The Milky Way over Valles Caldera — where darkness brings out the quiet beauty of New Mexico’s night sky. What’s the most unforgettable sky you’ve seen?

The Milky Way glows over Valles Caldera, with pine silhouettes standing watch under a sky full of stars.
Can you see the Milky Way near where you live?

Went to a night hike of the Valles Caldera National Monument three nights ago in hopes of seeing some of the Perseids Meteor Shower. The rangers were great and the caldera is fascinating. Pro tip, though: Don’t expect to see meteors during a full moon. #newmexico #nationalparks #vallescaldera

The Milky Way over Valles Caldera, New Mexico — just beginning to emerge as night falls. No tracker, just a peaceful single exposure under some of the best skies in the Southwest.

Black and white film-style look at an old wooden structure near Sulphur Springs, along the edge of Valles Caldera. Built during the region’s ranching days, it now stands alone in a geothermal landscape.

This is the Commissary Cabin at Valles Caldera’s historic Cabin District. Weathered, worn, and full of untold stories.
Follow for more images of places that speak softly but last, and share this with a fellow history buff.

This log cabin sits alone in the Valles Caldera in New Mexico — built as a set for The Missing (2003), directed by Ron Howard.
The film is gone, but the set remains, slowly weathering into the landscape like it was always meant to be there.#VallesCaldera #NewMexico #WesternFilm #MovieSet #FilmHistory #AbandonedStructures #Photography #Fediverse

View driving to and standing in the Caldera this morning for the second “Instant Film Photography Program” run by NPS. Cleared up enough by the time we were walking, though looks like some of the film might've fallen victim to the cold.
Scheduled to be a monthly event, including in the winter when they'll offer snowshoes: https://www.nps.gov/vall/planyourvisit/ranger-led-activities.htm

Guy in the parking lot at Valles Caldera, after hearing I’m semi-local: “You come here often, then?”
Me, having a realization: “Not nearly often enough.”

While the Yellowstone Caldera gets all the public attention, an older and smaller caldera in New Mexico also has an important story to tell. In fact, the Valles Caldera is where scientists first sorted out the workings of volcanic systems that produce large explosive eruptions that make calderas.

Planned pile burn projects are located within the park on South Mountain (980 acres), San Antonio Mountain (1,400 acres), Cerro San Luis (670 acres), Cerro Pinon (69 acres) and will take place between now and spring.
#Smoke from these burns to be visible from all directions coming into the Jemez Mountains, Jemez Springs, Jemez Pueblo and Los Alamos.
Smoke may linger for a few days after each burn.
