Most likely not. The only think I ever wrote that was Halloweenish in nature was a peom called, "Old Twelve Toes". A peom about a cat with twelve toes on a halloween night walking a brick wall. I don't think I ever had a digital version of it. So it is long lost to time and past halloweens.

Generally it's been on falloff. The site where I used to post, I could see views on each post, meaning I'd know that 100 people saw the first post in the serial, yet only 5 people saw the last one, for instance. (After allowing viewing time, natch.) I'm not on there any more, and it was probably a bad metric.

The other way is number of votes-for-plot on the weekly serial. Also lousy. I should base it on whether it makes me want a sequel.

By keeping up the writing momentum, then by completing milestones or works. When current work reads better than previous ones, it's heartening.

I don't gain satisfaction from creating. I could place everything in my closet if that were true. I gain it more from the sharing, from feeling like I've made someone else think, progress, or simply made their life more enjoyable.

Social media has both made this easier, and more lonely and terrible. As I said on #WebAuthorsCafe, by most metrics, I see myself as a failure. Maybe if people engaged with my work offline, I'd feel different? Maybe.

Very badly. By most metrics, I see myself as a failure. Because I wanted to progress, and after 10 years, still couldn't get six votes on my serials. I had to give up personified math, no one seemed to care. Even had to shut down my website. Did anyone notice? The work could be in my closet.

And yet, I posted regular updates. I was accepted by an anthology community. I've had guest posts. I should probably focus on that.

#WebAuthorsCafe 5: Do you write in serial format? Why or why not?

There are two types of serial format (spelled with an s not a c): 1. Dickensian and 2. Safe.

1) By Dickensian, I am referring to good old Charles Dickens who published his stories in weekly installments in newspapers (think of it as a web page that refreshed weekly). He would write new chapters each week. They turned often verbose and flowery, but he got paid by installment and in the end his stories were well loved and he became an international celebrity.

The downside, he died and left a novel unfinished. Okay, I'm not going to look up if The Mystery of Edwin Drood was serialized, but that's the concept anyway: Writing a story chapter by chapter, not knowing if you'll ever finish it.

I did that twice, and for me it was crazy making, if fulfilling. Having to finish a chapter done on time and when promised was hard when I did it in fan fiction. I even had to add author notes because I had modify previous chapters to make the story work.

I did it again with Mars Needed Women, an original science fiction work inspired by current dystopian events. I initially serialized it in a different form on Mastodon†. That, however, was 31 chapters in 31 days based on 31 feminist #writever prompts, for an entire month, day by day, composition and revision and publication done each day, with barely a vague idea how it would end. Grueling. Doing and succeeding at such things builds writer muscles.

2) Safe serialization is where you've completed the story composition before you start serializing chapters, or better yet simply serialized a finished work, which is how it is done in magazines today. It is definitely safer than going the full Dickens. I did this for years while writing fan fiction, trailing the revisions, and rarely having to change published chapters to add foreshadowing or corrections. It had the advantage of not being so hectic. Mind you, I didn't publish them as regularly; it makes for better quality output. Better for the nerves, too!

#WebAuthorsCafe 4: Do you prefer fanfiction or original work? Why or why not?

In the niche that I wrote, I have read some amazing work, fully worthy in texture and content, of being conventionally published but for the encumbering IP. One I nevertheless nominated for an Otherwise Award (https://otherwiseaward.org/), which is for #gender #fiction. I read original work more and more these days.

As for writing, there was a time for me to write fan fiction. I needed it to rehabilitate myself, to get used to writing stories with out all the bad feelings that accompanies having burnt out as a professional author. It also served as a sandbox where I could practice and later perfect writing in 1st person. I had known in my heart (and one of the reasons I burnt out) that I could not write 3rd person as well as I needed to, that 3rd person lacked the ability to snark (a.k.a, be opinionated as a narrator and observer of humanity) which many of my characters needed to be able to do.

I prefer writing original work now. It's me. I'm fully responsible for my ideas, world, and characters—it's freedom.

I think I'll refer to my fan fiction past here. I totally did not buy the characterization of the fantasy series' MacGuffin character. I saw the character as a closet antagonist, something I borne out in the very first episodes, then later near the end of the series. It inspired me to write a story about an immortal that could survive centuries and not lose their mind. I am writing a much improved character in my current work.

Germaine to this question, I wrote her origin story as a teenager in a very patriarchal society, where to leave the house she had to be covered except for her eyes and nose. I gave her a twin autistic brother. Women were chattel, not taught to read, but because of her brother and his magical talent, her love for him and her family, she taught herself to read, so she could teach him, and in turn he taught her magic. She thought he was the talented one, but a certain man realized it was her talent that could change the world and schemed to own it and enslave her.

Were I to pick my best story, I'd hesitate to pick that one, though it came out very well. Why I summarized it was that it was my most heavily read and critically received story. I got interviewed having written it, and included in a list of must read stories. It also got heavily read when originally published. It was serialized in chapters and did well, unlike others of my stories that built readership over time. I wrote a three-chapter sequel. I do like it a lot, and it allowed me to create a character who is both good and evil, both principled and ruthless, both very kind and exceptionally cold. Living forever is both a gift and a curse.

I won't add a link, for the reason that I am adapting it to my own universe and characters. I've mentioned the character enough in my posts that you could probably deduce which one is the adaptation. If you deduce my alias, please keep it to yourself.

I'm a published SF and fantasy author who burnt out in 2001 and returned to storytelling using the excuse that fan fiction wasn't real writing—you can't sell it—so I could let go of the fear and angst that had stopped me before. Spoiler: It is real writing. It is also wonderful practice.

I began posting online in 2015. I started by writing stories that continued certain series episodes, extending it where the show lacked depth, but later created original characters and situations that went far beyond the scope of the original material, or would have been flatly incompatible. I specialized in radical backstories and histories that if you squinted properly, might evolve into the rather sketchy characters in the show—sometimes squinting through a microscope.

Since then I've been adapting my characters and plot lines to conventional F&SF stories, and extending those otherwise constrained restrained characters into my own original universe, creating stories that highlight my fervor for telling #gender related and #feminist stories.

When I considered this hashtag in the beginning, I forgot that I do still publish quite often online, now only on Mastodon. Writing short scenes that are satisfyingly complete by themselves was a revelation that occurred only after I started on this site. I'll direct you to two short tootfics (I have a 5,000 character limit, so I by this I mean approximately 750 words). These are not as polished as they could be, but I think they highlight my characters, stories, emotional content, and humor. Both are in the Reluctance Series #RSReluctanceStory. Surprisingly (for me), it turns out I pinned both story posts, so I guess I think they're pretty good. Many of my better samples can be for in my pinned sample story link post; one of these days I have to add my newer stuff to that list…

Not seriously. I sent out a few short stories, but always trended more to blog posts, longer serials or comics. Figuring out traditional publishing wasn't a priority.

Then the "Time Travel Authors" collective decided to publish an anthology. I did have those short stories to update... and that's how I got published, thrice, with more experienced others doing lots of the anthology heavy lifting. Luck, and timing.

When I first began, there was no web and I let some school friends read my stuff. It went down fairly well, though idk if any of them were very into it. A few of us were Star Trek fans, and wrote and performed a skit. Did one at summer camp and later at a weekend away when I was at university. Those were fun and I’d forgotten them until just now. Those weren’t also Star Trek btw.

The past two months I've been editing back through about 300k words of "Time Untied", and now have a sense of where to go, after being unsure about that for 18 months. Yaay. The original "Time & Tied" continues to go up on AO3.

“Time & Tied” takes time to process. And though I wasn’t releasing episodes right away, I was thinking along those lines. With side stories I never told. So? Does it fit the definition?

Meanwhile, I do write in serial format (for “Epsilon”) where I release episodes in parts and instalments (of readable length). Also there is an arc or order to events, yet with the flexibility for continuations beyond what I have written. How do you see it? Thoughts? Let me know. (6/6)

Is “Time & Tied” a serial? There is foreshadowing, and in the end, everything does hook back in. It could be binge read.

However, it comprises 340,000 words and over 10 different points of view. (Don’t worry, I broke it down into four self-contained segments, each only 85k words, each of those being 48 parts.) That's on the scope of “Babylon 5”. Characters evolve similarly. Thus, serial? (5/6)

Thus “Epsilon” as a novel might not work, head hopping and having (for instance) a romance subplot getting the focus for a couple entries before returning to the “main” plot.

Bringing us to “Time & Tied”, the most dodgy of my serials in terms of the definition. Written in advance, with an MC of sorts, but always with the thought that I would later break it up into parts. Many parts seemingly having nothing to do with the MC (or her plot) at all. (4/6)

I think @NaraMoore had it right when they said a serial is meant to be read in installments. With the possible addition that it reads *better* that way, versus binge reading the whole thing, as in a novel.

Very often my next “Epsilon” part shifts point of view. Partly helps reiterate recent events, but also means there’s a more ensemble cast without a clear MC. Leading to more of that universe feel, versus a single plot. (3/6)

I think at its core, a serial involves an existing universe where short stories could take place. (YMMV) Consider, even Holmes started as a novel before he hit the big time with serialized cases.

This means my “Epsilon Project” qualifies. However, within that serial universe, each story itself comprises about 15 installments. A serial within a serial? (Yo dawg, I heard you like serials so...) Or is it releasing a novel chapter by chapter - on the fly? (2/6)

Yes. And no. There’s a lot to unpack.

The main reason I write this way is I grew up with shows like “Babylon 5” and “Quantum Leap”. Self contained episodes having a different event or character focus. Yet B5 is *serialized*, as there is an arc or order, while QL is *series* based, you can scramble entries and it still makes sense.

Why yes, I do. I started it because it gave me immediate feedback and manageable deadlines. The first worked as long as I was a major player in a fandom, but not since. Deadlines still work. Write a whole novel, too big a project for me. Turn out a chapter a week, that I can do.

Now it habit, Serials are what I am used to. It is also the conventional long-form format where I publish. And the only way to do long-form publishing on the Fedi.

#WebAuthorsCafe Wk Aug 11: Prefer fanfiction or original work?

Twenty-five years ago I preferred fanfiction. It was great, no world building involved (I dislike doing that) and you already have people searching for it.

The past ten years, I've preferred original works. Most of my knowledge is out of date, and I don't have time to upgrade it to recent works. Urban fantasy lets me dodge around (most) world building, and I avoid upsetting anyone should I write against canon.

If you read online serial fiction, how many episodes is the max, you are comfortable with for short pieces. (Under 2K words.) In some instances on the Fedi, allow up to 3K characters. Which is min. of 3 EP per 1K words.

My flagship is whatever major thing I am working on. I hope everything I write is an improvement on the last.

I could go with my erotic story, which is my most popular, but it’s not my best. But it’s reasonable erotica (porn with plot) and wouldn’t interest pure wankers since there is lots of plot. "My Girlfriend Almost Got Me Killed, so We Had Wild Sex."

My flagship, though, is "For Love of a Konbini idol.", the story of a woman who falls in love with a toxic and cursed idol. Shiomi. I am publishing the fourth and concluding volume now. Where hopefully, Ume and her polycule finally defeat Shiomi’s dead lover Mikawa, a woman so possessive she comes back from the grave to claim Shiomi.

I posted 17 things to #PIXIV
9 posts to #AO3 (They count things differently, and more stuff is going to PIXIV at the moment because of contests.
Another dozen or so Fedi-only flash fiction and drabbles.

Most proud, I finished the plague arc in my main WIP and have moved on to the closing arc. It will be some time before it is posted.
