  1. Faig la meva #Presentació:

    Escric principalment en #Català. ✍️

    Llegeixo #CiènciaFicció i altres gèneres fantàstics. El millor prestatge de casa està reservat a #OctaviaButler, #UrsulaKLeGuin i #SamuelDelany. Pel que fa a l'assaig, m'interessen #Feminismes, #Queer i #Antiespecisme. 👾🦄🐝

Sovint comparteixo articles i estudis sobre afectes no humans: #SintiènciaAnimal.

Quan trec temps pinto #Warhammer i altres miniatures en tons pastel cuquis. 🎨💅

  2. Born this day: 04/01/1942
Samuel Delany is a New Wave SF pioneer who published his first novel at twenty. Winner of four Nebula and two Hugo Awards, his works include Babel-17 and The Einstein Intersection. His dense, ambitious Dhalgren remains one of SF's most debated novels. Named SFWA Grand Master in 2013, he turns 84 today.

  3. @SallyStrange @NerdyNativeMama *Dhalgren* shook me to the core. I'd never read anything even remotely like it. Amazing book.

  4. @bennlich

Nat continues: Had a remarkable experience in grad school with a prof who was reading "Babel 17" while teaching about British 17th century "available" political languages.

I generally recommend "Triton" over other books.

  5. @bennlich

Nat says: Sorry--but I last read "Dhalgren" some 45 years ago & don't remember much. However, around 1994-5 he twisted my arm into reading "The Mad Man." If I remember right it was about a philosophy professor who was into coprophagy, among other things. It was difficult reading, but I learned quite a bit about inhibitions.

  6. CW: May contain offensive language

Had he ever done this before? he wondered. With pen to paper and the actual process occurring, it was as though he had never done anything else. But pause, even moments, and it was as if not only had he never done it, but there was no way to be sure that he ever would again.

  7. Latest read, The Tale of Old Venn (1979) by Samuel Delany, from Tales of Neveryon. In this novella a fishing village girl, Norema, recalls the old, unorthodox woman who told her stories and taught her how to think. It is this experience that carries Norema through hardship & grief.
    Beautiful, anthropological, thoughtful, unconventional.
Delany, like Ursula LeGuin, questions why we live as we do.
    He elevates the genre.

  8. CW: An Introduction

Since I have now moved to the Zirk.us server (after years on the big one), here's a new #Introduction.

I am a writer and college teacher living in the wilds of New Hampshire. I have often been a companion to cats, but am not right now. I am companion to countless books. I write short stories and essays and am told they're sometimes disturbing. I write scholarship on #Queer #Modernism, #VirginiaWoolf, #SamuelDelany, #Horror, #Pedagogy, #OpenEducation, etc. I am skeptical of "I".

  9. Now that I'm happily settled into a server I see myself staying on long-term (Humanities Commons), I thought I would finally write an #introduction.

I'm Smaran Dayal, currently an Assistant Prof. of #Literature at #Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.

I recently got my #PhD in #ComparativeLiterature from #NYU. My PhD dissertation, which I'm now working into a book was a study of literary #Afrofuturism, in particular the novels of #SamuelDelany and #OctaviaButler.

Along with Ulrich Baer, during the first year of the pandemic, I co-edited an anthology of American literature titled Fictions of America: The Book of Firsts.

My primary research interests are #GlobalAnglophone and #AfricanAmerican literature, #postcolonial literary studies, #queertheory and #queerliterature, and, centrally, #sciencefiction studies.

Lovely to (re)connect with you all here!
