  1. 🚨 Attention Glasgow WSFS members! 🚨

Want to nominate for the upcoming awards? Make sure you checked the box to pass your information along! If you missed it, reach out to Glasgow 2024 registration ASAP to get it sorted. ✅ #WSFS #Glasgow2024 #SciFiAwards

  2. Anyone wants to help me nominate moringmark's #TheOwlHouse fanart for this year's #HugoAwards ?

Wildly different target audiences, I know, but I'd thought I'd throw it out there, especially since the #Glasgow2024 nominations seemed quite eclectic.

  3. Octothorpe 122 is here! We discuss letters of comment, hybrid conventions, awards and the recent news about Oghenochovwe Donald Ekpeki. Pumpkin carved by our very own Alison Scott. Listen here! octothorpe.podbean.com/e/122-t

  4. In this episode, we do rather fewer letters of comment than last episode, and then we let Liz do her favourite topic of all: STATISTICS. Listen here! octothorpe.podbean.com/e/120-a

  5. We respond to your burning questions in our bumper mailbag episode! We spend a good long time going through your posts, and we briefly discuss the recent allegations against Neil Gaiman before moving onto happier topics. Listen here. octothorpe.podbean.com/e/119-o

  6. Episode 118 is here! We round off most of our discussion of the Glasgow Worldcon, including talking about Halls 4 and 5, communications, Worldcon structures, and publications. Thanks to Sara Felix, this week, for providing our lovely artwork. Listen here! octothorpe.podbean.com/e/118-o

  7. Now working my way through the online-only panels from #Glasgow2024. I appreciate that the program(me) department did separate panels on some topics for both online and in-person, allowing more perspectives on a subject than could be accommodated in a single session of either modality. Hopefully the @seattlein2025 team will follow this example.

  8. As part of his follow-ups from the #Glasgow2024 #HugoAwards and #WSFS admin roles, @nwhyte wrote up a piece on the consultative vote taken on one of the constitutional amendments proposed at that Worldcon: fromtheheartofeurope.eu/the-20

Aside from the nod to me (thanks!) I really like the nuanced examination of when these might be a good idea and not.

  9. Finally getting around to watching the #Glasgow2024 videos. Unfortunately most of the talks I wanted to see were not in rooms that had recording.

  10. Octothorpe 117 is here! We discuss the recent Worldcon, Glasgow 2024, talking mostly about registration, attendance, and programme. Spoiler: we quite liked it, listeners. Listen here! octothorpe.podbean.com/e/117-y

  11. The process of “Getting NomNom to be suitable to make new Worldcons" has definitely unspooled into a lot of work:

    - choose a templating tool (copier)
    - implement a template (took most of the morning, based on the #Glasgow2024 site)
    - convert NomNom from a Django app into a library
    - move all the apps into the nomnom namespace --> a LOT of search/replace
    - add CI for it
    - realize that I need to package up the svcs integration
    - start a whole new project on GitHub
    - rathole on tests

  12. I went to Scotland for two weeks (and a #Glasgow2024 #Worldcon) and all I got was these whiskies and no COVID. #whisky #scotch

  13. Pretty sure i've not bought COVID home from #glasgow2024, but two friends I was gaming with on Sunday have succumbed so I continue shoving sticks up my nostrils for another few days...

All these negative tests though - should I appeal?

  14. Still watching replays of #worldcon panels and I can recommend the Linguistic futures series of talks. The 1. speaker summarized the many #sff and #fandom words that have found their way into the OED. The review takes years because they stay there forever, so check the waiting list first; you can suggest additions here:
    pages.oup.com/ol/cus/164617394
The 2. talk was about animal languages in sff and how their distinct perspectives might influence their language.
    #Glasgow2024 #linguistics

  15. OK, just over 7,000 words and I still haven't even written the actual Glasgow part of my #Glasgow2024 trip report. Going to be another few days, I guess.

  16. A few photos from this year’s #Worldcon#Glasgow2024. Just a few panels I attended, and some from Irish Video Game Orchestra concert. Also a video from Seanchas nan Gàidheal talk/concert.

    But if anyone’s interested, they’re here: photos.app.goo.gl/WPmVVsi2WCeA :)

I still have some photos from Hugo Awards ceremony to upload, but there are a lot more better ones online already.

  17. I've started drawing up a list of key Worldcon programme items I missed so that I can go back and watch the reply of them. I fear I will have to ruthlessly triage this list if I am not to be spending the rest of my life watching recordings of Glasgow Worldcon panels.

    #Worldcon #Worldcon2024 #Glasgow2024

  18. The live episode from Glasgow 2024 is here! We know you all expect the live episodes to be a bit less structured and organised than the recorded ones, but the three of us had had even less sleep than usual and so it's a bit more chaotic than usual… normal service will resume in 117!

  19. Finally looking at the Worldcon Discord with a view to picking up reading suggestions etc. for panels I was interested in and wishing all the panels had their own dedicated Discord space like with the Academic track, as opposed to the room-based splodge there seems to be for everything else.

    #Worldcon2024 #Worldcon #Glasgow2024

  20. Happily doing my dangerous edits now with the #Worldcon2024 Philharmonic playing in the background. 😁 #Glasgow2024 #ForOurFutures (hopefully music will soothe the savage manuscript and it won't cut me again)

  21. Other than COVID, the other other things we brought back from #Glasgow2024 were some paintings. We won bids on three paintings by @FredGambino , and one on a Mars landscape painting by Linda Marques. Someone gazumped us to her Neptune Station painting.

We need to get the Gambino ones re-framed to match the frame styles for our other Gambino/Foss pieces.

  22. I couldn't resist and got this little guy I drew for the Worldcon Souvenir Book printed as a sticker :blobfoxaww:

  23. Only started having symptoms yesterday I think #Glasgow2024

  24. I didn't take many pictures at Worldcon. Here's a scene from Dune! The Musical, the bar where the Worldcon pub crawl kicked off, my final collection of ribbons, and a pile of stuff I brought home with me from Glasgow.

Announcing the Community Fund for Seattle Worldcon 2025!

We are also happy to announce that we have been generously seeded with $30,000 from DisCon III to start a Community Fund for Seattle 2025. Our fund will have four focus areas: Pacific Northwest community members attending for the first time, LGBTQIA+ community members, BIPOC/AANHPI community members, and Global South community members. Applications for funds will open shortly and will be found on our website. We are also still gratefully accepting donations to increase our capacity, which can be made through our registration portal.

    Come work with us!

Volunteer positions are currently available and many more will be opening up as the convention approaches. Let us know you are interested by filling out the volunteer form early! You can find it here on the website, and keep an eye on this page as more roles become available.

Seattle’s program will feature a lot of hands-on and interactive content. Want to be a panelist? Here’s the form: Panelists and Presenters. Have panel suggestions? Tell us: Panel Suggestions.

Creative people, it’s time to get started!

Seattle Worldcon 2025 is built from a community of readers, makers, and creators of all types. As such, we’ll have a great deal of hands-on programming and events – ways for you to participate, if you wish. Here are three opportunities to join in if you are interested in making things:

Group Costume Project: Want to be part of a group costume, but don’t have the connections to other costumers to make it happen? We’ve got you covered! We’ll announce a theme for the group costume after Worldcon in Glasgow. Just bring your own costume on the theme to Seattle, and be part of our group costume meetup. We’ll get a great group photo, and you’ll have a chance to connect with other costumers. Have a great idea for the theme? We want to know! Send suggestions to [email protected]. The theme should be broad enough for lots of interpretations, but specific enough to spark people’s creativity and create a fairly cohesive group. It should also be accessible to costumers of all skill levels. Let us know what you think!

Single Pattern Contest: Keep checking for the announcement of the Single Pattern Contest – we’ll choose a commercially available sewing pattern. You will make something cool using that pattern – let your creativity run wild! A team of judges will evaluate the entries. Winners will be announced publicly, and prizes will be given.

Props Contest: Show us your best atomic age, retro-futuristic prop! Whether it’s a ray gun, communicator, or other prop, we want to see what you can come up with to build yesterday’s future. A team of judges will evaluate the entries, and we’ll showcase them to the membership.  We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

    Thanks Glasgow!

The Glasgow Worldcon, Glasgow 2024: A Worldcon for Our Futures was stellar. We made new friends, stocked up on inspiration, and brought on a ton of new volunteers. We can’t wait to replay some of the panels and events we missed while having conversations and hosting parties. Thanks for the hospitality and another great Scottish Worldcon.

  30. More shots from around #Glasgow2024 #glasgowworldcon - including the quest guy/NPC guy who was going around giving people side quests. Luckily I succeeded in mine!

  31. End of Worldcon! Bittersweet, because it was amazing but I’m looking forward very much to the coming week.

Looking forward to #Seattle2025 and #LA2026 – follow @seattlein2025 for the latter!

  32. This 1984 panel could really have done with a remote participant appearing on a big screen behind the in-person panelists.

  33. Think I might sneak out of Worldcon after this panel on 1984 to see what Monorail has to offer.

  34. @naomikritzer @clarkesworld And now that story has won a Hugo! Wonderful stuff. Might listen again this week. #Hugos #Glasgow2024

  35. Thanks to the Alasdair Gray panel this morning we knew to add Ubiquitous Chip to our tour of Glasgow's west end. And at Óran Mòr we got a peek at his auditorium mural (ask the staff nicely)!

  38. Stoked to finally see today's set-piece at 16:00 in the Armadillo Clyde Auditorium, "Nothing Nowhere Never Again", the reason why my house has been brim-full of partially constructed props and costumes for the last three months.

  39. Really enjoying this panel on Zardoz and not just because I wrote at least some of the programme description.

  40. So, my "From Kalasatama to the Suicide Tower" talk went well and our room was nicely packed. Two things became clear. First, there is more to say about how recent Finnish SF tries to approach tensions inherent to democracy. I'll get to writing on that soon. Second, introducing Finnish SF to anglophone audiences reveals demand for translations!

  44. The Glasgow Worldcon is fast approaching and that means I can promote my talk in its academic programming! Titled "From Kalasatama to the Suicide Tower: Futures of the Democratic Welfare State in Contemporary Finnish SF", you can catch my talk on Thursday, August 8, 16:00 BST in Dochart 2. Hooray and let's go Glasgow!

We spend our episode this week digging into the WSFS Business Meeting in unprecedented detail, but hopefully we make it more transparent and at least somewhat funny.
