Only darkness and silence, except for the tap, tap, tap of Elderkin's held hands. A slow conversation passed from one to the next. A rhythm that kept the emptiness at bay. They shared memories from when there were suns, planets, and even further back, to when life existed. Memories of hunting warm blood and the promise of eternal life.
Now, only the perpetually tormented by a hunger that could no longer be fed remained, along with the tap, tap, tap.
Tap, tap, tap. The Founder said Myrien had uttered rebellion.
Hands let go.
Myrien spun off into entropy's eternal stasis.

His eyes focused on the decaying Victorian on the hill. Mother would be so proud of his cleverness.
She had been so upset when the sheriff came by to ask questions about the abandoned car on Ashcreek Lane. Her shrill voice—a searing, shrieking wind, orphaned sparrows #piping under eaves, and the whistle of a willow cane—blew the crystal away.
But he was cleverer now. His eyes followed the bubbles emerging from the muddy bog, and with them, a full smile welled.

#Wss366 #DrabbleTober #Spooktober“If you hide in the library until after it closes, you’ll hear a #piping: 'Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!'” Kaeru-chan said. It was her contribution to the spooky stories they were exchanging.
No one knew who’d invited her to their party. She smelled of day-old fish, and her face was wrong: pale with round, bulging eyes. Rumors said she had webbed toes.
“They say they're played by worshipers of ancient Nyarlathotep. If you follow the sound to the fourth aisle, you can see them, but you'll never return.”
“How would you know?” a girl asked.
Kaeru just smiled with her round, puckered mouth.

The devil calmly examined the four students standing outside the pentagram. The #triangular lenses of his glasses reflected their astonished faces.
"I told you this was better than 'Hide and Go Seek by Yourself,'" the leader said.
The boy next to him shyly looked at the girl to his left. "I still would have preferred going to that ghost spot."
The fourth boy finally spoke up. "Who would have believed this would work in Japan? It's so much cooler than Kokkuri-san and easier than Hyaku Monogatari.”
"So, how can I help you?" the devil said in perfect Japanese. He didn’t seem very interested and was looking at his solid gold pocket watch, not the students. “It’s been a while since I could visit your fair land. There are some people I would like to visit while I’m here, so do hurry.”
"Oh, nothing," the leader said. "We're just doing a test of courage. We don't really want to sell our souls."
The devil smiled #amiably. "So funny. I don’t buy souls. Summoning me is enough. Did you really think the foreign Kami would forgive this act of blasphemy?"
He laughed as the shadows crept in.

“Wow. Why our backyard?”
“No one can see me digging. I’ll plant hydrangeas in it when I’m done.”
“Ten feet is awful deep.”
“I wouldn’t want anything sticking out the top. Except for the hydrangeas. Ha, ha. And before you ask why hydrangeas, they were on sale at Sky Nursery.”
“I don’t get it. Why here? Why so deep, and why square?”

“Are you Japonica or Americana or maybe Fuliginosa?” asked the Silverfish. “You’re big enough to be Surinamensis.”
“Pardon,” I said. “I’m Gregor Samsa.”
“With that accent, definitely Germanica.”
“Hello, Gegor Blattella.”
“No, Samsa.”
“Sorry, Samusu-san.”
This was a confusing conversation. “What are talking about?” I asked.
“If you climb the dresser, you can see in the mirror.” The silverfish said, waving its antenna at a tall brown pole.
“I can’t climb that!”
“Try.”
It was easier than it looked and once on top, I looked in the mirror.
“I’m a cockroach!”
“Germanica,” the silverfish added.
“Haven’t you read ‘The Metamorphosis.’”

百物語 Hyaku Monogatari – 6 - (10/06/2023)
I follow idols on IG and was flipping through a fav idol’s images. First, OOTD pics. Then, gritter ones. Finally, a movie showing an unknown person’s photo being set on fire, Then dropped into a bucket of cigarette buttes. Followed by three more.
I sometimes see ghosts, but generally just feel their sadness. This was different, an actual curse. I watched again, then realized I shouldn’t. I’d become part of it. As each photo burned I thought, “Shine, Shine, Shine.” I didn’t want the person to die. It was automatic. I wonder how many people added energy to that curse.

There’s a door. It is never where you look, but if you look long enough, you’ll find it. Those who go through it never return and soon all traces of them is erased: records, photos, written references, even memories. Those that tell you what is behind the door are lying. No one returns. I have cleverly kept a record of those that have found it. All that remains are blank entries. The absence of records is the proof they existed. If you wish for nothing, truly nothing, the void, absence, silence, you can find it.

百物語 Hyaku Monogatari – 4 - (10/04/2023)
It crawled onto the rocks, tentacles pulling it forward, slime easing its path.
The cliffs kept the deadly sun off and sea spray kept it moist.
A barrier of deadly air kept predators away.
Wind whistled over its gills, fanning proto-lungs, making a thin shrill piping noise. To the distant ear, it sounded like, “Tekeli-li! Teke-li!”
Dipping tentacles into the surging sea, it scooped out fat fish that went into its beaked mouth. Seagulls that thought it easy prey met a similar violent end.
Till the fishers came with nets and spears, saying, “We know how to deal with monsters.”

Yue: “Look, it’s a face in the frost.”
Sister: “Let me see. Let me see! Wow, it is.”
Father stood at the door, holding his head. “Keep it down. I don’t feel good.”
Yue: “It looks just like mom.”
Sister: “It does. It does. It’s mom!”
Dad: “Don’t say her name. That bitch left us. She is gone.” He winced, his fist hitting the door.
Yue: “No, it’s mom! She’s saying something.”
Dad: “Shut up you will join her!”
The two staring intently at the Jack Frost, ignored the threat.
Yue: “She says, the freezer.”
Sister: “Let’s go look.”

She had come. In the hills, the full moon shone silver, and the chosen heard her tremulous horn. The butcher’s apprentice, “divorced” woman, and outcast “witch”, raised their heads. Madame Defarge looked up from her knitting. The Jacquerie and Mau Mau listened. The pariah, the scorned, the forgotten, all heard and knew. She had come, the dark messiah their dreams had foretold. Soon all would know her name. Come fire, famine, and blood, they would be heard. Though the gallows and gibbet would be their reward, they would follow her. Hammer, maul, scythe, and sickle. She had come, their mistress.

She came like a night mist, dew on the counterpane. I left my window open for just that reason. Evelyn, my girlfriend, lover, and wife. A year ago, a fever had laid everyone in the village out, and had entered the castle like a thief stealing my health. When I recovered, the doctor informed me Evelyn had “departed.” Such “sensitive” phrasing. Liar, I’d seen her. At night, I would see her in the fog by our lake. I heard her voice mingled with the sound of night swallows. On the floor laid scattered garlic, as she had asked. My Evelyn.
