Pah, who cares about Android? 😉

The ONLY important number is #Debian-#PopCon. Of course 🙂

Last year, when I checked, there were 1053 installations of Matrix clients (most of them nheko) and 3124 of #Jabber clients (top 3: #Gajim, #Psi, and #Dino).

Also, 119 Matrix server installs (synapse) and 904 #XMPP servers (most were #prosody, then #ejabberd).

    qa.debian.org/popcon.php

OTOH, I'm using Gajim as my Matrix client via #slidge 🤔

  6. @streetcoder

Voted #prosody by @prosodyim. Make sure to stay with the default backend, i.e. filestore, because it's stable and battle-tested.

I assume, that #ejabbberd by @ejabberd can also work with 4 GiB RAM. In that case, I recommend the PostgreSQL backend, not Mnesia.

Never tried to run a Matrix server. I only use it from #Jabber via the #slidge gateway.

  7. @M_E_ST @david_chisnall

Yes, #Jabber/#XMPP does that, too. You can have bridges to Signal, Whatsapp, Telegram and many other silos. Just like Matrix. In both cases, you need an account on the respective walled garden to use it. I.e. you still need to sacrifice a phone number and maybe a goat.

  12. @HoSnoopy @kuketzblog @reticuleena

  13. New blog post! Some heartwarming news from the slidge community: the family is growing.

  15. More from #snikket / #xmpp exploration

Just had an audio and video call working with a family member, which is more than I ever managed with #matrix / #elementx

The final piece of the puzzle is integrating #slidge so that I can keep in contact with the rest of the family from one app, and then it's decommissioning time...

  16. Good news everyone! ✨

Movim is now implementing XEP-0317: Hats and can display your chatroom Roles 🤩

And with the awesome work done with @nicoco on #Slidge the Discord, Telegram and WhatsApp roles are now also displayed in Movim properly 👌

Now lets work on the admin panels to configure them 💪!

  19. Libervia CLI Tip 12:

You want to communicate with people using a third-party network? XMPP has a long history of "gateways", server components which let you communicate with non-XMPP networks (so-called "legacy" networks in XMPP literature).

The `li gateway` commands help you discover, register or unregister to such gateway.

Libervia itself implements gateways (to communicate with ActivityPub or Email). Check also slidge.im

  20. #JustAdminThings

My #Letsencrypt certificates auto-renewed (yay!) but did not propagate correctly to #Prosody (XMPP server), and #Slidge (Whatsapp-to-XMPP bridge) silently lost connection, meaning that I missed on roughly a week of family chat, only thinking "what a boring time of year".

I'll have to rethink this Rube Goldberg machine of message delivery.

  21. While we'd like everyone to use decentralised messaging standards like #XMPP, there are times when you just want to stay in touch with a friend or group on the #murky lands of the other side. Thankfully we have software like #Matterbridge and #Slidge to bridge your messages across to other platforms—although no guarantees about what happens to your message once it reaches there 🤖️

  22. There are some projects I know that long, they almost became like old friends. There's @movim from @edhelas for example. Though I only used it for a short period of time and never contributed, I know it since the beginning (which is quite some years ago) and learned a lot about writing PHP- and websocket based server services along the way. That was helpful for me and it's great to see those people are still up and running and developing it, including , which I didn't know before.

  23. @raccoon regarding WhatsApp, they used to support KaiOS but decided to drop support last February. Possibly one of the reasons people became interested in Convo. Since it's XMPP, should work but I don't know if that'd be functional enough for you?

In India the main barrier is banking and payment apps which are increasingly locked down and usually don't run if your phone is rooted, let alone trying a custom ROM or something like . Of course, they only support Android and iOS 😕

  24. @nigel good to know! I last experimented with bridges, what...a decade ago? They were pretty unstable at the point (more the fault of the messaging companies changing their APIs every so often than anything else) but it's good to hear things have improved

I'm lucky not to have to use most of those centralised platforms any more, but I should try running again and see if it helps my friends

  25. @nlnet @NGIZero I hope to see widespread adoption among XMPP services, and notably with gateways (wink wink Slidge and Biboumi) and XMPP servers.

    #XMPP #gateway #Slidge #Biboumi.

  26. #XMPP is the gold standard for interoperability. Its ability to connect projects from different creators is unparalleled, making it the go-to choice for seamless communication.

Community member Luke wrote a guide on configuring #Openfire to work with #Slidge.

Slidge is a gateway designed to connect you to chat networks like WhatsApp, Telegram or Matrix. It acts as a bridge, allowing you to interact with your contacts directly from your single, preferred XMPP client.

  27. @nigel

I tried the #whatsapp bridge #slidge. But the problem is that whatsapp service ask you to use their app every now and then to scan a qr code...

I would wish so much #xmpp got standardised...

  28. @Samsy @arbocenc #XMPP can run bridges (called "Transports" or "Gateways" in XMPP terms) since the early ages. And nowadays, there are modern ones with tight integrations: #Slidge being a flagship (including a #Matrix gateway), and I'm myself working on ActivityPub gateway and soon a email one with #Libervia. #Cheogram is also working on SMTP gateway. And #Biboumi is the flagship #IRC gateway.

  30. @adam @nicoco Seeking other #XMPP bridges? Consider:

    - #Slidge: slidge.im/core/ - current flagship of XMPP bridges

    - #spectrum 2: spectrum.im/ - older, compatible with many Pidgin plugins (details: developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Third)

    - #Biboumi: biboumi.louiz.org - best for #IRC

    - #Libervia: libervia.org - for #ActivityPub (I'm the lead dev). Now stabilizing.
