In July of 1946, on assignment for Fortune magazine, photographer Walker Evans spent an afternoon at a downtown Detroit intersection, shooting passersby with his camera held at waist level. The spread was titled “Labor Anonymous” in Fortune’s “Labor in U.S. Industry”. The collection of unposed images have since been released in a 2016 photography book.
