  4. JMP + Snikket is just an amazing combo for those that are privacy and security minded people for $6 a month.

My own XMPP server fully encrypted using the same Signal/Whisper protocol with 10 accounts and a number not tied to my phone.

I don't know about you but if that is not worth $6 a month I don't know what is.

Big tech is not your friend. Act accordingly.

  11. Hello to all #XMPP folks in the fediverse. I need some #fedihelp from the community. One of my users on the XMPP server is an iPhone user. She was using #SiskinIM up to now. Now when she opens #Siskin, it is completely empty, no chats, no contacts, nothing. My question now is, what is in the moment the app to go with under iOS? I heard a lot about #Monal in the past, what about #snikket ?

  16. I'm testing #xmpp with #snikket today. It was straight forward to install the server. Like 10minutes. I was very impressed!!

But then the problem started… with #encryption key managment problem.

Basically I wanted to write to a #quicksy user (aka myself) and that didn't work because of some 'Aucun appareil pour qui chiffrer ce message n'a été trouvé. Recherche d'appareils en cours…'

I know that there is a lot of work to improve the situation. I'm open to report bugs, but I have no idea if it should be done in snikket, quicksy, gajim, kaidan …

Si bien está funcionando desde el 1 de noviembre, es la primera vez que le "doy pa delante" aquí, ya que considero que está lo suficientemente "maduro" como para dejarlo crecer.

@Datenproletarier Are you able and willing to run your own server? Or is your community willing to pay for managed hosting? If so, a @snikket_im server could be worth kicking the tires on. It can do voice/video and group rooms, and although I haven't tested group voice chat, 1:1 voice/video was excellent.

Full disclosure: Years ago I got paid to write copy for the Snikket.org site. But I recommend #Snikket only because it's 100% Free Code, decentralised (XMPP), and cool.

  19. More from #snikket / #xmpp exploration

Just had an audio and video call working with a family member, which is more than I ever managed with #matrix / #elementx

The final piece of the puzzle is integrating #slidge so that I can keep in contact with the rest of the family from one app, and then it's decommissioning time...

  20. @neil just wanted to say thanks for posting this. This is why I love the fediverse. I've just added #snikket to my homelab stack 👌

My daughter started school this year and is nearing the age where she'll start asking for a phone. For me, snikket is perfect for hosting a small family #xmpp instance. I might actually consider a 'device' for her in the near future.

Of course it'll also be locked down with #NextDNS and likely some other parental control/monitoring tools. But I'm also excited by the idea of my daughter introducing snikket/xmpp to her friends. Despite how practical it might actually be, sharing #foss #privacy and #digitalsovereignty with the younger generation makes it all worth while.

  21. @biline #XMPP never left, see what #ejabberd #prosody #snikket #openfire servers are up to. #Conversations_IM #Cheogram #monoclesChat will serve you as modern clients on #FDroid and #Monal for your fruit devices fans.

  23. I set up a #prosody #xmpp server, and I liked it. I tested both Linux and Android clients. I hit a wall getting people self-registered via #iOS. Self-reg works on #monal, but confuses the users with the default server so they always screw that part up. Even once logged in, I can't really recommend it. #snikket would have been perfect, but it obscures the usernames in group chats so as to be functionally useless. #siskin fails on self-registration, but everything else about it is good.

  28. @mastodonmigration Obligatory reminder that #Signal relies on a centralized and proprietary server, and does not belong here.

Users of #WhatsApp #Telegram #Discord #Signal and #Threema etc should use #XMPP instead, which is #FreeSoftware and federated.

    Users - check out #Quicksy (Android and iOS), #Prav, #Conversations, #Cheogram, #MonoclesChat, #Gajim, #Movim, #Monal...

    Self-hosters, check out #Snikket.

  29. @rysiek @kkarhan @agturcz An awful lot of people say they've used #XMPP "a while back". But they're often unaware of the best of XMPP, and have an unfairly negative view of it.

    Did you happen to try...

    ...#Snikket for hosting?
    snikket.org

...apps like #Quicksy and #Prav which use phone numbers for easy onboarding, same as #Signal #WhatsApp or #Telegram?
    quicksy.im
    prav.app

    ...featureful clients like #Cheogram #MonoclesChat #Gajim #Movim etc?

  30. @Mklt129 Thanks for testing! And don't worry about the delay; you replied in under 24 hours, which is quicker than I often reply to people, and there was no obligation to reply at all, if you didn't want to.

I'm glad you enjoyed listening to the recordings!

The URL text next to the player for each audio recording is visible, too, so it's not just screen reader users who might find it distracting, but I'm not sure whether that's a bug; it's potentially something that might have been chosen deliberately. Funnily enough, though, the URL text is shown under each corresponding player, not before it, as you were reporting, if I understood you correctly.

For what it's worth, I tried using TalkBack on Android both on the web version and in Snikket, using a proper XMPP account, and while I won't say it was easy (though I don't have much experience with TalkBack), the audio was playable both ways, and Snikket doesn't have the distracting URL text, so if you're wanting to listen to the recordings long-term, you might find a real XMPP account to be a preferable way to do it (though I don't have an iDevice, so I can't test the iOS version of Snikket, which is based on a different app from the Android version). These options might also work for @ladyhope, too, if she's wanting to listen long-term, and has a smartphone or tablet.

I'm really not sure whether the stuttering is the fault of VoiceOver or ConverseJS or Safari or something else.

  31. @danie10 @snikket_im

I personally feel that this is the optimal delivery and update methodology for future software distribution.

I've written about this at length in several articles, and more and more service daemons and client software are taking advantage of this form of direct from the developers method of delivery - not just Android apps.

#FairEmail is one such app that even states in the docs that this is the preferred method, although they do support a total of four methods:

    - Google PlayStore - crippleware due to google funding source restrictions. In all cases, this is by far the worst distribution point for software, if not with respect for the product that the developers want to deliver, but also with regards for the privacy of the users who are tracked, mined, and themselves repackaged as a quantifiable inventory item.
    - F-Droid custom Dev's repo - 2nd best option, because this is built with the developer's keys when the developer decides to push the product, and contain all feature sets that the developer chooses to include.
    - F-Droid repo - 3rd best option, since it is signed with F-Droid's keys and typically lags by some measure of time with respect to release dates, considering that F-Droid staff pushes these out on a best effort basis, according to the time they have available to do so.
    - Direct from the developers Git repo - This is the best method. They push a release and the next time you open the app you're notified of an update.

This is part of the magic of Slackware's philosophy too - Patrick and team don't church it up like most distro's do (Debian and AlmaLinux quite often, quite heavily wrt customizations, use Apache or Nginx HTTP servers as examples). Slackware tries to package up software as close to how the upstream intends it to be.

In earlier articles I've published on the topic, I've focused at times on a solution to a theme proffered by #Moxie_Marlinspike, who denigrates the open source model somewhat, for being at a great disadvantage when compared to that of proprietary solutions that can update and evolve protocols, APIs, etc., on a whim, because they're centrally managed and controlled by a single dictatorial source. Microsoft is one such classic example. You simply have NO CHOICE as to when you must allow your software to be EOLed, evolve, or update itself.

Using this model, however, where a central repo, or a distributed, CDN type of repo mirroring is deployed at the origin by the development team itself, FOSS has no problem upgrading even things like protocols as they evolve. Of course, it is ultimately up to the operators of the software to allow updates and the prerogative of the developers to establish the level of nags that users of the software will experience until they permit the updates to occur, but that's beyond the scope of the basis of advocating for this type of delivery model.

Okay I think I'm bordering on hijacking this thread, so I'll make a comment about these types of shennigans by Google, and how one one hand it's certainly a huge frustration, if not an impediment to being found and adopted by users, but moreover, a predatory practice by one of the most egregious violators of personal choice in the free market of consumerism and commerce.

It may hurt being pulled like that, but IMO, I don't think there's anything preventing the good folks behind #Snikket from pushing out the kind of crippleware that google wants them to, while at the same time pushing banner splashes in the app that explain just how fricken' useless it is under the terms necessary to distribute it via that medium, and encouraging users to install it instead by following the instructions at the #git_repo for a fully featured, #e2ee secure messaging platform.

IOW, there's always a silver lining - wear this dejection as a badge of honor and as the evidence to support the fact that you're on the right track!

  32. Happy new year from #joinjabber 😊 What are your #xmpp related new year's resolutions? How about giving selfhosting #snikket a try?

  33. "Look what happened to #XMPP", yeah, I use it every day without even thinking about it to receive calls and texts with zero friction thanks to the asskickery of #jmp and #snikket. The only thing I feel cut off from is Verizon. SUCK IT VERIZON
  34. If Snikket or Element could integrate the email protocol support from Delta Chat, in a way that supported E2EE with DC users (using Autocrypt), that would be my ideal comms client. Same if Delta Chat could support voice and video calling, over XMPP, matrix, and Jami protocols. Will SMS apps for MobileGNU integrate all this?

  36. Heard about Quicksy for the first time last weekend. It's another XMPP-but-easy app. It's an interesting field of development, especially when trying to get people off WhatsApp.

    Has anyone tried and compared #quicksy , #kontalk and #snikket ?
