  1. Fan Expo Chicago 2026 Photos, Part 5 of 5: Everything Else!

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: It’s that time again! This weekend my wife Anne and I attended the fifth edition of Fan Expo Chicago at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in the suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. In 2022 they arose from the ashes of the late Wizard World Chicago, which we attended eleven times, and have expended tremendous efforts to maintain the previous showrunners’ geek-marketed traditions to keep luring in longtime fans and newcomers alike... ...and it all comes down to this: one last photo gallery touring what else we saw beyond the cosplay, besides the celebs, past Artists Alley, and even outside the convention center's walls. The con was large; it contained multitudes. One thing our weekend contained much less of than expected: severe thunderstorms. Our local feeds showed us countless photos and stories from the destructive floods that too many consecutive rainy days had brought to Indiana -- surpassing all expectations, overwhelming meager precautions, overtaking numerous areas and forcing more than a few evacuations. Our hearts go out to those affected, the families who've lost loved ones in the resulting calamities, and the communities struggling to recover. […]

  2. Fan Expo Chicago 2026 Photos, Part 4 of 5: Comics!

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: It’s that time again! This weekend my wife Anne and I attended the fifth edition of Fan Expo Chicago at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in the suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. In 2022 they arose from the ashes of the late Wizard World Chicago, which we attended eleven times, and have expended tremendous efforts to maintain the previous showrunners’ geek-marketed traditions to keep luring in longtime fans and newcomers alike... ...and for this longtime comics collector, that means keeping an eye out for favorite creators and/or new reading material. Pictured above are the graphic novels I picked up in this year's Artists Alley, plus a sketch of a character from my childhood. As for the creators who sold me those items... […]

  3. Fan Expo Chicago 2026 Photos, Part 3 of 5: Celebrities and Catastrophes

…and for us it meant another round of photo ops with actors from movies and TV shows we’ve enjoyed. Longtime MCC readers know jazz hands are our thing, if we feel it’s worth a shot to ask, and if the stars are amenable. Sometimes they don’t, and that’s fine! They’re adults, we’re adults, and we accept it — their image, their choice. But it’s a lot cooler when they do. Overall we enjoyed ourselves, but this year FEC was crippled by the worst photo-op complications we've ever experienced for a show of its size within the past fifteen years. […]

  4. Fan Expo Chicago 2026 Photos, Part 2 of 5: Slightly More Cosplay!

[Content warning! The following entry is rated 'S' for spoilers for season two of X-Men '97, which just concluded August 12th. Reader discretion is advised.] Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: It’s that time again! This weekend my wife Anne and I attended the fifth edition of Fan Expo Chicago at the Donald E. As is the MCC procedure, let’s start with mandatory cosplay photos! The humble duo here at MCC enjoys the panoply of costumes, and appreciates the makers and wearers who enliven every comic-con with their talents and their exaltation of various fandoms. We regret we can only represent a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the total cosplay wonderment that was on display this weekend, especially from cons like this where we spent far more time waiting in lengthy lines that ate up precious time we could’ve spent taking more pics. We’re just an aging couple doing what we can for happy sharing fun... ...so here're all the cosplayers we photographed on Saturday when we weren't trapped in lines, crushed in crowds, or fussing with two straight days of catastrophic photo-op failure. (More on that next time.) Enjoy again! […]

  6. Figuring out my schedule for Necronomicon Providence. The one problem with this convention: it's *too* packed full of stuff! This shows my calendar for Saturday, containing all of the sessions that I'd be interested in.

They are drawn from treaties such as the #genocide #convention & the #Geneva #conventions & protocols that the US government has either ratified or incorporated into its #military #manuals. Is it really un-American to outlaw genocide? While Rubio complains that the US government cannot 'control' #international #law, no one should be able to."

  12. I do miss the friends I've made and kept meeting at geek and gaming conventions over the years, but at this point I don't think I shall ever attend another one.

    And that makes me sad.

    Visit me at CONvergence 2026

Okay, well, that year passed quickly. Back at CONvergence 2026. Yeah, that was insanely fast. I’ll be back in the vending room selling my books and talking monsters.

If you haven’t been to CONvergence, it is pretty much an amazing convention. I love it dearly. Been selling books and attending for many years now. It is a great celebration of diversity and geekdom. I adore it.

You can learn more about it right here

I’m on one panel this year. The Year in Anime. It is on Friday at 2:00 pm in the Hyatt 2 Greenway. I’ll be in cosplay. Knuckle Buster from my Hero Academia Vigilantes. I’m excited to talk about all my anime choices from this last year. Also, I’ll be doing Expedition 33 cosplay on Saturday. I love that game.

Otherwise I’ll be vending all weekend selling my books. Cannot wait. I love talking about this event. They have day passes as well. Enjoy.

Again, you can learn more about CONvergence 2026 right here

  15. Sonic FanFest Cardiff 2026

The con itself is exactly the sort of event I was being wistful about when I started this blog – just taking over a hotel (or at least a floor of it) and having a bunch of fan-run panels, a bunch of traders and enough free time to chitchat and talk with Internet Friends and new people where the hard part of the conversation starting is already done because after all your both here!

  17. Indiana Comic Convention 2026 Photos, Part 3 of 3: Con Life Before and After Nicolas Cage

Previously on Midlife Crisis Crossover: It’s that time again! This weekend my wife Anne and I attended the twelfth edition of the Indiana Comic Convention at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis -- a fun opportunity for fans to look at walls covered with old comics, build lightsabers, buy 3D-printed knickknacks, overstock on Funko Pops, respect the anime fandom whose population dwarfs us older generations, avoid AI “art”, and scratch their heads at the inexplicable comeback of the 19th-century rubber-duck fad. Rather than dump all our pics into a single omnibus entry, we’re mercifully splitting them into a trilogy of galleries... ...concluding with anything and everything involving neither celebrities nor cosplay. Meeting Academy Award Winner Nicolas Cage may have been the sensational headline news, but he's not all we saw during our two days onsite. […]

  18. Indiana Comic Convention 2026 Photos, Part 2 of 3: Nicolas Cage and Friends!

Rare are the opportunities when a Midwest comic-con signs a guest who's such a significant household name that local news outlets treat it as a major headline event. Usually our cons are relegated to a Thursday morning sidebar to the effect of, "Looking for something to do this weekend? Lee Greenwood will be performing at the Fieldhouse, here's a list of fifteen different farmers' markets, our state parks are still pretty, and Hoosier Comic Expo is bringing in three Yellow Rangers, a canceled stand-up comic, and...uh, sorry, those are the only names we recognize and our Google's broken." Not so this time: ICC waited till a mere week before showtime to announce they'd scored Academy Award Winner Nicolas Cage's Very First Appearance at an American Convention. This became a BIG DEAL. For once our journalists had something to write about besides sports. […]

  19. Indiana Comic Convention 2026 Photos, Part 1 of 3: Very Tiny Cosplay Sampler!

It’s that time again! This weekend my wife Anne and I attended the twelfth edition of the Indiana Comic Convention at the Indiana Convention Center in scenic downtown Indianapolis, and by "scenic" I mean "overcrowded with more construction equipment than a Tonka Truck factory". ICC 2026 was a fun opportunity for fans to look at walls covered with old comics, build lightsabers, buy 3D-printed knickknacks, overstock on Funko Pops, respect the anime fandom whose population dwarfs us older generations, avoid AI "art", and scratch their heads at the inexplicable comeback of the 19th-century rubber-duck fad. The showrunners added still more square footage to their dominion, on track to match Gen Con's imperial sprawl if they can keep up the pace for another 20-30 years or so. Apart from a few bottlenecked aisles, geek life had ample elbow room to thrive and sometimes enjoy breathing space in these hallowed halls of pop-culture commerce. Rather than dump all our pics into a single omnibus entry, we're mercifully splitting them into a trilogy of galleries. Up first: mandatory cosplay pics! We regret ours is such a measly collection, but: (a) we spent a lot of time in lines; (b) we tend to gravitate toward characters we recognize, and our recognition rate drops as the youngsters insist on liking different shows and comics than we do; and (c) everyone walks so fast and we're old and tired and it's all hot and it hurts an' stuff. Even if we don't capture them all on our own devices, we really do appreciate the cosplayers who brighten everyone's experience. The jazz-hands photo ops and other sights will be shared in the other chapters. We regret we can only represent a fraction of a sliver of an iota of a fraction of the total costumed wonderment that was on display this weekend. We’re just an aging couple doing what we can for happy sharing fun. Enjoy! Corrections are humbly welcomed for any we didn't recognize or might’ve misidentified! […]
