  2. CW: Long thread/3

This system is rigid enough, but it gets even worse at the secondary level, especially when combined with the #AdvancedPlacement (#AP) courses, which adds another layer of inflexibile benchmarks to the highest-stakes, most anxiety-provoking classes in the system:

  4. AP Psychology Redux in Florida: in a “no-win” situation, state’s largest #school districts won’t offer the course that touches on restricted material on sex and gender after confusing chain of events. I wonder what’s going to happen to Florida #students when they go to #college. I wonder. #education #AdvancedPlacement #FirstAmendment #academicfreedom

  5. Under an expanded #Florida rule, instruction on #GenderIdentity & #SexualOrientation is now restricted in most cases through 12th grade. The #FloridaDepartmentOfEducation had asked the #CollegeBoard & other providers of advanced, college-level courses to search their offerings for potential violations.

But the College Board said that it would not modify its content, & that any course that did not address gender & sexual orientation should not be labeled “#AdvancedPlacement.”

  6. Supplicants to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis no longer: the #CollegeBoard announces it will revise the #AdvancedPlacement #AP course in African-American history. The board had tried to make the class more palatable to critics like DeSantis but faced the ire of scholars. #education nytimes.com/2023/04/24/us/ap-a

  7. While written in couched terms, the #CollegeBoard’s statement appeared to acknowledge that in its quest to offer the course to as many students as possible — including those in conservative states — it watered down key concepts.

  8. The #CollegeBoard said on Mon that it would revise its #AP African American studies course, < 3 mos after releasing it to a barrage of criticism from scholars, who accused the board of omitting key concepts & bending to political pressure from Gov Ron #DeSantis, who had said he would not approve the curriculum in FL.

  10. Is there any published list of the literature that was dropped by the College Board from the Advanced Placement African American Studies curriculum? I would like to get ahold of that literature and read it.

  11. I don’t agree with John McWhorter. An #AdvancedPlacement #AP course is supposed to offer college level work for college credit. Surely critical race theory, reparations would come up in a college level course. I taught African American lit at the college level (sophomore) and discussions on police brutality, what amounts to CRT and intersectionality happened. nytimes.com/2023/02/16/opinion

  12. Here’s Linguistics Professor and New York Times columnist John McWhorter’s take on the #AP #AdvancedPlacement African American studies course; he sees reason to omit critical race theory, reparations, other fraught words and topics. #education nytimes.com/2023/02/16/opinion

  14. Haven’t seen or read the course materials, but have read the #news that there is critical race theory in #AdvancedPlacement African American class, so 4 more states are joining Florida to make sure the class is copacetic. #education #FirstAmendment #academicfreedom #facts #reality

  16. The expunged writers and scholars include Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a law professor at Columbia, which touts her work as “foundational in critical race theory”; Roderick Ferguson, a Yale professor who has written about queer social movements; and Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author who has made the case for reparations for slavery. Gone, too, is bell hooks, the writer who shaped discussions about race, feminism and class.

  18. Karen Attiah: Florida is offering an advanced lesson in anti-Blackness

"There’s that saying that goes, 'White privilege is when your history is the core curriculum, and mine is an elective.' Well, to Florida and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), Black history isn’t even worthy of that bare minimum."

"This day and age, it ought to be no question that African American studies deserves AP treatment. It’s crucial for all students to have access to this history and this knowledge and for scholars in the field to have an opportunity to reach younger generations."
