  2. I can honestly say I never expected "Hugo Nominated Fan Artist" on my list! I am beyond honored. +1 for cross stitch and fiber arts! #fiberarts #crossstitch #hugos #worldcon #seattleworldcon2025 #seattlein2025

  3. Have you ever wondered about or wanted to participate in how the rules that govern the Worldcon, the Hugo Awards, and other aspects of WSFS get made? We do this at the business meeting. However: have you ever been unable to attend a business meeting session because your favorite author or panel is happening at the same time during the convention? Have you ever been unable to attend the convention, but still wanted to participate in the business meeting?

Fear not! We are excited to announce that this year we have developed a new process for the business meeting: a series of pre-convention, virtual meetings! Seattle Worldcon 2025 will host the business meeting virtually on four different dates prior to the convention: July 4, July 13, July 19, and July 25. These dates were chosen in order to accommodate as best as possible religious observance, work commitments, and time zone differences. Viewing of the meeting will be open to all; however, to participate in the meeting and vote on business will require an attending membership or virtual attending membership in the convention. Our business meeting chair, Jesi Lipp, has experience with hosting virtual business meetings and is excited to bring that wealth of knowledge to WSFS and Seattle Worldcon 2025 in order to expand access and to enfranchise groups historically unable to participate.

To help prepare everyone for this new step forward, Seattle Worldcon 2025’s WSFS team has planned additional events. If you are intimidated by the thought of the business meeting or you’ve wanted to propose a change but are not sure how, you can learn the ropes at one or both of the informational town halls we have lined up. The business meeting chair and WSFS division also anticipate having at least one practice session prior to the virtual meeting using the virtual meeting platform.

Please note that voting for site selection for the 2027 Worldcon will include in-person voting at the convention, and that the announcement of the site selection winner will be done in person at Seattle Worldcon 2025.

Any questions – please reach out to [email protected].

Stay tuned for further details on this exciting new step into the future of the Business Meeting!

  4. Hello Seattle Worldcon Fan!

Announcing the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Film Festival!

Seattle Worldcon 2025 is proud to dedicate a room for all five days of the convention exclusively for showcasing speculative fiction films. This room will be the home of the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Film Festival.

If you’re a cinephile, a filmmaker, or just a lover of speculative fiction, make sure to spend some of your time at the Worldcon in the festival room. The festival promises to be an exhilarating celebration of creativity, diversity, and the magic of the silver screen.

The Seattle Worldcon 2025 Film Festival is not your run-of-the-mill film event. It’s a carefully curated showcase of independent films that fall under the umbrella of speculative fiction. Whether you’re into mind-bending science fiction, epic fantasy, or spine-tingling horror, this festival has something for everyone. And the best part? It’s a judged festival, so you’ll be treated to the cream of the crop—films that push boundaries, challenge conventions, and transport you to otherworldly realms.

    Calling All Filmmakers

Are you a filmmaker with a passion for speculative storytelling? This is your chance to shine! The submission window for the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Film Festival opens on September 1, 2024 and closes on March 31, 2025. We encourage filmmakers from all backgrounds to submit their works. And here’s the icing on the cake: if you’re a BIPOC or a woman director, the submission fee is waived. So, dust off that camera, polish your script, and get ready to share your vision with the world. For more information on submitting films, please see the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Film Festival webpage on FilmFreeway.

“Best of” Samplers From Other Film Festivals

But wait, there’s more! The festival isn’t just about showcasing submitted films. We’re also rolling out the red carpet for “best of” samplers from other fannish film festivals. If you run a festival—whether it’s on the West Coast or beyond—reach out to our festival director Shawn Marier ([email protected]). Let’s cross-pollinate creativity and promote the incredible work happening in the world of speculative cinema.

Seattle Worldcon Member Registration Portal Has Launched

After many months of software development, our registration portal is live! The portal provides a one-stop, self-service kiosk where you can:

    • Look up your membership information
    • Upgrade an existing membership
    • Purchase a new membership; and/or
    • Make a donation to Seattle Worldcon 2025 or the Seattle Worldcon 2025 Community Fund

Start from our memberships page which explains membership options and the Worldcon membership structure, or go directly to the portal. The portal gives you an option to log in through a Google account or receive a sign-in link through an email address. If you have a membership already, be sure to use the same Google account or email address which is associated with the membership. The first time you log in, you will be asked to enter or verify personal information, and you will need to click a box agreeing to abide by our code of conduct. You will also be given the opportunity to indicate special interests, such as volunteering, or participating in the program, dealers’ room, or art show.

Once this information is entered, you will be taken to a screen showing items available for purchase. If you do not have a membership, please remember that purchasing an attending or virtual membership is a two-part process; you must first choose “WSFS Membership (50.00)” to see the attending membership and virtual membership options. If you already have a membership, the options you will see will be upgrade and donation options. If you are unsure what the options mean, you can click “Home” to verify what membership level you currently have. A help page is available, and if you get stuck you can email registration for assistance.

We anticipate that regular attending membership rates will rise in October (date to be announced), so if you need to upgrade from a WSFS-only membership, this is a good time. While the regular rate will rise, the special Friend of Worldcon membership and reduced rate attending membership levels will remain the same.

Thank you to the ConTroll™ team for their work adapting their registration system to the needs of our Worldcon.

    Facilities Update!

Hotels: We expect reservations to open no later than October 15. Links will be posted for the Sheraton, the three Hyatt group properties, and the Mayflower. If you are interested in booking a suite at the Sheraton, see below.

Parties: The Sheraton is the headquarters hotel and the only property that will permit outside food and beverage service in hospitality rooms. If you intend to host an open party, you will want to be in the Sheraton. Closer to the convention, please contact our party support staff for additional information.

Suites: If you wish to obtain a suite for hospitality purposes at the Sheraton, or for personal use, we will have a separate application process. After reservations open, we will take requests and determine how to allocate the suites we have available at the Sheraton.

Staffing: The Facilities Division is hiring. Please see the volunteers page for information.

    Accessibility Needs?

Will you have any accessibility needs at Seattle Worldcon 2025? We want to help! Please let us know in the registration portal, by selecting the appropriate checkbox in the “Edit Interests” section. We will follow up to request/provide more information.

With our hotel blocks expected to open up in the near future, we will communicate to people who have checked this box about the process for early booking of accessible rooms. Do this ASAP so you don’t miss it! Accessibility assistance may also include help with mobility scooter rental, sign language interpretation, and other services as available.

    Come work with us!

Volunteer positions are currently available and many more will be opening up as the convention approaches. Let us know you are interested by filling out the volunteer form early! You can find it here on the website, and keep an eye on this page as more roles become available.

Seattle’s program will feature a lot of hands-on and interactive content. Want to be a panelist? Here’s the form: Panelists and Presenters. Have panel suggestions? Tell us: Panel Suggestions.

Announcing the Community Fund for Seattle Worldcon 2025!

We are also happy to announce that we have been generously seeded with $30,000 from DisCon III to start a Community Fund for Seattle 2025. Our fund will have four focus areas: Pacific Northwest community members attending for the first time, LGBTQIA+ community members, BIPOC/AANHPI community members, and Global South community members. Applications for funds will open shortly and will be found on our website. We are also still gratefully accepting donations to increase our capacity, which can be made through our registration portal.

    Come work with us!

Volunteer positions are currently available and many more will be opening up as the convention approaches. Let us know you are interested by filling out the volunteer form early! You can find it here on the website, and keep an eye on this page as more roles become available.

Creative people, it’s time to get started!

Seattle Worldcon 2025 is built from a community of readers, makers, and creators of all types. As such, we’ll have a great deal of hands-on programming and events – ways for you to participate, if you wish. Here are three opportunities to join in if you are interested in making things:

Group Costume Project: Want to be part of a group costume, but don’t have the connections to other costumers to make it happen? We’ve got you covered! We’ll announce a theme for the group costume after Worldcon in Glasgow. Just bring your own costume on the theme to Seattle, and be part of our group costume meetup. We’ll get a great group photo, and you’ll have a chance to connect with other costumers. Have a great idea for the theme? We want to know! Send suggestions to [email protected]. The theme should be broad enough for lots of interpretations, but specific enough to spark people’s creativity and create a fairly cohesive group. It should also be accessible to costumers of all skill levels. Let us know what you think!

Single Pattern Contest: Keep checking for the announcement of the Single Pattern Contest – we’ll choose a commercially available sewing pattern. You will make something cool using that pattern – let your creativity run wild! A team of judges will evaluate the entries. Winners will be announced publicly, and prizes will be given.

Props Contest: Show us your best atomic age, retro-futuristic prop! Whether it’s a ray gun, communicator, or other prop, we want to see what you can come up with to build yesterday’s future. A team of judges will evaluate the entries, and we’ll showcase them to the membership.  We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

    Thanks Glasgow!

The Glasgow Worldcon, Glasgow 2024: A Worldcon for Our Futures was stellar. We made new friends, stocked up on inspiration, and brought on a ton of new volunteers. We can’t wait to replay some of the panels and events we missed while having conversations and hosting parties. Thanks for the hospitality and another great Scottish Worldcon.

  6. Here’s my #introduction / #introductions post (updated 5/25/24):

Hi! I’m Michael, but can frequently be found online as “djwudi”.

Grew up in #Alaska, now exist just south of #Seattle most of the time.

Currently work in #HigherEducation #a11y #accessibility as the #AccessibleTechnology Program Manager at Highline College.

    I’m a #ScienceFiction / #SciFi fan. #StarTrek is my home fandom, and I volunteer for @norwescon, a local regional fan-run con, and for @SeattleWorldcon2025 #SeattleWorldcon2025.

I read a lot of SF #books. Trek novels are my go-to “comfort food”. I’m slowly working my way through all the #HugoAward Best Novel winners, and every year read all of the nominees for the #PhilipKDickAward before the annual award ceremony at Norwescon.

Speaking of the Philip K. Dick Award and #Norwescon, as of #nwc45 (2023), I am the award ceremony coordinator for Norwescon. This means I oversee the award ceremony and work with nominated authors and their agents as we invite them to attend the ceremony.

I’m one of the many Seattleites who “used to be a #DJ”. For me, it was about a decade in #Anchorage in the late ‘90s/early ‘00s, primarily at The Lost Abbey and Gig’s Music Theatre. Focused on alternative genres: goth/industrial/synth pop/ebm/techno/etc. These days I occasionally pop up on Twitch, and semi-regularly DJ the Thursday night dance at Norwescon.

Though recently more on the fringes, I try to be part of the #SeaGoth (Seattle #goth / #gothic) community whenever possible. I used to be a regular at The Vogue (on 12th), and these days try to get out to the Mercury once every month or two.

#Apple #macOS / #iOS user by choice, Windows user if paid.

Oh, and: 51, white, cis, male, statistically straight, healthy, white-collar employed, not rich but comfortably not poor, married, homeowner, neurotypical (as far as I know). In other words, living with a lot of #privilege that I try to be aware of and use for good.
