  1. Jim Nielsen: I Tried Vibing an RSS Reader and My Dreams Did Not Come True. “…vibe coding kinda left me with that feeling I get after indulging in social media, like ‘What just happened? Two hours have passed and what did I even spend my time doing? Just mindlessly chasing novelty?’ It’s fun and easy to mindlessly chasing your whims. But part of me thinks the next best step for this is to […]

  6. I really love @tg's #UX observations on #PhantomObligation and #RSSReaders (it's very similar to what I've been saying about "RSS zero" not being a healthy aim!).

Fortunately, my favourite #RSSReader @freshrss supports custom CSS. Here's how I reconfigure it to suppress most of the badges and unread counts:

  15. Thanks to Fijxu use of Anubis videos still can be watched on inv.nadeko.net. 🫡

I feel like because of the aggressive bot scraping that intensified not long ago will going to make it impossible to continue to use feed readers and the only way to interact with websites will going to be restricted to only be possible from web browsers.
Already opening up videos in mpv from my rss subscribed invidious feeds not working, it was my preferred way to watch videos. Just to clarify I'm aware that rss still works the only thing that doesn't is opening up video links directly with mpv or with any other video player that can do the same. And not only that but I fear at some point reading full articles inside an rss reader will not work forcing me to open article links in a web browser, even if some of feeds can fetch full articles minimizing the need to do so.

I'm not trying to minimize the impact of this scrapers that have on free and open source projects and on web admins who have to deal with this onslaught of bot activity, they are the ones who got it worst.

  16. To my followers who use #RSSReaders, what are your favorite #RSSFeeds? Can be about anything relating to #tech, #accessibility, #disability, #science, #news, #books, #SelfHosting, #programming, or just anything you think I might like. Looking for new feeds to subscribe to.

  17. I'm trying to make my #email #newsletters feed more manageable and started using #Inoreader to check issues in masse. I was able to export a #opnl list of all the WordPress blogs I'm following. But #Substack doesn't have such a feature. Can this be done through other newsletter carriers, such as #beehiiv, #buttondown, etc? I'm still a bit new to #rssreaders.

  19. For folks using #rss readers:

Do you prefer to read the full article in the reader or do you like to follow the link to the website to read it in its original format?

  20. Does anyone have any recommendations for #RSS/Atom readers that will sync between devices? I'm on Android and Linux. I don't mind self-hosting.

  21. What do people use nowadays as #RSSReaders? (Does the concept even still exist?)

It’s to keep track of relevant #ResearchPapers of interest as my main source used to be… Twitter and ResearchGate, which I’ll both be leaving before 2024

  22. The more and more I see weird and irrelevant stuff on my Google feed on my phone, the more and more I consider finally going ahead and setting up #RSS and making my own #RSSfeed. Sounds crazy considering how much of a zoomer I am, but I've heard it's actually pretty useful!

I already have my own Nextcloud instance setup on my NAS, thankfully - now I just need to figure out what I'd like to add on that feed... 👀

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for #RSSreaders on Android and Linux (preferably #GNOME centric), or some other sort of advice, feel free to mention!

  23. @cityroler Google! And it was a good move because:
    a) it forced us to look for alternatives,
    b) it forced us to leave googles walled garden,
    c) innovation!

Now we have a variety of different #rssreaders to choose from and that's imo an advantage.

  24. Can anyone recommend good #RSSReaders?

I would like to get in the habit of reading more #blogs but would rather not have my email full of newsletters that I'll forget to go back to read. I'd rather be able to keep everything collected in one spot I can then browse when I want.

I used to use #Feedly way back in the day. It seems like that's still the top option?

  25. @shipp I agree, although I guess because I have tended to focus on #RSSReaders that don't have that functionality, it isn't as important to me.

I was becoming a fan of #Nuzzel back before #Twitter purchased it, and was interested in what was then still the emerging #TwitterBlue service because I thought that integration could offer a really compelling #SocialNews service in Twitter.

#Inoreader has this sort of functionality built into it although it is local to the Inoreader network.

Perhaps one day (soon 🙏 ) we will see a RSS Reader with #ActivityPub support to facilitate this sort of conversational news?

  26. Having seen many comment that #rss isn’t dead, can anyone recommend a good #rssReader? Preferably for iOS, but bonus points for sync between web/windows/Linux support as well.

  27. Any recommendations for good #opensource #RSSreaders on #Linux? I used to use #Lifera, but I'd like to give something else a try... (checking into @gnome 's "Feeds" now, too)

  32. If you use Friendica to access the Fediverse, you can also use it as an RSS feed reader.

Just search for any RSS address within Friendica, and it will appear in search results as though it's a Fediverse user. You will then be able to follow it, and its contents will appear in your timeline just like a user's posts would.
