  1. SENEDD ELECTION: Reform UK Wales leader visits Llanelli as party targets Sir Gaerfyrddin seats with nine days to go

Reform UK Wales leader Dan Thomas has visited Llanelli as the party steps up its campaign in Carmarthenshire ahead of the Senedd election on May 7.

Thomas, joined by Wales Director David Thomas, spent the day with local candidates and members canvassing in Llanelli town centre, the market, St Elli Shopping Centre and on doorsteps across the area.

Gareth Beer, Reform UK’s lead candidate for Sir Gaerfyrddin and Carmarthenshire branch chairman, said the mood on the doorstep had been positive.

“There is great momentum in the county and people are pleased to speak to us and hear about our policies,” he said. “Many people see this election as an important one, and many who have been put off voting in the past are now considering Reform.”

“That’s good to hear — there is a clear shift in this area from the mainstream parties. We are relating to a diverse range of voters which other parties may be struggling to engage with.”

Dan Thomas said he was impressed by the local campaign operation. “The branch has outstanding, very relatable, hard working candidates who have been, for several weeks, campaigning tirelessly, getting out there to speak to as many residents as possible,” he said.

“I was particularly pleased to support the strong Llanelli campaign, where the team is working hard to connect with local people every day and to spread the word on what Reform will do for the people of Wales.”

Reform UK Wales’s key Senedd election pledges include cutting 1p off every band of Welsh income tax, scrapping the default 20mph speed limit in built-up areas, advancing the M4 relief road, and reforming business rates to reduce the burden on independent retailers and hospitality venues.

The party also highlighted the importance of revitalising high streets, noting that Llanelli town centre was quieter than expected during the Saturday visit.

The Sir Gaerfyrddin constituency is one of the most closely watched in Wales ahead of May 7. According to the More in Common MRP we reported last week, Reform UK are projected to win two seats in the constituency on 26% of the vote, behind Plaid Cymru on 37%.

However, the latest YouGov MRP paints a more dramatic picture — putting Reform on 31% and projecting them winning three seats in Sir Gaerfyrddin, level with Plaid, and giving Labour no seats in the constituency at all. If that projection holds, both Gareth Beer and Carmelo Colasanto would be elected for Reform in Carmarthenshire.

Across Wales as a whole, the race between Plaid Cymru and Reform UK remains on a knife-edge, with the two parties tied on 29% of the vote in the YouGov model and separated by just one projected seat nationally. Reform had no seats at all in the Senedd at the last election in 2021.

The Senedd election takes place on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

  2. REFORM UK: Former Senedd MS Caroline Jones resigns citing candidate parachuting and “wall of silence”

Jones, 70, who represented South Wales West as a regional MS from 2016 to 2021, announced her resignation on social media, saying she had formally submitted her departure more than 24 hours before making it public and had received no response from the party.

In a lengthy statement, Jones said local members who had worked hard in their communities had been passed over for candidacies, with individuals she described as having “little or no connection” to constituencies being placed into positions instead. She said this had caused “deep frustration and disappointment” among members, candidates and supporters who had invested time and resources in good faith.

More seriously, she alleged that some of those parachuted into constituencies had brought “further reputational damage” through conduct including allegations of racism and discrimination — claims she said had embarrassed those who had worked to represent their communities with integrity.

“This continued lack of engagement reflects the wall of silence that many of us have experienced when trying to seek clarity and accountability,” Jones wrote, adding that she had made repeated formal attempts to get answers and had consistently been ignored.

The resignation adds to a growing picture of turmoil inside Reform UK’s Welsh operation in the weeks before the May 2026 Senedd election. Swansea Bay News has reported extensively on the party’s difficulties across the region, including the collapse of its Bridgend candidate slate, a furious resignation in Swansea in which a candidate branded the party a “sewer”, and a Carmarthenshire candidate launch overshadowed by wider defections and internal turbulence.

Jones is not a new face to Welsh political turbulence. She was first elected on the UKIP ticket in 2016, briefly led the UKIP Senedd group in 2018, and subsequently left to sit as an independent before joining the Brexit Party — now Reform UK — in 2019. She later broke with the group again over its anti-devolution stance, forming the Independent Alliance for Reform group in the Senedd until her seat ended at the 2021 election. She rejoined Reform UK in 2023.

Her resignation echoes complaints that have surfaced repeatedly across Wales. Candidate selection disputes, allegations of racism and discrimination against Reform figures in the region, and the high-profile jailing of former Wales leader Nathan Gill for ten and a half years over a Russian bribery case have collectively damaged the party’s credibility ahead of what polls suggest could be a significant electoral moment.

Jones said her decision was “about integrity, and about standing up for what is right”, and that she remained committed to serving veterans and her community.

It is not yet clear whether she intends to stand as an independent candidate at the Senedd election or step back from frontline politics.

Jones represented the South Wales West region, which covers Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea — areas that have been among the most turbulent for the party’s Welsh operation.

The Senedd election takes place on 7 May 2026. Reform UK has not yet responded to the resignation.

  3. CARMARTHENSHIRE: Reform UK names full Senedd slate — but selection rows and defections cast shadow over campaign launch

Reform UK has unveiled its six candidates for Carmarthenshire’s Senedd constituency and announced a new deputy leader for its Welsh operation — but the campaign launch arrives against a backdrop of candidate resignations, selection rows and defections that have dogged the party in recent weeks.

The party has confirmed its full list for Sir Gaerfyrddin, one of the 16 new enlarged constituencies that will each return six members under Wales’s new proportional voting system at the May 7 Senedd election.

Leading the ticket is Gareth Beer, a Kidwelly town councillor and local businessman who has become one of Reform’s most recognisable figures in Carmarthenshire. As Swansea Bay News has reported, Beer came within 1,504 votes of defeating Labour’s Nia Griffith in the Llanelli Westminster seat at the July 2024 general election — Reform UK’s strongest performance anywhere in Wales at that contest.

Gareth Beer, Reform UK’s lead candidate in the Sir Gaerfyrddin constituency

Beer is not the only Kidwelly town councillor contesting the Sir Gaerfyrddin seat this May. As Swansea Bay News has reported, Carl Peters-Bond — who is currently serving a historic fourth successive term as Mayor of Kidwelly — is also standing in the constituency, but as an independent candidate. Peters-Bond has been an active voice on Carmarthenshire issues during the campaign, calling for action on fuel costs for rural families and pushing for progress on the long-stalled reopening of St Clears railway station.

Beer said the response on the doorstep had been “overwhelmingly positive.” He added: “People are tired of the same old promises and spin from career politicians — they want a genuine alternative and real change at Cardiff Bay.”

Joining him on the list is Carmelo Colasanto, a county and community councillor who first worked in Llanelli 27 years ago and has since returned to the town, bringing a background in business compliance and corporate governance. Sarah Edwards, a retired dental professional and smallholder, stands as a prominent campaigner against electricity pylon developments across the Welsh countryside. Christopher Brooke, a retired engineer originally from Wrexham now based in Carmarthenshire, and Alan Cole — a business consultant with a background in senior roles at LG Electronics, Sanyo and HomeServe — round out the business-oriented portion of the list.

The sixth candidate is Michelle Beer, Gareth’s wife. A marketing and PR professional, she made Carmarthenshire political history when she won the Lliedi ward by-election in Llanelli in May 2025, becoming the county’s first-ever Reform UK councillor after defeating Labour in one of its traditional strongholds. The win followed just months after the Llanelli result had established the family as central figures in the party’s Carmarthenshire operation. More recently, Reform consolidated that county council foothold when the party won the Llangennech by-election, securing a second seat on Carmarthenshire County Council.

Michelle Beer was also among those who campaigned against plans to house asylum seekers at the Stradey Park Hotel in Llanelli in 2023 — a proposal the Home Office ultimately abandoned following local opposition. The hotel’s subsequent closure has been one of the most significant ongoing stories in Carmarthenshire.

The Carmarthenshire candidate announcement coincided with news of a new appointment at the top of Reform’s Welsh operation. Dan Thomas, who was appointed Reform Wales leader by Nigel Farage in February, has named Helen Jenner as his deputy. Jenner — a Welsh speaker who tops the party’s list in the Bangor Conwy Môn constituency — was born in Neath and raised on Ynys Môn, and works as a teacher.

Helen Jenner has been named Reform Wales Deputy Leader

Thomas said the appointment reflected the importance of teamwork across the organisation. Jenner said Wales was “at a crossroads” and described Reform as “the only party offering ambitious, credible solutions to the problems the people of Wales face.”

The announcements come at a turbulent time for the party in Wales. Just days after Reform revealed its Swansea and Gower candidate list, one of those named sensationally quit, accusing the party of betrayal and claiming it had “sunk deep into the sewer.” Separately, a Reform Senedd hopeful in Pembrokeshire resigned from the party entirely, alleging the candidate selection process had been rigged. The party has also seen a flow of new arrivals — including Swansea councillor Francesca O’Brien, who recently joined Reform from the Conservatives ahead of the election.

Polling puts the Senedd race in a state of flux. The most recent survey tracked by Swansea Bay News showed Plaid Cymru storming ahead of its rivals — a significant shift from earlier polls that had Reform neck and neck with the nationalists. In Sir Gaerfyrddin specifically, Plaid is projected to dominate with four seats, leaving Reform competing for the remaining two alongside Labour.

The candidates highlighted NHS waiting times, education standards, the cost of living and opposition to net zero energy policies as their main campaign priorities.

  4. Swansea Reform UK candidate quits in furious ‘betrayal’ rant – ‘Party has sunk into the sewer!’

Patrick Benham-Crosswell, a long-standing member and former candidate who secured 17.5% of the vote in Swansea in the 2024 general election, announced his departure in a scathing Facebook post.

He declared: “In truth, Reform has left me.”

Benham-Crosswell, who was placed fifth on the new candidate list behind an “ex-Tory on the make and three novices,” launched a blistering attack on the party’s direction.

He accused Reform of “betraying its early members’ vision, labour and achievements” and becoming a party that takes its volunteers “for granted.”

His post highlighted a shift within Reform UK, stating: “The ‘professionalisation’ of the party has led it to take its members and candidates for granted. Communications that once began ‘Thank you’ now more often start ‘You are required to…’

“The party’s employees in Millbank forget that branch officers and candidates are unpaid volunteers.”

The former candidate, who was an active member since Reform’s inception and the Brexit Party before that, did not hold back on the candidate selection process.

He alleged: “Across Wales the candidate appointment does not reflect how people performed in the selection process; I know because I was there. In many constituencies those at the top of the list are not the best. Far too many are Tories – and the Reform vote will suffer.”

This isn’t the first time such claims have rocked Reform UK in Wales; a Senedd hopeful previously quit the party over allegations of a rigged selection process in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion.

Francesca O’Brien, who defected from the Conservatives last year, tops the list of candidates for Reform in Swansea and Gower.

Benham-Crosswell dismissed any suggestion of “petulance or sour grapes” over his low placing, insisting it confirmed his fears that “Reform is no longer open or honest.”

“Politics is a dirty game, but Reform has sunk deep into the sewer when it should have been a beacon of decency,” he wrote.

He concluded his explosive statement by saying: “Politics should be about openness, decency and serving the country, which it once was in Reform. Politics is (or should be) about people, not process. Principles, not opportunism. Passion, not career building.”

His explosive resignation raises the question: Is Reform UK starting to implode before the election has even taken place?

  5. SENEDD: Reform MS tears into First Minister over ‘disastrous’ £9bn 20mph policy

Speaking in the Senedd, regional MS Laura Anne Jones launched a fiery attack on the controversial policy, accusing the government of ignoring the clear views of the Welsh public.

Ms Jones challenged the economic impact of the 20mph limit, pointing to the Welsh Government’s own analysis that estimated the cost to the Welsh economy at around £9 billion.

“It needs to be asked: has this ill thought out policy already cost our country a lot of money? Yes,” she told the chamber.

“Will it cost an awful lot to reverse? Yes. But how much has it cost our Welsh economy? By the Government’s own calculations, this has cost £9 billion.

“So you cannot say it has been a good policy. It has been a disaster from start to finish.”

Ms Jones also highlighted the record-breaking public petition calling for the policy to be scrapped, which attracted nearly half a million signatures.

Despite the scale of the petition, the Welsh Government has previously argued that it is not representative of the majority view in Wales.

The Reform MS argued that improvements in vehicle safety were already driving down road casualties across the UK, independent of the new speed limit.

“Road casualties have gone down right across the United Kingdom because cars are getting safer. It is a known fact,” she said.

Recent figures have shown that while road crashes in Wales have risen slightly, they remain below pre-20mph levels.

Ms Jones stressed that the opposition was not against targeted 20mph zones in appropriate areas.

“No one across this Chamber disagrees that 20mph should be the case outside schools and hospitals and where it is appropriate. It is disingenuous to say anything else,” she said.

“But this default 20mph policy needs to be reversed.”

The intervention comes as local councils, including Neath Port Talbot, have begun reviewing and in some cases reverting 20mph zones back to 30mph.

In response, First Minister Eluned Morgan defended the policy, stating that it had saved lives and reduced casualties. She pointed to a 22% reduction in police-recorded collisions in Wales compared to a 4% drop in England over the same period, and noted that some insurance companies were now offering reduced premiums in Wales as a result.

She said: “There are children walking around Wales today who would not have been if it weren’t for this policy. We’ve not estimated the cost of reversing the 20 mph speed limit, but it’s clear that, if other parties had intentions to reverse this decision, it would incur significant costs not just financially, but in terms of lives lost and injuries caused.”

Reform Wales has pledged to scrap the default 20mph policy if elected in the upcoming Senedd election on May 7th.

  6. Nigel Farage appoints new Reform Wales leader as Labour says party is now ‘run by Tories’

Reform UK unveiled Thomas at a rally in Newport, where Farage said he had chosen a “battle‑hardened” figure with experience running large budgets and leading a major London borough. Thomas will now front the party’s push for seats in May’s Senedd election, appearing in TV debates and representing Reform in Wales.

The event also confirmed that former Conservative MS James Evans had joined Reform — a move widely expected after he was sacked by the Welsh Conservatives last month for holding talks with the party. Evans’ switch gives Reform two members in the Senedd, but the focus of the Newport rally was firmly on Thomas’s appointment.

Welsh roots, London career, and a return home

Thomas told supporters he was originally from Blackwood, with family roots in the Valleys stretching back generations. He said both his grandfather and great‑grandfather were miners, and that he left Wales as a young adult because opportunities were “few and far between”.

He spent nearly three decades in London, working in financial services and rising through the Conservative Party to become leader of Barnet Council from 2019 to 2022. He later served as opposition leader until May 2024.

Thomas twice stood as a Conservative parliamentary candidate in Islwyn, finishing second to Labour both times. He defected to Reform in June 2025 and moved back to Wales later that year, saying he wanted to raise his young sons closer to family and the countryside he grew up in.

Asked how connected he was to Welsh politics after so long away, Thomas said he had “kept abreast” of events and remained “very informed”.

‘A huge honour’ — Reform’s new Welsh leader speaks out

Dan Thomas, Leader of Reform Wales, said the party had built a “strong team” and would be fighting for communities who feel ignored by mainstream politics.

“It’s a huge honour to lead Reform here in Wales,” he said. “We’ve built a strong team and we’ll get stronger still between now and May and beyond.

“Every day we will be fighting for our forgotten communities and everyone the establishment has ignored for so long.

“This May, vote Reform to deliver the change Wales desperately needs.”

James Evans: a defection already in motion

Evans’ appearance with Reform followed weeks of speculation. He had been sacked by the Welsh Conservatives and stripped of the whip after admitting he had been “continuing to engage” with Reform representatives, despite previously giving assurances he had rejected an approach.

Farage publicly denied speaking to Evans personally, saying he had not talked to him “for a couple of years”. Evans had also previously ruled out defecting, writing that he would not “jump ship when things get tough”.

His move means Reform now has two Senedd members, following the earlier defection of Laura Anne Jones.

Labour: ‘Reform Wales is being run by Tories’

Welsh Labour issued a blistering response, accusing Reform of becoming a refuge for Conservative politicians trying to save their careers.

A Welsh Labour spokesperson said Farage’s claim that there were “no Tories left in Wales” was because “they’ve all jumped ship to Reform UK to save their own skins”.

They pointed to Thomas’s long London career as evidence that Reform’s Welsh operation was being directed from outside the country.

“And now we’ve got a man who was a London councillor until two months ago telling Wales what it needs,” the spokesperson said.

“Ultimately it doesn’t matter who is named as Reform’s leader in Wales. They will just be Nigel Farage’s puppet, doing his bidding from Westminster and silencing the voices of the people of Wales.

“You can’t trust their leader. You can’t trust their words. Reform UK’s leader in Wales is another former Tory. Reform Wales: led by Tories.”

A major shake‑up ahead of May’s Senedd election

Farage said he chose Thomas because he had “been in the front line” of running budgets and leading a large council, and because he represented someone who “went away and came back” to raise his family in Wales.

Reform is targeting seats across South Wales and the Valleys, with opinion polls suggesting the party could make significant gains. All 60 Senedd seats will be contested under a new voting system in May.
