Now that I'm happily settled into a server I see myself staying on long-term (Humanities Commons), I thought I would finally write an #introduction.

I'm Smaran Dayal, currently an Assistant Prof. of #Literature at #Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey.

I recently got my #PhD in #ComparativeLiterature from #NYU. My PhD dissertation, which I'm now working into a book was a study of literary #Afrofuturism, in particular the novels of #SamuelDelany and #OctaviaButler.

Along with Ulrich Baer, during the first year of the pandemic, I co-edited an anthology of American literature titled Fictions of America: The Book of Firsts.

My primary research interests are #GlobalAnglophone and #AfricanAmerican literature, #postcolonial literary studies, #queertheory and #queerliterature, and, centrally, #sciencefiction studies.

So, I like #litaphants, don’t get me wrong. But I think we should follow the pattern of the other disciplines. There’s #histodons, #astrodons, etc. I suggest Literary Studies use #litodons going forward. It follows the format others are using and makes sense. #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #LitStudies
