Mientras millones de personas veían el horror del 11 de septiembre por televisión, él cogió un casco, se puso un abrigo de bombero cubierto de polvo y regresó a trabajar.
Antes de convertirse en uno de los actores más reconocibles de Hollywood, Steve Buscemi había sido bombero en Nueva York.
Entró en el FDNY con apenas 18 años y trabajó durante cuatro años en la estación Engine Company 55, en Little Italy.
No era una celebridad jugando a ser “uno más”: sabía exactamente lo que hacía porque ya había vivido esa vida.Steve nació en Brooklyn en 1957 y creció en una familia trabajadora de origen italiano e irlandés.
Su padre era trabajador sanitario y veterano de guerra; su madre trabajaba como camarera y recepcionista.
La familia no tenía dinero de sobra y él pasó una juventud bastante normal para el Nueva York de clase obrera de aquella época.Estudió en Valley Stream Central High School y, como muchos actores antes de triunfar, fue enlazando trabajos corrientes mientras intentaba abrirse camino.
Pasó por gasolineras, mudanzas y finalmente el cuerpo de bomberos.
Durante aquellos años empezó también a interesarse por el teatro y la interpretación.A comienzos de los años 80 dejó el FDNY para probar suerte como actor.
No fue un salto fácil.
Durante bastante tiempo sobrevivió con papeles pequeños, actuaciones en bares y películas independientes de bajo presupuesto.
Su aspecto tampoco encajaba con el canon típico de Hollywood: rostro delgado, ojos cansados y una apariencia más cercana a una persona real que a una estrella tradicional.Precisamente eso terminó convirtiéndose en su sello.
Directores como Quentin Tarantino y los hermanos Coen vieron en él algo distinto.
Poco a poco empezó a destacar en películas como "Reservoir Dogs", "Fargo", "El gran Lebowski", "Con Air" o "Ghost World".
Más tarde llegaría "Boardwalk Empire", la serie que consolidó todavía más su prestigio y "Armageddon"En su vida personal estuvo casado durante más de treinta años con la artista Jo Andres, con quien tuvo un hijo.
La muerte de ella en 2019 fue un golpe muy duro para Buscemi, que siempre ha mantenido una vida privada bastante discreta y alejada del estilo típico de Hollywood.Pero el episodio que hizo que mucha gente lo mirara con otros ojos ocurrió fuera del cine.
El 11 de septiembre de 2001, mientras el mundo veía caer las Torres Gemelas por televisión, Buscemi sintió el impulso de volver a donde había empezado todo.
Al día siguiente se presentó en su antigua compañía de bomberos y pidió ayudar.No avisó a la prensa.
No buscó publicidad.
Simplemente volvió al trabajo.Durante varios días trabajó turnos de 12 horas en la Zona Cero removiendo escombros, ayudando en las tareas de recuperación y buscando supervivientes junto a otros bomberos y rescatistas.
Las pocas fotografías que existen de él allí muestran a un hombre agotado, cubierto de polvo y con el rostro completamente abatido.
No parecen imágenes de una estrella de cine.
Parecen las de un trabajador más intentando soportar algo imposible de asimilar.Aquello le dejó secuelas emocionales importantes.
Años después habló de depresión y estrés postraumático.
Explicó que hubo momentos en los que sentía que seguía atrapado mentalmente en aquellos días entre humo y ruinas.Con el tiempo comenzó a colaborar activamente con organizaciones de apoyo a bomberos y equipos de emergencia, especialmente relacionadas con salud mental y enfermedades derivadas del 11-S.
Hoy muchos recuerdan a Steve Buscemi por sus películas.
Pero para otros, su gesto más importante no ocurrió delante de una cámara.Ocurrió cuando decidió volver al humo mientras todos los demás intentaban huir de él.
