Beim Thema 'Abgeprallt oder zerschellt', also eher zerschellt und vieles am Kraterrand auch abgeprallt, kommt man als Geologe in Deutschland nicht am Nördlinger Ries vorbei, einem der besterhaltenen Meteoritenkrater der Welt mit 20km Durchmesser.

RIES (https://mrob.com/pub/ries/index.html) is an inverse symbolic calculator: a program that takes a number and tries to find a formula that it satisfies, at least approximately.

RIES is first of all a desktop program, but there is a web interface for it at https://thomasahle.com/ries where you can play with it and can find strange formulas for numerical constants that you do not understand. (After useing RIES, you may still not understand them...!)

The web interface does not support all of RIES' command line options, but RIES is also part of Debian and probably other Linux distributions.
