Signing up on #Prav is currently broken due to bots requesting OTP without proceeding to the registration.
We are working on fixing this as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We are seeing bots attacking our Prav SMS verification API end point - they request OTP, but don't complete registration.
So we are forced to stop registrations until we figure out a solution. We have some suggestions already, if you have more ideas or like already proposed suggestions, then please comment here

@codewizard @rimu @Jerry @prav Better than #WhatsApp because we have users privacy as priority unlike them. Their business model depends on collecting personal data. Signal is better than WhatsApp, but it still controlled by a single organization. Prav is part of #XMPP network so people who don't like Prav have choice of using other apps like #Quicksy and still talk to all #Prav users.

#Prav can be installed on #iOS through #Sidestore.
If you would like to install, here are the steps:
- Set up Sidestore at sidestore.io
- Add prav.app/SidestoreiOS.json as a source.
- Find Prav in SideStore and install it.
#Apple doesn't allow alternative app stores in #India, so this option is not available for Indian users 🙁

@tuxicoman @prav indeed taking #xmpp to the masses is another goal of #Prav. So far we have gone to various #FreeSoftware conferences and setup booths. We have active presence on fedi. Eventually we hope to go to other kinds of events as well.

@tuxicoman @prav We are just offering some hand holding to get started with #xmpp. #Prav is ready for iOS too, but #Apple won't accept it in App Store, so people have to take the longer route of #SideStore. We have started the process of involving the users to prioritize missing pieces in #XMPP apps.

@tuxicoman @prav it is very close to #quicksy in current state as we started from quicksy. It offers a choice to users - they can choose either Quicksy or #Prav without considering what their friends are using and users of either app can talk to users of the other app. We made small changes already like changing SMS provider so it works in countries like Nepal and Brazil where Quicksy SMS don't get delivered. We hope to offer custom username option and may eventually get other features.

Thanks to @double_a_runi 's 'how hard can it be attitude' we have fixed a regression in @prav 's contact discovery when we updated our #android app, but did not update the server in sync (both are based on #quicksy).
So with this, we are set to exit beta and consider ourselves stable / Generally Available soon.

Do you have an android phone? Do you use play store? Can you review @prav ?
We are not asking for 5* reviews for rewards, just provide your honest reviews after trying it. This will help more users to have confidence.
Currently we have 500+ downloads and 4. 2* average score. Last time we checked, we had 842 users. Your support and participation is crucial as we don't have huge marketing budget like #Meta.

With persistent hard work by @vaidik_ Prav (@prav) is now available on iPhones!
Though with Apple rejecting it from App Store, installing it is a bit involved. You will need to setup http://SideStore.io and then add Prav source https://prav.app/SidestoreiOS.json

@prav was rejected by #Apple from app store saying it is similar to #Quicksy and #Monal. So we are exploring our options to make Prav available to iPhone users. Ideas and help welcome.
We are also looking at #aptoid and also filing a complaint with Competition Commission. Why should we allow Apple to gatekeep apps on iPhone?

Though Prav for iOS is available in test flight, #Apple has rejected its inclusion in App Store. We have filed an appeal and looking to distribute it via alternate market places, though only limited to Europe.

I'd like to talk about how we built #Prav iOS app to demonstrate #FreeSoftware development need not be restricted to programmers.
A common misunderstanding people have is about their inability to modify software beyond asking/demanding or just donating to projects.
In Prav, community prioritized building an iOS app through a feature poll. We then raised funds to hire an iOS developer.
Finding a developer was the hardest part, but it does not involve any technical skills. #OpenSource

Do you love #XMPP and have some time to dedicate to it? and you don't mind Google paying you a few thousand US dollars while doing it, consider implementing cross signing in @prav as part of Google Summer of Code.

It is very frustrating when people can't decrypt some messages when people in a group adds new devices. It is one of the top priority features of #prav community.

This post is an ongoing tradition of mine that I do at the end of each year.
- Met many new amazing & crazy people
- Gave my first conference talk. (o^▽^o)
- Started volunteering at Prav cooperative #prav
- #emacs , yes
- yep, failed alot again, like alot...
- Got introdcued to #guix , started using it and contributing to it
- Started participating in the Floss community.
- #mentalhealth is kinda okay, but still need care
- Got introduced a million new things (yeah, I am pretty dumb)
- Started learning #guitar ( I can play simple barre chords now :)
- Helped organise bunch of events ( I am good at tnis...)
- #books , #indeweb , #fedi as usual.
- Had many shitty days ( 2025 was bad on many aspects )
- Got a #keitai :)
- Rebased two years worth of changes in an android.. (yes I am proud of this little thing ) #git
- Still learning to program ( _How can I one be so bad they didn't learn it in one year?_)
- started learning #Japanese ( I currently just know Hiragana, Katakana and some phrases) and made a Jabber/Xmpp community around that .The list will go on if I try to remember it again, but yeah, I won't do that. One of the things I want to do in 2026 is to meet new people and have many experience while learning and doing things. As that will be the year I will be out of college and need to take responsibility of things ( This is scary ).
The previous 2024 post was very short, because of the character limit....

Automatically finding other #prav users is a core feature of @prav but in the last update this functionality was broken. We missed this during testing of the update.
I just added 2000 rupees to the bounty - we will give the money raised to anyone who fixes the issues.
Would you consider increasing the bounty? Small amounts are ok too.

@prav @signalapp @Monal @daniel @sflcin @internetfreedom Looks like they have only considered proprietary apps and services. Even if #Prav or #Signal mandates Sim binding, it is easy to remove such a requirement with a fork. Also using prav account in another xmpp app like monocles chat can easily defeat Sim binding. Even further scammers can just use another xmpp account not using phone number as username to contact prav users. So what should be our response to this order ?

For #Quicksy and #Prav I'm not sure if we have to comply yet (since we are not explicitly identified as a TIUE in this order, but the definition is too broad) . Looking for support from @sflcin and @internetfreedom about our options #XMPP #FreeSoftware #OpenSource

@dnkrupinski @prav In the future, we might consider adding email verification or invitations as alternative options to SMS based verification in #Prav. But as I mentioned in my previous reply, people have a choice to use another compatible app that don't require a phone number. Just scan the QR code of the contact or add the contact manually instead of detecting them automatically based on phone number. For iPhone users they can use Monal to talk to Prav users, without phone number. #XMPP

@dnkrupinski @prav since Prav is part of the #XMPP network, people who don't want to provide a phone number can choose any XMPP app/service to talk to #Prav users. In that sense, phone number is optional. It makes a few things easier for people who are ok to use phone number like in other mainstream messengers. But unlike those other mainstream options like WhatsApp, Telegram or Signal, we don't lock people to Prav. For example, you can use Monocles Chat and talk to Prav users.

While we'd like everyone to use decentralised messaging standards like #XMPP, there are times when you just want to stay in touch with a friend or group on the #murky lands of the other side. Thankfully we have software like #Matterbridge and #Slidge to bridge your messages across to other platforms—although no guarantees about what happens to your message once it reaches there 🤖️

You know how we've always claimed "#WhatsApp could introduce features that you don't agree with"? Well, we've just got our latest demonstration. WhatsApp has started to introduce #ads to users—"contextual" ones, of course (guess what that means).

If Prāv turned evil, we'd have to start with a consensus process like this which would probably get blocked at the first step 🛑
(Not to mention the fact that you could always switch to some other #Jabber/#XMPP supporting app and seamlessly carry on communication as before!)

#Prav started working as a #cooperative since #PravConf (two weeks already). We were working on the bye-laws and looking for people willing to join as members for over 2 years already.
Now we have https://prav.app/coop/ which lists the Office bearers, Board of Directors and Members.
Board is elected by members for a two year term. So far we have #Dalits, #OBCs and #Christians in the board. Inviting #underrepresented to join as members and serve on the board.
