as well as evil seagulls.

In "The Circus Infinite," Khan Wong creates a rainbow-sparkle interplanetary consortium of worlds that includes 9 species, as well as a sentient star. There are evil scientists and mafiosos dogging our hero Jes's heels, but the focus is on the emotional texture of his experiences. Appropriate, since one of his unusual abilities is empathy--he experiences the emotions of people around him directly. Can Jes find a place for himself after running away from his home planet where his parents despised him and sold him off for scientific experiments? Can an asexual boy find romantic love (he's not aromantic)? How can he get a blackmailing circus landlord off his back and those of his newfound friends? Finding out will be entertaining and touching.
I thought the plot, the setting, and the pacing were all fantastic. The only things that left me scratching my head were elements of worldbuilding, but I let that go pretty quickly. Wong himself is a circus performer, so the depiction of the dynamics of circus life rang especially true. There's enough interesting questions raised by the unusual worldbuilding to allow for a whole universe of sequels. This was Wong's debut novel and I hope he writes more.

Here is my 1/4 of the way through review of #MonaOfTheManor (the new book in the #TalesOfTheCity series) by Armistead Maupin. I will be carefully avoiding spoilers but will be sharing a few things of a more general nature
1. This book is classic Armistead, with lots of twists and turns.
2. The best I can tell, the book I think is set around 1993. This timing is especially important because this is a short time before the widespread availability of the #AIDS cocktail of drugs that began to turn the tide of the epidemic. The book depicts well the terror of these days, but also the fact that #Queer folks kept living their lives with as much dignity and joy as they could muster.
