  1. There’s a fun effect of playing a conference bingo over several days: people adjust their slides to allow participants to tick boxes

Which also means: our conference bingo is a friendly one, well designed, and absolutely tailored to the community

Oh, yes, I did design it :)

  3. We'll have an international conference (#WritingResearch: people from linguistics, pedagogy, psychology, etc.) and want to set up a conference bingo. What should that include?

    What I have so far:
    - Are the speakers for paper two in the room?
    - I'll skip the next slide(s)
    - It's more a comment than a question

Actually, we want to have two: one for participants, one for organizers. Oh, and do you have suggestions for prizes?

  7. Working on research about a real-life serial killer that is the antagonist in a story I'm working on (and yes, I knew him personally and helped to bring him to justice). Unfortunately, the last leads I had on the other murders lost their sources, and I could only find one lead which was behind a paywall. I actually contacted the murderer's offspring a few years ago (who had information about the other murders), but they have dropped off the map. So, I decided to create a public family tree for the killer, since in the fictional version, the killer's ancestors have a part to play in his actions (and perhaps IRL as well!). I figure it's a longshot, but who knows. Maybe the offspring is on Ancestry and that would certainly be a way to get their attention!

  13. Originally, I argued to skip the «book of abstract» for SIG Writing 26. And maybe, creating one will acually be the best part in organizing it as I hopefully can do it with a fellow document engineer with a proper XML–XSLT–XSLT-FO–HTML–ePub pipeline! Maybe even LaTeX, who knows

Or the second best thing after printing stickers :)

  15. #NewPaper out on visualization of writing process data: “Designing Visual Tools for Writing Process Analysis” for #DocEng25. I developed new visualization models to capture both process and product of text production, suitable for qualitative exploration for both authors and researchers.

  18. A somewhat different topic for me… I’m happy to announce the publication of the article “Sentence-centric modeling of the writing process” in the Journal of Writing Research, co-authored with @CerstinMahlow and Małgorzata Anna Ułasik:

  20. I now saw several talks addressing creativity when „writing“ with LLMs, either as main topic or a contributing one. All fail (or imply refuse) to define or operationalize „creativity.“ They mainly retreat to human annotation/assessment by applying „Humans know it when they see it.“ Which, hm, never mind

  22. Reviews are in for the second journal paper of my doctoral student (co-authored by supervisors). Looks like “minor revisions” + “could you shorten the paper? like, 20%?”

Should be doable in three hours? No big deal, sure, we can meet the short deadline even with the doctoral student on vacation.

And here we are, 35 working hours into heavy revisions and discussions: the supervisors are about to fork the paper! And then onto the next round of revisions!

  28. I'm very happy to announce that my PhD student Anna (co-supervisor: @CerstinMahlow) has published her first first-author paper (open access):

  30. Just out “Automated Extraction and Analysis of Sentences under Production: A Theoretical Framework and Its Evaluation” (Małgorzata Anna Ułasik & Aleksandra Miletíc)

A very nice paper on the role of sentences in writing & how to research the process of sentence production

    * I might be biased as Anna is doing her PhD with me and @mxp

** Yes, I know, MDPI etc., but please read it, the ideas on sentences in writing have potential to significantly advance #WritingResearch

  34. Today's #WritingResearch fun was actually critiquing fun--looking up non-anachronistic words for the act of blowing on a baby's belly to make a buzzing noise. Apparently zerbert is from the Bill Cosby show?!?

“Blowing a raspberry” is from the early 1900s. But just "raspberry" meaning "a rude sound" (from 1890) is a shortening of raspberry tart, rhyming slang for fart. I learned so much!

  36. In today's #WritingResearch rabbit holes, I found a bizarre Thai Dentyne Ice commercial. How did I end up here? By searching for whether squid have eyelids! (Answer: depends on the squid.)

  38. Do you know what's impossible to find? Solid data on the percentage of people who've given birth have long-term physical side effects from it over a year later. Even info on specific conditions is hard to find. Post-partum depression, sure! A simple overall percentage of physical damage? Nope!

I want a meta-study, damn it. This is just for ONE throwaway line in my book, but I want accurate data. Harrumph.

  40. So someone on Mastodon posted this link to an scholarly article about research into writing on wax: jstor.org/stable/10.1163/j.ctv

Which I finally got around to reading today (both #WritingResearch and general interest).

And they got an expert to inscribe cuneiform on one of their wax paste formulations to show what a new writing board might have looked like.

And they snuck the translation into the footnotes.

    And it’s a sex poem.

    Wind blow, orchard shake,
    Clouds gather, droplets fall!
Let my potency be steady as running river water,
Let my penis be a taut harpstring,
Let it not slip out of her!

Nothing like a Mesopotamian anti-impotency incantation to start the day right. Though one’s penis being a harpstring is not quite the flex it once was, perhaps.

  41. Writing Research question for people in Sao Paulo, Brazil:

I'm writing a scene where my characters move through Sao Paulo, walking or public transport or rideshare/uber. They don't have their own car. Late afternoon in summer.

    1) their destination is an office building which is being used by a (fictional) animation studio. Where in Sao Paulo might such a business be?

    2) without being too on the nose or stereotyped, what sights, smells, sounds etc might they encounter on their journey? Weather? Clothing? Music?

Particularly interested in details about traffic, pedestrian experience as some of my characters are cyclists so would notice cars from that point of view. (As in, they aren't actually on bicycles, but have a cyclist's mindset)
