I didn’t think Gemini could do this — 10 useful features hiding in plain sight

    Features

By Amanda Caswell, published yesterday (January 15, 2026)

I test AI tools for a living, but even I missed how much Gemini can do — especially when it’s connected to your Google apps

    Follow us, Newsletter

I test, review and use AI every day — and I still underestimated Google Gemini. Once it’s connected to your Google ecosystem, Gemini starts behaving less like a chatbot and more like a low-key personal analyst.

However, some of its most useful features aren’t clearly labeled or promoted. You usually stumble into them. Here are 10 Gemini features hiding in plain sight that most people don’t realize they already have access to.

    1. Gemini behaves differently depending on where you use it

One of the most overlooked things about Gemini is that it isn’t a single, fixed assistant. The way it behaves changes depending on where you’re using it. You may like

For example, Gemini works differently when it’s accessed:

    • On the web
    • On Android
    • Inside Google apps like Gmail or Docs

This means, you can type the exact same prompt in each place and get noticeably different responses. That’s because Gemini adapts to the product or device on which it’s used — including the context, tools and data available in that environment.

    2. Gemini connects dots across your data — not just retrieves it

Most people assume Gemini simply pulls information when you ask a question. In reality, it can reason across multiple sources at once.

    That means it can:

    • Connect an email thread to a calendar event
    • Reference something you searched after watching a YouTube video
    • Tie together photos, emails and searches into a single insight

To see what I mean, try this prompt: “Based on my emails and calendar, what are the main things competing for my attention this week?” You may like

You’ll notice right away that Gemini doesn’t simply search, it actually puts the pieces together for you.

    3. It adapts to how you work (without asking)

Even without a visible “memory” setting, I noticed Gemini quietly adapting to how I use it. Whether it’s responding to emails in my tone (I use more exclamation marks than I like to admit — and Gemini includes them!). It’s been a game changer for me; over time, it learned:

    • Whether I prefer lists or paragraphs
    • How much detail I usually want
    • The tone I respond to best

As a chatbot, I’ve seen the responses feel noticeably more tailored. It’s subtle — but once you notice it, it’s hard to unsee.

Google brought out all the stops to deliver Gemini 3 this year, its most intelligent model thus far. And the internet is genuinely impressed by the flood of new features.

Google’s aim was simple to describe, yet harder to execute: to allow you to bring any of your ideas to life. We’ll dive into what’s new for Gemini users, and you can later judge for yourself whether that mission was a success. A mini spoiler for the impatient: Gemini 3 is already beating ChatGPT in key benchmarks.

So far, we’ve seen Gemini 3 deliver answers in interactive visual layouts, search using what your camera is pointing at in real-time, and create stunning infographics (yes, with text you can actually read). The news gets even better if you’re a student in a US college, as you could be eligible for a free full-year subscription to Gemini AI Pro. You may like

As Google Search continues pursuing its AI-first path, you can now access Gemini 3 through Google’s home page using AI search.

In two simple steps, you can flick on AI mode and Gemini’s answer skips the list of links synonymous with Google Search and instead gives you the answer to your question directly. Although a short list of sources is still included for the curious.

Whether you’re interested in knowing the perfect way to bake salmon or to compare prices of the latest iPhone, Google’s AI search mode delivers the results you’re seeking within the same chat dialogue.

Expect your search results to be smarter and more personalised as Gemini 3 blends in the input from multiple sources to create a single, coherent response. Better AI Overviews at the top of your search results are also heading your way.

Claude Opus 4.5 is a major improvement

The world of AI is fiercely competitive. Each year, the main companies go back and forth, all trying to take the top spot as the best and most innovative company, topping leaderboards and becoming the go-to choice of the world.

However, while there is a long list of options to choose from, three have been fighting it out for the top spot. These are OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Claude from Anthropic, and Google’s very own Gemini. With its most recent update, Anthropic might have just become the leading choice in a number of ways. Here’s why.

    Coding

Ever since AI chatbots began allowing vibe coding (the ability to write code via prompts), Anthropic has been a leader in the field. Since then, this has become a major focus for the company, pushing noticeable improvements in this area with each iteration.

When it came to the launch of Claude Opus 4.5, this was no different. In Anthropic’s own testing, Opus 4.5 outperformed both Gemini 3 Pro and GPT-5.1 Pro.

This is not to say that its competitors are worse models overall. Gemini 3 has outperformed Claude in its understanding of graduate-level challenges, as well as writing tasks.

However, for Anthropic, this newest model is aimed at being good enough at coding to outperform a human.

I love Google Maps, but it sucks for hiking — here’s the app I use to avoid getting lost in the woods

Opinion, By Tom Pritchard published 2 days ago

OpenStreetMap is free, and much better at mapping trails than Google

    Comments (3)

I use Google Maps a lot, even when I don’t actually need it. There’s so much on offer in Google’s navigation app, and so far I haven’t been able to find an alternative that doesn’t infuriate me when out on the road. But Google Maps is far from perfect, and as good as it is on the road, I’ve found it’s absolutely useless off it.

I have two Labradors who need a lot of exercise and love to explore new areas. So I tend to do a lot of hiking and rambling through the nearby countryside to tire them out. Finding new footpaths and trails with Google Maps is a pretty miserable experience, because it has next to no information about them. So I’ve found a useful (and free) alternative in the form of Open Street Map.

Google Maps needs more hiking trails

The first thing I should mention is that I know Apple Maps launched its own hiking features last year, alongside iOS 18. But I’m primarily an Android user, and switching to an iPhone just to go hiking would be a huge pain in my proverbial neck. Unfortunately, that is one feature Google Maps doesn’t have, and hasn’t yet copied, which is finding new trails quite difficult.

My reasoning is because I have been concerned for a long time about Discord's business practices. They are trying to jam in ads and monetization wherever they can. Not only is the software proprietary, it is essentially spyware.

  21. I use ChatGPT every day — here are 9 new prompts I can’t live without | Tom’s Guide

    1. Getting motivated

Prompt: “Plan my day based on my current mood, energy level and how much time I have.”

Some days I feel like a creative genius. Other days, particularly on the weekends when my schedule is a little more flexible, I feel less motivated and a little more aimless. I use this prompt by filling in the important details when I feel lost or overwhelmed.

ChatGPT acts like a personal life coach based on my mood; suggesting meals, breaks, tasks and fun based on whether I have 30 minutes or a whole free afternoon. It’s surprisingly grounding.

    2. Getting ideas off the ground

Prompt: “Turn this vague idea into a list of what to do next, then sort it by impact vs. effort”

Sometimes when I have so many ideas circling in my head, ChatGPT is useful for getting unstuck. Maybe you know that feeling when you’re thinking, “I know what I want, but I don’t know what to do.”

I toss this prompt at ChatGPT. It transforms half-baked ideas into clear, actionable tasks, then ranks them so I know where to start.

    3. Ego check

Prompt: “Read over my ideas and evaluate them like a professional [book reviewer, chef, etc.] critic”

This one is not for the faint of heart. I use this a lot with my ideas and ChatGPT does not hold back. You can prompt it to be as brutal as you can handle.

Once the chatbot has been honest about your ideas, follow up with something like, “Based on your feedback, help me make this better.”

Whether you’re self-publishing a novel or hosting a party, this prompt is helpful when you want to be sure you don’t miss anything important.

    4. Growth mindset

Prompt: “Scan my past week and tell me what I’m unintentionally optimizing for.”

Upload or share your calendar with ChatGPT or simply brief the chatbot about your week, then use this prompt.

It’s a game-changer for self-awareness. By describing how I spent my time, money and energy, ChatGPT spots hidden patterns. It tells me if I’m prioritizing comfort over growth, or busyness over progress.

It’s helped me see my habits in a smart and useful way.
