  2. As #spring is here, it’s time to resume our own form of #EthicalTourism or #EcoToruism (day trips involving travel only by #bike and #PublicTransport#Trains, in this case). As I’m a #StructuralEngineer, I like seeing interesting #structures and so I picked #Portsmouth. Quite recently, it had a #tower built called the #SpinnakerTower as it resembles a #spinnaker #sail. It is by no means unique, nor is it the tallest, but it’s comfortably within a day trip’s distance of us.

  7. Didn't get around to this on Friday, but the last #structuralengineer #dataviz I had planned as a draft for this project was to *finally* do an Upset plot (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UpSet_pl)

No frills on this one, but it was fun to figure out how to do this in raw d3 rather than using the library.

  8. Another quick stacked bar chart, less than 10 lines of code with
    @observablehq #observableplot

This one looks at for active #structuralengineer licenses, how "old" is the license holder's oldest license, and how many states are they currently actively licensed in.

  9. While it *is* crowd dependent, I’ve found introducing myself as a recovering #structuralengineer is almost guaranteed to get a bunch of laughs.

Went to a panel discussion/site visit for a hybrid mass timber building in LA and coincidentally met quite a number of recovering engineers still engaged in the built environment 🤔

  10. A much overdue #introduction:

I'm a #StructuralEngineer by day, working mostly in #steel and #concrete. I do everything, but a lot more moving #bridges and #canal locks than most. Some #dams. All my stuff is old, so it's mostly about safety and reliability.

Second job: very willing farmhand for @PickwickSheprd, who I think mostly puts up with me because she was crazy enough to marry me. We raise #sheep and she trains #sheepdogs. I fix the old #tractors and help run #fences and #buildings.

  11. #introduction

I am a #StructuralEngineer (California PE) turned #SoftwareDeveloper living in Brooklyn, NY.

    I love #bikes, #biketouring, #xbiking, #bikepacking, etc.

I have spent the last three years learning #handtool #woodworking in order to build #chairs

    I also #sew my own #clothes.

  12. I am more than happy to give out career advice for #structuralengineer s that want to transition to tech, but damn, I do *not* appreciate it when it’s just blatant fishing for a job referral to my current employer.

I can *very* much tell when someone is saying “that’s so interesting” while going through their checklist to calculate how much value they can get out of the conversation. It’s one of the things I *loathed* about most social interactions at an Ivy League during undergrad. 🤬

  13. A friend that is a former #structuralengineer said she tells people she used to work for a non-profit, which is such a sick burn as it’s a job that

    1. Directly benefits society
    2. No one really knows about/understands
    3. Pays crap
    4. Is (overall) not profitable

  14. Long overdue #introduction,

I’m a #structuralengineer and a #software developer. I tried to do both for 5+ years with an emphasis on #structural before deciding it would be a lot better for my career and happiness to focus on the #software.

    I’m currently working as a #fullstackengineer. I also do contract work related to #sustainabledesign #embodiedcarbon #sustainability

    Other interests:
    #dataviz #bridges #emacs #foss #cats #builtenvironment

  19. Nothing I love more than a #structuralengineer telling me their complex logic in an excel sheet (without any macros) can’t be converted into actual software. t.co/1pRzdwQRa5

  20. Goes to #PyConUS2022, takes photos of theater being demolished a block away from the venue 😆🤦‍♀️ #structuralengineer @[email protected]

  21. This is version 0.1 and is a proof of concept but it already comfortably holds 8 kg. The next steps will be to get all the pieces properly aligned and contacting each other at the correct angle. I’ll make a #StructuralEngineer out of her yet.

  22. My husband and I are watching Godzilla (2014) and for the love of god, Hollywood, a #structuralengineer's bill rate is anywhere from $100-300 an hour. Please hire someone to explain how a suspension bridge works. My eyes are bleeding.
