  2. Good Internet Magazine

Good Internet is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit print and digital quarterly magazine for personal website owners and those interested in using the internet as a means of self-expression, art, and recreation. The name Good Internet comes from Katie Baker's The Day the Good Internet Died, hopefully proving that headline wrong.

  3. Blog: I imported my Instagram archive
Quite a bumpy road and it took way more time than I planned, but now I have my full Instagram archive on this blog. I do not care very much about my Facebook or Twitter history, but I’m really attached to these images, that take me back to earlier years. The content is mine now, […] …

  4. Welcome to 2025!

15 years ago today I began posting notes on my own #indieweb site first, and only later on #socialMedia: https://tantek.com/2010/001/t1/declaring-independence-building-it

    You can too.

I am once again encouraging you start the year with:
    1. Getting a personal domain name
    2. Posting on your own site first, then syndicating elsewhere: #POSSE

In 2025 there are even more neighborhoods with other people’s garages¹ to post into. Companies, servers, services, disappear all the time, taking all their posts and permalinks with them to graveyard 404².

This is your annual reminder to embrace #independent ownership of your online self, your creations, and their #longevity:
    * Own your domain -> own your online identity
    * Own your permalinks -> own your posts

    Want help? Just ask: https://chat.indieweb.org/

    #ownYourContent #ownYourData

Once again I am restarting a #100PostsOfIndieWeb #100Posts project for the year.

    This is post 1.

  5. I repeat for the folks in the back, why I'm putting my eggs in Obsidian (or projects with that mindset) even with the downside compared to Notion/Anytype/etc :

    “Why a file format?

    - Files enable longevity. Databases get turned off. Files live forever.
    - Files enable easy migration between tools, fighting vendor lock-in.”

  6. Adding to my TODO list: have a look at XSLT again. Seems obsolete? I'd say absolutely not. Especially for running your own website which is getting more and more a thing 💜 #ownYourContent

For example, look at the tetralogical feed. The XML atom feed is nicely transformed into a little site: tetralogical.com/feed.xml

Apart from this, I'd recommend that feed super much when you want to learn more about #a11y

  7. What would the users of both platforms do if Medium and Substack suddenly closed, or they did something super-shady with all of the user data and content that they both have? I wonder this most times I see either domain linked here now.

Not everyone is a web developer, I get that, but self-hosting doesn’t have to involve too much fucking around with code. Worth it to own your content for life, surely?

    Example with #SvelteKit:

  8. This whole resurgence of the #personalWebsite and #ownYourContent made me feel like I kind of missed the golden age of getting your content seen and read on quality alone instead of resorting to gaming the system with clickbait and excessive SEO while working less on what you want to and more on what fits the users on platforms. 😔

Did we kind of become dependent on algorithms and recommended pages to sift through all the heartless junk out there? 🤔

  9. Happy to be a guest on the Torque Social Hour tonight with fellow guest @davidbisset and host @docpop.

We're going to be talking about new tools and strategies to keep your WordPress site connected to the social networking sites. We'll talk about a tool that helps you archive your tweets on your own site, fediverse integration, and more.

    The show is starting now:

  11. In last two weeks I deleted my accounts from Clubhouse, Vero, Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Medium. I moved to Mastodon and Pixelfed. Also I created self hosted instance of writefreely (writefreely.social) and moved there all articles from Medium. #ownyourcontent

  12. People I trust on here are speaking out on the importance of owning your content.

Most say start building content on a platform you control (a personal blog). Then disperse the content from there to other platforms (Mastodon, etc.)

Anyone work at it from the OPPOSITE way? Have a worker process pulls in all social media posts into your own backup system?

Either way, the concept interests me! Share if you have a process that works well for you.

  17. @heapwolf

Hi there. I fully agree with your opinion to . While I think that the federated nature of the is still better than the siloes of that we have to endure today, it still has flaws. With P2P we can achieve more.

I made a (still very alpha) GitHub repo called ItIsMine. It is about how to get a better system for and that allows us to and prevent any vendor or platform lock in.

    Any input very welcome!

Have a good time and see you later. 🤝

  19. The drive to get off third party platform continues... turns out I wrote 120 odd posts on my first blog site... hosted on wordpress 🤦🏽...

  20. @harmag I guess there's one other even more radical form of doing and that is the distributed one. I got into checking this out while working on solutions to achieve my personal goal of . Distributed social networks like SSB (Secure Scuttlebutt) and others are really fascinating me but I still don't see or understand how they might reach the maturity of the . For me big silos are a no longer a valid option.

  21. @asous Hi Marcelo. Nice to meet you here. 🤝 I'm a beginner in Software Development and started with learning to earlier this year. I'm a fan of projects and currently underway to set up my first two projects as a maintainer. I have not much content out so far, but it will be for dev's and non dev's in the niche of supporting people to learn new skills, building in public and how to . I might also blog about and stuff.

  26. @jeroen94704 Hi Jeroen. I could not agree more. 🤝 I always was a friend and advocate of and the prevention of vendor and platform . Because of the recent turbulences after the takeover I started looking around for a better way to do . The has a huge potential to let us break out from the headlock of big and the advertising industry. If we manage to make it easier and convenient for mainstream users, they will follow in droves.

  27. @psyonara Hello Helmut. Thanks for this tip. I'm more than ever looking to escape from any vendor and platform lock-in and a fan of . I will sure check this out. Have a great day 🍀

  28. Sure. A solution to help with that let's me craft messages and posts for social media local and then push them to the corresponding platforms. Second is a solution to export, manage and share browser favorites to a centralized place in form of badges. Kind of a web jumpstation. Goal is to make it shareable with other. Prett bold for a newbie, but it will be so many can help if they like.

  29. @matthiasott Hi Matthias. Do you have any experience with ? I started setting up an project to learn and . First idea is to build something that helps with and combines various ActivityPub components and existing services. If you know people that could be interested in joining the boat please share or ask them to contact me. Would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. 🤛
