  1. My British Friend first took me to see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at a midnight screening in downtown Philadelphia in 1979. I most recently viewed it as a senior, with my husband at the Mahoning Drive In in Lehighton. 2. I just watched "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for the 1st time.

I usually want to review/rate all movies I watch but...I'm still a bit confused on what I just watched. 😁😅

Okay, seriously, everything is totally fucked up, but in a really impressive, artistic way.

Music and the costumes are great and Tim Curry's performance especially is equally impressive, wonderful and crazy.

The story is fucked up, but not in a negative way, just...*gesticulates wildly to everywhere*

I can imagine the actual musical is really interesting, as well.

So, yeah. I...think I liked it, but it's WILD. 😁

    Curry's acting is absolutely lovely.

That and his speaking reminds me of something more recent...but I can't remember who Frank-N-Furter reminds me of.

    But yeah, wild stuff! 😁

  4. Playbill: Luke Evans to Play Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror Show on Broadway – Playbill

    Broadway News
Luke Evans to Play Frank-N-Furter in Rocky Horror Show on Broadway

Tony winner Sam Pinkleton will direct the revival of the Richard O’Brien cult classic.

We see you shiver with antici….pation. Well wait no longer, because the Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show has revealed who will play Frank-N-Furter: Luke Evans (who played Gaston in the 2017 Beauty and the Beast film). Richard O’Brien‘s The Rocky Horror Show will begin previews March 26, 2026, ahead of an April 23 opening night at Studio 54. The show is a limited engagement through June 21. Additional casting is to be announced.

Evans’ screen credits include The HobbitClash of the Titans, and Nine Perfect Strangers. He’s also appeared onstage in London in RentMiss Saigon, and Avenue QRocky Horror will mark his Broadway debut.

Said Tony-winning director Sam Pinkleton (Oh, Mary!) in a statement: “I’m giddy to crack this untamable classic open with the razor-sharp Luke Evans at the center. And I hope to do at Studio 54 what The Rocky Horror Show has done for people around the world for decades—open a dimension to another possible reality. It seriously is the honor of a lifetime to bring the freakiest people I’ve ever met into the freakiest theatre I’ve ever been in to revisit the freakiest show there’s ever been. No pressure, of course. Rocky Horror is, to me, a sublime, ridiculous, giant-hearted act of love—a trashy little musical that means so many things to generations of tender weirdos with mascara streaming down their faces. I hope we can make something joyous, unfathomable, straight from outer space and I can’t wait to welcome, really WELCOME you into the slimy tentacles of Studio 54.”

The production has also announced its creative team. Rocky Horror will feature choreography by Ani Taj (Dead Outlaw), music direction and orchestrations by Kris Kukul (Beetlejuice), set design by Tony Award nominee dots (Oh, Mary!), costume design by David I. Reynoso (Water for Elephants), lighting design by Tony winner Jane Cox (Appropriate), sound design by Tony winner Brian Ronan (Beautiful), and hair and makeup design by Alberto “Albee” Alvarado (The Outsiders).

Said creator O’Brien in a statement: “It is music to my ears to hear that a cast of very fine actors is on its way to NYC in order to play let’s dress-up and make-believe, sing and dance and uplift the hearts of all those who enjoy the gift of free-thinking and the pleasure of love. Break out the fishnets and let’s have a party.”

The Rocky Horror Show first premiered in London at the Royal Court Theatre (Upstairs) on June 19, 1973. It moved to several other locations, and ran a cumulative 2,960 performances, closing in 1980. The musical follows a straight-laced couple, Brad and Janet, who stumble upon a spooky house on a rainy night, and become attracted to the strange denizens who live within—particularly Frank-N-Furter, a gender non-conforming mad scientist. The show’s rock-influenced score include the crowd-pleasing songs “Sweet Transvestite, “The Timewarp,” “Dammit Janet,” and “Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a Touch Me.”

  6. ‘Time Warp’ dance still winning hearts as ‘Rocky Horror’ turns 50 – USA Today

Let’s do the ‘Time Warp’ again! The story behind ‘Rocky Horror’s signature song

    By Brian Truitt, USA TODAY

Barry Bostwick has a witty response at the ready anytime someone asks him if he can do the Time Warp.

“I go, ‘Well, is it a step to the left or is it a step to the right?’ They have to say it’s to the left. I say, ‘Because I only remember the pelvic thrust.’ That to me was the most important part of that dance,” says “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” star about one of the soundtrack’s signature songs.

The music of “Rocky Horror” for decades has entertained generations of fans, from the original 1973 stage show in England to the 1975 cult classic movie to so many revivals and midnight showings since. (The film’s 50th anniversary is being celebrated with a newly restored version on tour through November and a 4K Blu-ray/DVD out Oct. 7.) Everybody’s got their favorite showtune, but what was supposed to just be a twist on the Twist, the buoyant and catchy “Time Warp,” found a life of its own.Join our Watch Party!

Fran-N-Furter (Tim Curry, center) with his minions Columbia (Nell Campbell), Magenta (Patricia Quinn) and Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien) in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“The genius thing was the ‘Time Warp’ told you how to do it,” says Patricia Quinn, who played the servant Magenta on both stage and screen. “The only other song to do that was the ‘Hokey Pokey.’

‘Time Warp’ came from needing a ‘Rocky Horror’ dance

Rehearsing for the original “The Rocky Horror Show” stage show in 1973, director Jim Sharman wanted a song-and-dance number for the three servants. Riff Raff (O’Brien), Magenta and Columbia (Nell Campbell) are minions of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a lingerie-clad mad scientist from the planet Transsexual who creates a “Frankenstein”-esque muscle man named Rocky.

Campbell recalls Sharman asking for something like the scene in Jean-Luc Godard’s French film “Bande à Part” “where two gangsters and their moll put some money in a jukebox, and the three of them in unison dance the Madison.” (A popular 1950s line dance, the Madison is also mentioned in passing in the “Rocky Horror” movie.)

  7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show turns 50 – CBS Sunday Morning – September 7, 2025

CBS Sunday Morning today looked back at the 50-year history of the cult cinema classic, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” embedded above.

In addition, I’ve researched, aided by my trust sidesick AI, some highlights of the best RHPS history and notes about the film, its history, midnight showings, cast, and include those excerpts here in the post. “Let’s Do the Timewarp Again!”

Let’s Do the Time Warp Again! 50 Years of Rocky Horror History

    Film Origins & Creation

    • Stage to Screen: Based on Richard O’Brien’s 1973 stage musical The Rocky Horror Show, the film premiered in the UK on August 14, 1975, and in the US on September 26, 1975.
    • Initial Flop: Despite its later success, Rocky Horror was a complete box office disaster when first released, pulled from theaters after poor performance.
    • Cultural Inspiration: O’Brien created the musical as a tribute to the science fiction and B-movie horror films he loved, with opening number Science Fiction/Double Feature referencing classics like “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Flash Gordon,” and “King Kong.”

    Record-Breaking Run

    • Longest Theatrical Release: Still in limited release in 2025, Rocky Horror holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-running theatrical release in film history—50 years and counting.
    • Midnight Movie Pioneer: The film essentially created the midnight movie phenomenon, with the first regular midnight showings beginning in 1976.
    • Global Gross: What started as a flop has earned over $170 million worldwide through its unprecedented theatrical longevity.

    Iconic Cast & Characters

    • Tim Curry: His breakout role as the “sweet transvestite” Dr. Frank-N-Furter became one of cinema’s most memorable performances.
    • Star Power: Featured Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as the naive couple Brad and Janet, with Meat Loaf as motorcycle-riding Eddie.
    • Supporting Cast: Richard O’Brien (also the writer) as Riff Raff, Patricia Quinn as Magenta, and Little Nell as Columbia rounded out the core ensemble.

    Midnight Madness & Audience Participation

    • Shadow Casts: Live amateur performers act out the film in front of the screen during screenings, a tradition that began organically and continues worldwide.
    • Prop Culture: Audiences bring rice, toast, water guns, and newspaper to throw at specific moments, though many theaters now regulate prop policies.
    • Costume Tradition: Fans dress as characters, though this has decreased over the years, with some theaters hosting themed nights like “prom night” or “lingerie night.”
    • Safe Space: The midnight showings became sanctuaries where people could express themselves freely, particularly important for LGBTQ+ communities and those feeling marginalized.

    50th Anniversary Celebrations (2025)

    • Special Tour: “The Rocky Horror Picture Show Spectacular Tour” is in progress, for September-November 2025, featuring original cast members Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn, and Nell Campbell across 55 North American cities.
    • 4K Restoration: A newly restored 4K HDR edition has a forthcoming release in October 2025 in collectible SteelBook format with Dolby Vision and Atmos audio.
    • Deluxe Soundtrack: 50th anniversary edition on 180g red-in-gold vinyl featuring never-before-seen photos and production diary excerpts.
    • Documentary Features: Two commemorative documentaries were produced: “Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror” and another exploring the Rocky Horror phenomenon.

    Cultural Impact & Legacy

    • Cult Classic Definition: Rocky Horror essentially defined what we mean by a “cult movie”—the first, the biggest, and the template for all others.
    • Life-Changing Impact: The BBC noted the film has literally “saved lives” by providing community and acceptance for outsiders and marginalized individuals.
    • Continuing Tradition: Famous venues like Los Angeles’ Nuart Theatre have hosted weekly Saturday night screenings since 1986, with shadow cast performances by groups like “Sins O’ The Flesh.”
    • Pandemic Resilience: Even during COVID-19 lockdowns, a Portland theater continued showing the film to empty houses for 54 weeks, and celebrities did live-streamed readings to support political causes.

    Additional Resources:

The unique film’s enduring appeal lies in its celebration of sexual liberation, gender fluidity, and the joy of being different—themes that continue to resonate with new generations of fans who find community in the darkness of midnight theaters worldwide. Somewhere, always, it seems now, there’ a “Time Warp” waiting for you!

  8. Celebrating 50 years of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Ars Technica

    A video musical introduction…

    And some memorable images…

Celebrating 50 years of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Ars Technica

When The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in 1975, no one could have dreamed that it would become the longest-running theatrical release film in history. But that’s what happened. Thanks to a killer soundtrack, campy humor, and a devoted cult following, Rocky Horror is still a mainstay of midnight movie culture. In honor of its 50th anniversary, Disney/20th Century Studios is releasing a newly restored 4K HDR version in October, along with deluxe special editions on DVD and Blu-ray. And the film has inspired not one, but two documentaries marking its five decades of existence: Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror and Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror.

(Spoilers below, because it’s been 50 years.)

The film is an adaption of Richard O’Brien‘s 1973 musical for the stage, The Rocky Horror Show. At the time, he was a struggling actor and wrote the musical as an homage to the science fiction and B horror movies he’d loved since a child. In fact, the opening song (“Science Fiction/Double Feature“) makes explicit reference to many of those, including 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, Flash Gordon (1936), King Kong (1933), The Invisible Man (1933), Forbidden Planet (1956), and The Day of the Triffids (1962), among others.

The musical ran for six years in London and was well-received when it was staged in Los Angeles. But the New York City production bombed. By then the film was already in development with O’Brien—who plays the hunchbacked butler Riff Raff in the film—co-writing the script. Director Jim Sharman retained most of the London stage cast, but brought in American actors Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon to play Brad and Janet, respectively. And he shot much of the film at the Victorian Gothic manor Oakley Court in Berkshire, England, where several Hammer horror movies had been filmed.  In fact, Sharman made use of several old props and set pieces from old Hammer productions, most notably the tank and dummy from 1958’s The Revenge of Frankenstein.

The film opens with nice wholesome couple Brad and Janet attending a wedding and awkwardly getting engaged themselves. They decide to visit their high school science teacher, Dr. Scott (Jonathan Adams), because they met in his class, but they get a flat tire en route and end up stranded in the rain. They seek refuge and a phone at a nearby castle, hoping to call for roadside assistance. Instead, they are pressured into becoming guests of the castle’s owner, a transvestite mad scientist called Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), and his merry bad of misfits.
