  1. I just ran out of disk space on my VPS.

Fortunately I left an unused 2GB `/swap` file that I was able to delete and get some breathing room for cleanup operation while the sever continues running.

My #Letsencrypt certificates auto-renewed (yay!) but did not propagate correctly to #Prosody (XMPP server), and #Slidge (Whatsapp-to-XMPP bridge) silently lost connection, meaning that I missed on roughly a week of family chat, only thinking "what a boring time of year".

I'll have to rethink this Rube Goldberg machine of message delivery.

  31. Message Fatigue is really a thing. If you have a thing that produces a bunch of messages and logs to say everything went well, and you're monitoring a bunch of it, you're eventually going to mentally filter it out as "normal" and it just becomes noise.

it's much easier for the "omg everything is on fire" message to be lost in the noise then.

Unix has the right of it, if everything went well, say nothing, exit stage left with value 0.

  43. Ah yes. Consistency and #Microsoft.
They want a UTF-8 file as config.
I generate one in Powershell and write the file using Out-File -Encoding UTF8 LayoutModification.json
Which generates a file with BOM, which the system refuses to read; without any error message found anywhere.
This problem took at least a full day to find... and lots of cursing :blobcatcry: :blobcatcry: :blobcatghost: #justAdminThings #Windows11

  48. Well yeah... Devs using containers like VMs for ...
2 months, 10 containers, 500 GB of disk space used...
Each having its log file around 45 GB in size, over 84 MILION lines...
And that's the only reason we have a dedicated server for that... Cannot virtualize it... Cuz they won't change their QA process...

  49. One of our employees had problems connecting to our network via on his We suspected his laptop, so we sent him new one, tested. Not working. Over 3 weeks the whole support team was trying to fix that. To disable inbuilt load balancer we lowered MTU from 1500 (the lowest MTU supported by load balancer) to 1400, then 1300. Didn't help. What helped?
    LOWERING MTU TO 1200...
    Why? No idea... Probably just

  50. Story time: I've had a few people recently message me regarding their strong suspicions that we had somebody impersonating (in their words catfishing) on aus.social.

While I couldn't find anything that proved one way or the other, I was able to directly contact the person via linked in of all places and confirm their identity.

This isn't a regular issue, but I hope it builds trust and safety on this platform. Thank you for people who raised concerns of the possible stolen identity, and thank you for the person for being understanding of our concerns.

Edit: that said, I think a few people got in contact with them directly, and spooked them away.... please just report these things and leave them to myself/mods instead of messaging people directly. It's the mods job.
