As a member of the European Parliament, I recently spoke about the importance of diplomacy and dialogue to prevent conflict and promote peace. I emphasized that increased military spending and the proliferation of weapons does not lead to more security, but rather increases the risk of war.
I also highlighted the dangerous situation in Ukraine, where Russia's völkerrechtswidriger Angriff has led to a massive escalation of military spending and the training of soldiers. However, I warned that we must not forget that Russia is a nuclear power, and playing with fire by engaging in a proxy war can have catastrophic consequences.
Instead of fueling the conflict with more weapons and military training, I called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis. I believe that it is our responsibility as politicians to work towards a future where we can prevent wars, not just prepare for them.
Concrete proposals:
1. The EU should work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine through diplomatic channels and dialogue.
2. We must not forget that Russia is a nuclear power and that any escalation of the conflict can have catastrophic consequences.
3. Instead of increasing military spending, we should invest in sustainable development and peace-building initiatives.

When Russian military retreats from Ukrainian territory, then all of the anti-war proposals and claims targeting the US military, NATO and Ukraine in this article will make sense. But until then, the primary action item for any Democratic Socialist should be to organize protests outside of their nearest Russian Consulate/Embassy and demand the return to peace.
