More Hugo Analysis
Unlike yesterday, there will be some 2023 stuff in this post. None of it is new, but it illustrates a basic issue with stats. If we want to say whether something is unusual, we need lots of additional data for comparison. There are situations where we can work out how numbers should be distributed in a data set based on first principles, but often it is an empirical question that can only be resolved by looking at typical years.
I’ll start with the classic. The “cliff” phenomenon was identified by Heather Rose Jones very soon after the delayed release of the 2023 stats. It looks at the number of raw nominating votes each finalist got, organised in descending order by category. Here’s a version from the Google Sheet used for the Charting the Cliff report that uses the percentage of the total vote, but with 2026 added.
Adding 2026 doesn’t change anything, but it does help establish what the pattern should look like. However, that raises a different problem. 2023 is so starkly visible that if something were odd or weird about a subsequent set of Hugo data, then it would be hard to spot. It’s like 2023 is shouting really loudly, making it hard to hear what everybody else is saying.
Here’s the same graph with 2023 and 2026 recoloured to be more visible.
2026 has a shape consistent with other years, but the top-ranked nominee by category is less distinct from the lower-ranked ones i.e. the most popular nominees in 2026 are less far away from the rest of the pack. However, these are the categories we picked out to show the 2023 cliff issue! So that’s another 2023-focus bias. It’s too hard to show all the categories, but here are some where 2026 is a bit more peaky at the start.
Best Fanzine is interesting because we do have a (natural) very slight cliff-like effect in 2023. The top 3 fanzines all had raw votes quite close to each other, but proportionally bigger than the next 3. The top 3 had a range of 57-66, and the next 3 had a range of 33-36. Just natural variation.
Yesterday, I posted the EPH ratio chart with 2023 removed; for completeness, here is the same chart with it put back in.
Again, 2023 is so distinctly different it draws the eye away from the details of the other years.
I think of the next issue as Marshall’s issue, as it was something Marshall Ryan Maresca spotted when looking at the 2023 stats. We are shown how many raw votes in total there are for a category, and we also see the EPH points for that category for the last few rounds. The total of those points should be the total number of ballots still in play. This will be a bit less than the raw number because some unlucky souls will have ballots where all their choices have already been eliminated. In 2023, there were some weird results, in particular Best Fan Writer, which appeared to have gained votes. I genuinely think in this case, these were just typos in the published stats1. So the following graph uses the same approach as the 2023 version, but with 2023 removed this time.
The version with 2023 has some negative values, which really changes how the graph looks and (again) disguises the natural variation. The taller the column, the more attrition there has been in the earlier rounds of EPH. Not surprisingly, Short Story is consistently taller. We should expect that because every year Short Story has a proportionally high number of nominees.
I don’t have category totals for the number of nominees for all years, so the following chart is a sample of past years and a sample of categories. It shows the percentage of all nominees per category (i.e. the number of books, works, people etc nominated, including those that don’t appear on the longlist).
Novel draws lots of nominees, but short story often exceeds novel. Dramatic Presentation Short Form is a bit of a surprise, but I think that is misleading. Short Form often has multiple nominations for the same show but with different episodes (once upon a time, lots of Doctor Who and Game of Thrones; now lots of Murderbot and Andor).
I do have another set of graphs to look at, but it is even nerdier and more 2023-specific, so I’ll save that for tomorrow.
Shorter version of this post: 2023 is still weird, and we all know why, but that means when looking for interesting features in subsequent years, you have to remove 2023 from the graphs; otherwise, the most prominent feature will always be 2023.
- Not to dwell too much upon things but of all the weirdness in 2023 stats, some of it was clearly typos in the main document. We know there were all sorts of issues in that document, but based on what we do know, the simplest explanation for this specific discrepancy is simply that the wrong number was typed in some of the boxes. I don’t think this one is shenanigans because it doesn’t fit with any of the speculative/alleged shenanigans. ↩︎
